Well, here's the first entry to my journal. My first outward committment to a healthy lifestyle (other than to DH)...DH and I have been slacking since I'd say late July. The worst part about it is that DBIL owns a Gold's Gym in a Town nearby!....I'll warn you now that my posts will be long, as this is going to be my complete Atkins and Curves journal all in one place. If you prefer short sweet stories, this wont be it. The ups and the downs will be posted here, for accountability mainly.

Okay- Reality set it on Christmas Eve. My mom bought me a new pair of Guess Jeans...size 28. Ummmm..What the heck was she thinking...then it dawned on me, the last pair of jeans she bought me was in July..yup, the ol waist was a 28 then....maybe I haven't gained as much weight as I thought, if she didnt notice...I came home, tried them on, yeah, they button...after laying on the bed, readjusting the pockets 5 times etc.. okay- into the closet. I looked and saw that the jeans I've been wearing are 30's...okay, they're tighter than they should be......noticed today that my diamond is a bit tighter than normal...hmmm water weight...TOM?

DH is able to go to Golds daily, as it is on his way to his store, however for me, it's 1/2 hour each way. Luckily for me, a new Curves is opening here in town in early January. DH has goals to get back to Golds, though he mainly does weight training. He does do about 1/2 hour of cardio, but mainly weights. He is able to go with his DB, and another DB is normally there since it's his gym. I plan to go to Curves in the AM after DD's get on the bus. I have to make the committment to go every day m-f, as if I don't go, I'll skip the next day... it's just me. I also plan to get back on my treadmill. It's collecting dust downstairs, but I'll get it out.

We purchased Atkins New Diet Revolution today, along with the carb counter. Now let me confess, DH is Italian....Pasta, Bread etc.. are big items in our house. This isn't going to be easy for either one of us, however starting after the holiday's is going to be easier than had it been 3 weeks ago. Luckily, DD's are meat eaters, and both eat salads. They will still have their pasta, and bread, and I'm positive after the initial induction period DH and I will be okay preparing and serving these foods.

Our start date will be January 1st. My cousin just got back from Cali, and is only home till January 2nd...then he's off to Iraq, so we're all going out new years eve to a chinese rest. DH and I decided that one day later isn't going to hurt anything...so January 1st is the day to begin.

I am currently planning our first week of meals, DH will be packing his snacks and lunch with him, something he doesnt do now, he just orders out, or runs to a convienience store for snacks...not good we know!....I will be making DH and I eggs for breakfast, as neither of us normally eats that meal. I know that it's very important to eat, and that you can't lose weight if you dont eat enough so this might be our set back. DH and I don't consume very many calories...we'll have to increase the caloric intake... When I am out getting groceries on Wednesday, I'm going to also stop and pick up a bathroom scale... We've NEVER owned one! The only time I get weighed is at the Doctors....I have always believed that a scale doesnt tell you enough. DH will have his BMI, etc. calculated at Golds once again, and I'm hoping that Curves also does this. I've never been in one..heard and read a lot about them, gonna give it a try, as I'm sure they're going to be offering some great deal once they open.

When I'm getting a scale, I'll grab a tape measure too, I'm not too sure the ones in the garage would be accurate bending around my belly!....I'll post the starting weights and measurements and then maybe once I see them, I'll know where the goal is....I know DH would like to drop about 20 lbs, and get back into 36's, he's in 38's now. I would love to get into those 28's I just got for christmas, and I'm pretty sure my weight has stayed right around 145-150...I'm 5'7.

Im hoping to update this nightly, with what we ate, and what worked and what did not, not only for myself, but maybe for others who might have questions about atkins. I've done enough research of the program, and feel it's safe for us to do.

Can't wait to add some clippies...I'm going to be striving for the non-cheat one!!

Brandy

Here I sit, with atkins.com and the carb counter, and the big book....trying to plan out our first week of menu's. I've read quite a few of the wish journals, and boy are there a bunch of dedicated people here...I sure hope i have 1/2 as much will power as these people....one thing I did find though was that lack of planning causes indulgence. I do not want to end up in a situation where DH or I grab what we can just because we did not plan ahead. The atkins.com site allows you to save recipes, and adds them to a shopping list if you chose, which is cool...I'm done with the dinners for the first few days, but those are the easy part, I've gotta get DH and I our lunch and snacks worked out.

In the process of clearing out the kitchen of "crap" we dont need. YOu know, those 4 dozen holiday cookies, the fudge, loafs of italian bread...yeah, that stuff. I've made up a big bag of stuff to send to my mom...that'll get it out of here!..

Okay so onward to the menu's. Here I'll post my plan..then nightly the accountability will be there, since I've planned ahead, I better not stray.

There, that's not to shabby looking...now to get the list ready for the big shopping trip. One of the hardest for me is going to be drinking all that water....DH drinks water already, however I normally only do during the summer, or while exercising...Luckily we've got a water cooler here with those big 5 gallon jugs on top..no excuse for me not to drink it.

Okay...Time to check the kitchen, and see what I have and dont have compared to what I need.

hi brandy!!!!!!!........i just read all that you have posted and all i can say is wow!!!!!!!........you are seriously planning for change.......you are so really getting into this, that is wonderful. having your hubby to do this with is so good too. my hubby is doing this with me too.....altho he isnt as strict about it as me.

regarding water.......you have to really plan for this too.......if you really wanna make a dent in getting enough water in. i aim for 6l daily, altho i dont always get there. i take my water every where and reward myself in a small way when i get each liter in......such a glass of tea, diet soda after i get a liter or 2 in. maybe plan to drink a liter between each meal?

happy to have you here and look forward to hearing about when you get in those 28's..........

Thanks! I've decided that I need to be totally informed, before I take the plunge, well, and the new years eve party!...

We went grocery shopping tonight, and DH was so funny, we're walking down an aisle, and he goes to grab something, and DD6 says "dad you cant have that it has sugar"...he says "Listen kid, I haven't started yet"...this went on through the ENTIRE store...DD7 told him "Mom said get decalf coffee"....when they got to the coffee aisle. Oh it was funny...

I've decided to start now making small changes prior to the big ones on Thursday. I've purchased Splenda, and decalf coffee, we will begin using that tomorrow. Soda is out of the house...I did get some of that flavored water at walmart, no sugar and no carbs.. so my making a few changes now I'm hoping that the big shock to the system thursday - saturday wont be so bad..

Brandy

Brandy, I admire you! You are truly ready to make the changes and you're planning out menus - awesome!!

When you start at Curves, they will weigh you and take your measurements. They do this every month while you're there so that you can see your progress. I haven't used Curves but lots of people on the WISH board and local friends really like them!

Keep up the great work, the planning and those small changes!

Hi Brandy! Welcome to journaling. You sound a lot like me. I detail my journals and it didn't dawn on me to put a warning label on them with all the detail I usually put on them. Before me and DH started SBD on December 1, I had done all the research and make grocery lists and menus just like you. I was not going to get caught "out there" without food for the first few weeks and just wing it. Even though Atkins and SB are a bit different, basically we both will be watching those carbs and sugar so I'll be looking at your journal for updates to see how you and your DH are doing.

This is such an exciting time for you! I was so pumped when we first started (and still am) and with all the yummy foods and recipes out there, I really do plan to make this a way of life. If you are looking for other recipes, check out lowcarbfriends. They have tons and tons of recipes for when you come off Induction. I know it won't be easy getting rid of those nasty carbs from your body, but if you can make it through Induction, it should be pretty smooth sailing. I'll be checking back with you after the 1st. Take care!

OKay- here we go...pre induction, day 1..Monday December 29th.

I am not starting atkins until Thursday, however knowing how my body is overrun by carbs, sugar and caffine, I figured I better slowly get myself ready. Saturday I swore off Soda...3 days, okay still.

This morning started as no other, kids are still home from vacation, so watching them eat "normal" food all day was a bit rough. I had my coffee, decalf, with 1/2 & 1/2 and splenda this morning...now my cup is probably larger than most, so we'll say I had 4 cups. :p No breakfast, as I had to go into the office today as time cards are due.

Stopped at the gas station after, got a bottle of water, 20 oz...had DD7 with me, as we had to go to a few exchanges from christmas. Off we go.

Get back home just around lunch time, DD7's hungry..I tell her to make a sandwich, and have some celery. I make myself 2 eggs, and 2 slices of bacon, no bread. No bad...Onto the 2nd 20 oz water..I'm on my way!....

About 2:00 carb attacks start.....I cave, easily into 1 holiday cookie. that was enough to get myself over the edge. Now remember I'm not on induction so this was not a cheat. I figured if I could go from having 4-5 holiday cookies a week ago, to only needing 1 today, I'm doing pretty good and should be ready for induction.

Filled up my bottle about 20 minutes ago, it's already half gone, which makes 50oz of water for the day so far. I just called DH to have him pick up milk on his way home, since I forgot. This is not a good time of the day for me to go to a grocery store...cravings kick in, I'm normally tired, iritable etc...

Dinner for tonight is left over chicken from last nights roaster. The DD's will have mashed potato's, also left over, and DH and I will have a sald with it. I will also have 1/2 a bell pepper, not included in the salad total...LOVE them raw...I hope he remembers not to pick up soda!

Late tonight I'll have to check in, because usually about 830 I start getting hungry again. I may try the cheese trick I've read so much about here. Before I go to bed, I'm going to grill up some chickens for our lunches tomorrow.....I know that by going slowly into this it shouldnt overwhelm me. Though Thursday is the official start, and the point where we dont look back.

I'll be back about 8pm to vent on the cravings that I know are going to be coming. I did find out that my favorite gum has 2carbs per 2 pieces....so that's going to be a tough cut back...I can go through a pack pretty quick. Gotta get out the carb counter, and see where I can cut back a bit to allow for the gum throughout the day, it keeps me from eating when I'm not hungry.

Brandy

Lisa- I've read your journal!! Way to go! I sure hope that prior planning prevents us from cheating!....My DD's have been funny, saying "no soda dad" etc.... hard to cheat when you've got to little ones watching you!....DD's have health classes in school, so they've been on a healthy food kick for awhile...of course, it only applies to us, they tell us candy's not good for you, but then they eat the M&M's!....

Good job Lisa, keep it up! And thanks for the kind words

Brandy

Brandy,

I just wanted to say welcome. The WISH board is a great place to come when those cravings hit. I'm glad to see you started aa journal. It really helps keep you honest. I looked at your menus. They look great. You are so smart to plan ahead of time. Great job on the water consumption. Easing into low carbs is going to really help with induction. A couple of suggestions, that have helped me get started. If you like soda, there is Diet Rite. It is made with splenda, so no carbs. I limit myself to 1 a day. To treat myself I've tried the Divinci syrups in my AM coffee. String cheese is a great portable snack item. I wasn't a fan of the shakes, but lots of people like them. I prefer the bars. I'll try to keep up with your journal. You've made a fantastic start.

Hi, Brandy!:D Welcome to the WISH journal board! You sound like you're pumped, informed, and ready to go. Congratulations on making great strides in setting the stage for major lifestyle changes. You're going to find tons of support here--just what you're going to need to make a healthy living makeover!

Brandy, you can do this! :Pinkbounc

Good luck and keep us posted!
Erin

brandy .....sounds like you're doing just fine today, even with that one cookie! i'll give you a goldstar so far for sticking with your goals for the next few days...nice job!

:wave2: Brandy!

It sounds like you are off like a shot! It is so smart to bring yourself down from the carbs gradually. DH and I went on a feeding frenzy the week before. We spent our anniversary at DVC in Hilton Head and we ate and ate and ate. But we were commited to December 1 and we haven't looked back. I know you will find so much support here on your journey.

Thanks for reading my journal. It is so nice to have a record of your journey and be accuontable to other people when you put your menu "out there" for others to read it. Makes you think twice before you go overboard.

Congratulations on getting started before the new year! I'll be checking up on you later! Take care.

Last night wasnt that bad! DH decided we needed to make our weekly trip to Home Depot...of course, that was about supper time...I'm thinking all the way there, where we're going to eat. We decide on Applebee's. I have the chicken ceaser salad, small salad, with large size chicken. (thats 1 whole breast)...hold the croutons, and hold the dressing, I wasnt sure what was in the dressing, and didnt have my carb counter, thought I'd try it now before I HAVE to eat it that way..LOL

Came home, and actually was asleep at 830, no cravings for me!...

the day went well overall, however I wasnt in a normal routine, the DDs are out of school for another week, so thats when it will go back to normal.

Brandy

Okay onward and here we are.

Day 2 begins with no breakfast, just my coffee- as normal...will get better I promise.

Lunch was late- about 100, had an antipasta salad while Dh and DD's ate pizza. I pulled the cheese toppng off one slice, and drank water.

About 330pm, I cooked 1 fried egg, and 2 slices bacon...held me off until now, about 530. this is normalsupper time here, and I'm startin to get hungry. Asked DH to go get chinese, even though we're having it tomorrow night too at the big party. Well, DH agreed, so after I consume my boneless ribs, house fried rice, and eggroll- well I'll be in carb heaven. Now remember, I'm only pre-induction..I'm not cheating. This will be the first taste of carbs/sugar since sunday basically...given that 1 holiday cookie though. I have not craved soda yet! DH and DD's had it last night and for lunch today, and I was happy with my water!

For water today we're already up to 60 oz, 3 of my bottles. I'm hopeful that this water intake will help my dry skin on my legs...geez there dry. I've noticed that I'm not so full of energy....weird feeling for me. last night I was asleep at 830, woke up about 630, and today I took a nap already about 4-5....DH thinks theres something wrong!....I say its the lack of sugar/carbs my bodys not use to this! I hope that after Induction on Thursdays, that by Sunday my body will be okay or I'm gonna be really tired Monday. The DD's start their ski program with the school at Okemo...guess whose one of the instructors!!...YEAH...

Gotta go set the table for dinner....thanks everyone for their encouragement!! See ya all tomorrow

Brandy

Well, I made it through dinner!...the boneless ribs weren't really that sweet!...normally, the sauce is running off them, not tonight, I was a bit disapointe!...I had 4 spoonfulls of rice, not serving spoon, dinner spoon. Did not eat the eggroll, and had the fortune cookie after. I'm not even sure how many carbs I ate tonight, but I really dont think it was that many....

As I sit here reading other journals, I finish up the 4th of my 20oz Dansani bottle of water..that makes 80 oz's for the day, and it's only 720pm. DH said earlier, that we better call the water man, and be put on weekly delivery instead of every other!....Something about tap water turns my belly..even though I KNOW that our village has the best water in the state etc... (yes it's proven, I work for the town...)...still, no thanks, I'll pay VT Pure Springs to drop off the 5 gallon jugs!...

Well, I gotta go do up the dishes, I find if I clean up the kitchen soon after dinner, wipe everything down, and put everything away, your less likely to snack...especially if it's out of your sight!...

DH doesnt like that much!

Brandy

Brandy, You are doing great. Don't worry too much about the loss of energy. 4-6 days into it you'll feel fine again. In fact I feel much better without those nasty dips in my blood sugar. Keep up the good work.
Beth

Well, so far today so good. day 3 preinduction!...

Had Bacon Eggs Coffee for breakfast, and a salad for lunch...Also had 4 pieces of gum ....going to probably whip up another batch of eggs and bacon for a snack, as we dont go out tonight until 8pm.

at 8pm, we will be at my cousins welcome home/going away party...he's just back from cali on a weeks leave, and then heading to Iraq (he's a Marine)...I think I'm going to have Won Ton soup, Beef/Brocolli, and maybe some rice...not srue though...

That's it for today, gotta get DD's and DH into the shower, then dressed to go...

See ya tomorrow, the FIRST DAY OF INDUCTION!!!!!!!!!!!

Brandy

Brandy, you have handled your pre-induction so well, I know the real thing will be a piece of cake. Keep up all the good work!

Good luck today, Brandy, as you step out into induction. As they say: today is the first day of the rest of your life! Best wishes!:Pinkbounc

Great job on preinduction. I'll be cheering for you as you do the real thing.
