Comparing Walmart with WDW

Can anyone explain the logic of feeling safer at WDW when compared to Walmart?

I see so many people say it here and on FB groups. A trip to Walmart would be like 30-60 minutes. You don’t have to eat your meals there and you can even do curbside pickup. So how is WDW safer when you are with thousands of people, spending the whole day, and having to take off the mask to eat and drink?
It defies logic but maybe I am missing something

I'm not generally a Walmart shopper. I went once in late March, very early in the morning, and then I went back yesterday. Holy Cow!! It was packed, aisles were jammed with merchandise, people were forced to crowd together at various areas in the store because of crowd size and merchandise pallets just randomly being in the throughways. Once my DH and I got out of there my DH said: Of all the places I've been during this pandemic, this was the WORST for mask compliance. People had them on their chins, below their nose, teenager had one pulled down and was walking around with this tongue hanging out and "growling. Even the employees were being very careless with masks. We live in a high compliance area for masks so it was a little shocking to see all that. So, yeah, I think in a situation like what I witnessed yesterday, WDW is probably a LOT safer.

In Walmart they do not strictly enforce mask wearing. Yes, we are in there for under an hour but so many people using a mask as a chin strap - and others with their nose exposed - makes me nervous. Even employees - especially employees. At Disney World all employees wore their masks properly. There were CM's everywhere reminding people to wear their mask properly. I was far less concerned at WDW than when I walk into a Walmart.

Not logical? I guess so. But the overall adherence to safe protocols sure felt safer to me at WDW than at Walmart.

But wouldn’t you get it more likely by being stationary in one place. In Walmart, you are more likely to be around people but constantly moving. So if you are wearing your mask then the few seconds you walk pass someone wearing the mask under their nose wont be a huge risk.

Eating out, or waiting in long lines or riding rides where you can’t escape but are with people who are not responsible with a mask sounds a lot worse

The Walmart rides are terrible. I actually cut myself trying to get into that seat at the front of the cart. You'd think it was designed for children! :confused3

I actually ventured out to our nearby Walmart this week and felt like I was waiting in line for the TOT I waited so long!! :teeth:

They had one check out until I was almost to the checker and then 3 or 4 more opened up,

Probably depends on where you live. I've been to Walmart probably 6 or 7 times since March and never had to wait to get in, or wait in a long check out line, and didn't really notice any non-mask compliance. It's also easy to stay away from people. I guess if you live in more heavily populated areas it could be worse. My parents in MD had to wait in line just to get into the Costco in the spring time for example. I never had to do that anywhere here.

It's just an expression....when I shop the produce section and reaching for apples, etc., people are not waiting for me to move so they can in turn stand there picking the best apples. Same goes for items on shelves throughout the store. People just go about freely and move next to you/past you, etc. There are no lines on the floor and if they are there, no one is following the 6 foot social distancing. At least not the way they did back in March. All business should still be doing this. It does not matter where one lives, some are doing a better job than others.

They are enforcing the rules in Disney more so than the supermarket, Of course, one can still get COVID anywhere. I think they/we are just trying to point out that Disney is making an effort and doing a great job. I thought so. Is it perfect? No way! Nothing is.

And yes, you are right - A business might be a 20-30 minute stop while Disney is an all day event - but again, some feel Disney is doing a great job with their guests - hence the expression :)

I don't think I'd necessarily *be* safer at WDW than at Walmart, but I'd feel more comfortable. The mask compliance thing is not an issue at WDW, and it's cleaner. Walmart...at least the one closest to me...is visibly dirty most of the time. My cousin goes there a lot, so I'm going by what she says. I've been twice since the pandemic started. The first time it was so crowded and people were not wearing masks correctly or social distancing so I asked to be taken home after a few minutes. The second time the aisles were one way only but people were by and large ignoring that and nobody was enforcing it, nor was the correct wearing of masks enforced still. Gunk comes out of your nose too, people.

So yeah, I feel personally better at nice clean WDW. Maybe that's polishing a turd because I want to go and have a trip planned, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

When I say that I mean safety protocol are actually taken seriously at WDW, compared to the stores and other public places in my area. The last time I was at a store mask compliance was maybe 60% at best. There was even worse mask compliance at my local coffee shop when I picked up some coffee for coworkers last week. No wonder cases in my area are skyrocketing.
