My son is working on his eagle scout project and we are writing donation request letters to some of the major companies in our area. I realize it's a long-shot that we will receive any kind of response, but even if we get one decent donation it will be worth the effort. Anyway, I dont' have a contact for several of the places. How does he open the letter?

To whom it may concern - seems a little distant to me

Dear sir or madam - sounds like an adult writing it, not a 16 year old kid.

I am stumped. Anyone have any ideas?

Definitely utilize Dear Sir or Madame.... while it sounds older... it is more professional....

but that's just my 2 cents.

I know when our kids right letters for donations through the school that is the greeting they utilize.

My brothers all used Dear Sir or Madame for letters to donors when they did theirs. I would also say that personal contacts are normally the best source of anything. I assume he knows what he needs so I would check with family friends and see if anyone has a connection to a way to get it. Sometimes a company that might not otherwise do something might if a friend of an employee adds a personal note on things.

Also when it is time for the ceremony may I highly reccomend making some of the marshmellow eagles. I made some with mom for Daniel's ceremony. I got the recipe from DIT who had pictures of the ones for her son's ceremony in a circle journal we were in together.

Can you give me more info on the marshmallow eagles? I'd love to see what they are.

We are working on personal contacts for a lot of the stuff, but the piece of play equipment we need is $5,000 and we are looking for some financial help for that one. We have had 2 successful fundraisers, but I'm running out of people to ask personally to support another one. Thought maybe donor(s) may help us out for the balance of that money. After all, who can say no to a play area for a homeless shelter?

Note to self : 2 more boys to get to eagle. Pick a smaller scale project :rotfl2:

I would start with Hello.

I work in a male dominate professional but it is a personal pet peeve of mine when I get correspondence with Dear Sir. JMHO

Don't go to Target!! They love to donate money but they will not give money for playground equipment. We (PTO) went to them and they said if it was anything but playground equipment we would have gotten the entire amount we were looking for $13,000.

I don't have the eag;es uploaded to a site that will allow me to share but I will try to get them on one when I get home tonight. I don't remember the directions exactly- you would have to check with DIT for that. But the basics are you dip a marshmellow in white chocolate and then cover it in coconut. You add on chocolate chips as eyes and some kind of candy as the beak- I forget and don't see what it is in the pictuires- I know that whatever we used we had to put in the hole before dipping it in chocolate. You place it onto a chocolate cookie (we may have used oreos but I don't remember). It loos very much like a little mini eagle and they are very cute.
