(I'm posting this here because a lot of Disney fans don't go to Universal...but I think most Universal fans have been to Disney.)

I've always been afraid of Space Mountain, but I'd like to try it on our upcoming trip. I love The Mummy, and my DH says that Space Mountain is so much "easier" than The Mummy. How would you compare the 2 rides? Do you think I have nothing to worry about?

If your not afarid of the mummy you definitely won't be afraid on space mountain. Space Mountain is on a much smaller scale--the only thing I don't like about it is it has very jerky hard turns and when I get off sometimes my back is tweaked a bit.:sad2:

They are both pretty tame, as far as coasters go. If you enjoy the mummy, I think you'll like space mountain. Space Mountain does have a few small dips and is a bit "clunkier" but my 5 year old loves it.

I'd be interested to hear a comparison as well on a few factors:

Wildness? Roughness? I think Space at WDW is fairly rickety and rough, not too wild. How does the Mummy compare?

Now Scariness? I don't think there's anything scary about Space -- no "boo" moments, nothing to look at. I'm guessing Mummy has gross or scary things? Does anything jump out at you?

Thanks!

Space Mountain is basically just a roller coaster in the dark. It's still running off 1970's design, and the ride itself is a LOT rougher than Mummy. Mummy is half slow moving dark ride, half roller coaster.

Mummy starts out going through a "cursed" Egyptian tomb and your car interacts with various scenes, such as a audio animatronic mummy. The next room utilizes a wall projection and fire effects, with the mummy warriors popping up on the sides (cheesy looking). The next room has scarabs and beatles along the walls, and this is when your car moves backwards down a small hill. The backwards portion is literally only 5 to 6 seconds long. The car then turns around on a turn table and launches upwards into the coaster portion.

The ride is fairly smooth. It's really not too bad.

Space Mountain is DD7's favorite ride at WDW. Mummy was the ONLY ride at UO that made her cry (and she rode Forbidden Journey!). Both rides are jerky and dark, but Mummy also has loud scary elements which Space does not. Take out the noise and the Egyptian stuff and just make the track continuous and not stop and go: and you have Space Mountain. (It's kind of like BTMRR in the dark.)

I think the Mummy is more intense than Space Mountain. Space is just a really rought coaster in the dark.

I actually find Space Mountain spookier than the Mummy but ONLY because SM is pitch dark most of the time. I like to occasionally see where I'm going. Otherwise it's definitely a milder ride.

I have not ridden either one, but my dd has ridden both. She loved the Mummy, but really disliked Space Mountain.

agree with all previous posts
If you can handle Mummy you can handle space

Space is an old school coaster...bumpy, not super fast but feels fast, small dips and lots of turns, the darkness adds to the fun, sit in the back for a more intense version (more bumpy etc.), put your hands up too!

Mummy is fabulous!!!

I love the interactive effects, those beetles always freak me out ;)

Top speed on Mummy is 45MPH. On Space Mountain: 28MPH.

45, is that all?

the 2 are not comparable at all in my opinion

The Mummy is more like Rock n rolla coatser at the studios (fast, banked turns, loud music and effects)

If youre fine on the Mummy, space mountain should be no sweat

The launch on Mummy is what gets me. It has a G-force, which doesn't work well for me. Once that is over the short coaster part is a lot like SM to me. I love SM more though, because there is no launch and the ride part is longer.

Think of Space Mountain as a longer "Googy Barnstomer" in the dark. There is nothing really crazy--just darkness and an old timey feel to the coaster.

Space Mountain isn't really scary but it is really fun. I think it is because it is in near pitch black so you can't really see where you are going, whereas you can see in the Mummy.

I was so excited to go on the Mummy and it wasn't what I expected at all. I didn't really think it was scary or like it that much. I thought it would be more like Spiderman all the way through (kinda). But it was like...random scary things, then all of a sudden you're on a mini-coaster and then the end. It was weird. The queue was actually scarier than the ride.

I think they are similar, and if you can handle one you can handle the other, but I prefer Space Mountain. I need to go on The Mummy again without the expectations to see if I like it. I remember the first time I went on Space Mountain I was just cracking up so much because it was fun.

I feel that the Mummy is faster and has a bigger drop than SM.

As someone who was super scared of coasters my entire youth, I went on Space which was my first ever coaster when I was 16ish.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and it helped me overcome some of my fears. I believe the darkness helps a lot if you are one who does not like heights like myself.

Now 20 years later at 36, I go on most rides and try to overcome my fears. I had to really suck it up to do Doctor Doom the first time 2 years ago.

My point is is that Space Mountain is very tame and should not be feared.
It's just a dark Thunder Mountain if you've ridden it.

Now I can't compare it to Mummy because I've never ridden it. When we went to Uni 2 years ago(our only visit until this coming Thanksgiving) we saved the Mummy to the end of the day. We got in line....got in the car...front row seats....and never moved. They asked us to exit the cars...and we sat and waited...and waited...30 minutes....then finally shut it down and told everyone sorry and come back another day. We were only visiting that one day :(. Talk about bad luck.

But if you are still nervous/scared about Space Mountain, go on it first thing in the morning. The track hasn't warmed up and we find it runs MUCH slower than if you go on it later in the day...although it's still not that fast.

If it helps, the coaster portion of Mummy is very short. It's over before you know it.

If you love mummy then space mountain won't be scary at all, however is is a bit rougher.

This post really describes each ride very well. :thumbsup2
