Commitment, Atkins, Curves & More

Okay, it's now 7:10pm and I feel as though I've made it through the first day of induction...I passed up a lot of temptations today...things went well, I felt full, I ate when I was "suppose to" you know, at breakfast!...LOL...anyway, here's how the day went.

DH and I weighed in and took our measurements this morning..boy what an eyeopener that was! We aren't sure if we took the measurements at the right places, but we figured we'd do it the way we did...I don't have "hips" so measuring them was rough...anyway...here's what we ended up as

To say the least, my waist was a weird measurement. this is probably where we measured wrong..I wear 30's, so I'm not sure where this 6" came from..my pants certainly dont feel like they are squeezing 6" of fat into them...but anyway.. Our next weigh/measure day is next Thursday. The scale has been put in the hall closet, not to come out again until then. By the way, this is the first scale that we have EVER had in our house!...weird, but I got a cool digital one...splurge I guess..

OKay the menu's for today included way to much food! I'm still full and we ate supper about 530...weird feeling.

We ate meals together today, since DH was home due to the holiday. From here on out, we will eat Breakfast and Dinner together, and I'll make DH's lunch before he leaves in the AM.

B: 2 eggs, 2 slices bacon, each of us had 2 cups coffe, w/ 1/2 1/2 and NO splenda!....
L: Medium Salad, I had Turkey Slices and Cheese, Dh had Roast Beef.
S: Cheeseburger, no bun
D: Steak, Salad
I had 4 pieces of my gum- thats 2 carbs total.

I am at 80oz water right now, DH is at 96oz. (his bottles bigger!)...

I have not had a craving yet, DH says he has not either. We figure the cravings might hit about 930, and if they do, well then we'll go to bed....I still have 1/2 my salad from dinner that I couldnt finish, so I may grab that in a bit to complete my carb intake for the day.

We had to go to the mall today to make some returns, and pick up a George Forman Grill, THIS THING IS AWESOME! If any of you that are eating LC dont have this, boy you gotta get it. I cooked the burgers on it, 10 minutes, then the steak, I eat my steak well, and it took 12 minutes, no flippin..it was one of the juicest steaks I've had in a long time, no desire for A-1 sauce.

Anyways at the mall, we ALWAYS get those fresh rolled pretzels, you know the ones...loaded with salt..yeah, those...well, DD's know we always get them, so as we walk by, they ask "can we at least get them, even if you can't"...sure you can I reply, and get them their pretzels...no tasting for DH and I...proud of myself!..

Well it's now 830 (got sidetracked!), and DH is getting a snack of cheese...and I'm going to finish my salad.

We've both also consumed another 20 and 24oz of water respectivly.

You did so well on your first day. Good for you and your DH!

I absolutely have no problem with getting carby stuff for other people or watching them eat it. I was at McDonald's yesterday with my sister and two darling nieces and their chicken nuggets, fries, etc. didn't bother me in the least. I think that's one of the best benies of lc eating, you just don't crave the junk anymore!

I love our George Foreman grill! I told my DH we will probably short ours out soon because we have used it just about every day since December 1 and sometimes twice a day. I'm going to be making me a grilled sirloin on it for my lunch tomorrow in a few minutes. You are right that the meat comes out nice and juicy. I haven't tried a steak on it yet but I will.

First day down successful and I know you'll have many many more!
 
Well, here's an update from last night. About 10pm, DH and I started to feel crappy, sort of hungry I guess. Im guessing that it's a drop in blood sugar, as it had been 5 hours since he had eated dinner. I fried up a few eggs, and we felt much better.

This morning I got up, DH had to go to work, so I had to make breakfast earlier than normal. We each had 2 eggs, and 2 piecec bacon, and our coffee.

I sent DH to work with a salad, and some chicken from 1 that I had roasted Tuesday. He packed up the salad, chicken, and grabbed the olive oil and viniger..he's good to go. I also threw in some roast beef and cheese, not knowing if he's going to want a snack.

I'm home with only 1 DD today, as DD6 went to work with DH..DD and I have errands to run, bank, grocery shopping etc...I'm sure I'll do okay, as I've already eaten breakfast. Im waiting for it to stop snowing, suppose to be just flurries, however I'm not too sure about that. I've got to get to the butchers, to get some steaks....this new George Forman is the best, and those steaks last night were good even though it was a crappy cut of meat from the grocery store.

Ive noticed that I may becoming constipated. I hadn't had a BM in a few days, and boy when I did...I am going to look at the store today for a fiber pill type thing. I CANT drink that metamucil crap for the life of me, it just aint gonna happen!...

I also noticed since using splenda quite a bit of gas. It was horrible!...I stopped putting splenda in my coffee, 2 days as of today without it, and I'm actually okay with unsweetened coffee. I also noticed the gas has subsided. DH hasn't noticed anything like this, and he is still using the splenda.

I also wanted to clarify for myself mostly- when I said my pants were 30's, I meant then in men's size..not womens. I was reading others journals, and noticed I probably didnt make much sense....most of my jeans are mens, but even a few of my womens jeans are 30's...

Okay, we're off for the day...gonna go find some t-bones and new york strips!...

Congrats on staying with it. A couple of suggeations for you. You could try fibercon pills. They really help. just drink lots of water with them. I take them 30 minutes after dinner. They expand in your stomach. It helps fight off my snack cravings. Evenings are dangerous for me. With the Foreman grill, I wouldn't suggest Tbones. The bone makes it difficult to make consistant contact with the meat. We always go with boneless cuts of meat. Have a great day.

Brandy, you're doing GREAT! You'll be a pro at this low-carb stuff in no time!!

If you're constipated, you may want to work more fat into your daily food. Fat is OK on Atkins, and will "grease the pipes" if you know what I mean. :D Your body is still adjusting to this new way of eating, so be patient, drink your water and hang on for the next few days, OK?

Well, things today went well!

never did make it to the butchers!...oh well theres always tomorrow.

Had Turkey and Cheese for lunch, then 1 egg about 3pm when I started getting hungry. According to fitday, I'm at 18 carbs for the day...not to shabby!

Went to Applebee's for dinner, had the chicken ceaser salad again, this time with dressing...no croutons. I have the half size salad with the full size chicken...GOOD GOOD GOOD...DH had the sirlion and something else...oh- spicey chicken wings...he was full.

I stopped at the grocery store and picked up some sugar free jello and coolwhip...might have a snack tonight..trying to not let this get monotnous.

No cravings today, a few hunger pains about 3 as I said, but other than that all is good. DH says no hunger pains or cravings at work today, he drank 64oz at work, and is still drinking now.

I stopped water at 80oz today, and just made a cup of decalf coffee, with 1/2 1/2 and NO SPLENDA!...

Chops are on the menu for tomorrows dinner, then hopefully I will get to the butchers tomorrow. Sunday the DD's and I spend the day at the Mountain skiing, so I wont have time then....

Grabbed some more veggies/salad at the store tonight, to get through till Monday, when the DD's are back in school..:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc Ooops, did that look like I'm excited for them to go back???

Gonna go do the dishes, put everything away, wipe the counters, and jump in the shower...DD7 is trying to catch up with her homework, she had 10 nights to do..think she did any? NAH...well, by this time tomorrow, she'll have read 40 chapters, (not long ones, magic tree house books etc..) and written 3 sentences regarding each 4 chapters....ha...she better get started!

Well, no snacking yet, no cheating!...

January 3, 2004, DAY 3 INDUCTION

Breakfast this morning, well, was quite a bit later than normal, I'll call it a brunch, as I haven't eaten lunch and dont plan on it...so for breakfast, (we went out ) I had...get ready, cause I was HUNGRY

2 eggs, fried, side order sausage patties, bacon & cheese omelet...

Ate it all by golly!...plus 2 cups decalf, 1/2 1/2 and no sweetner

Dh had only a bacon/cheese omelet, and the decalf

Just had 3 pieces of deli turkey, thats my snack as its now 2pm.

Bought the ketosis sticks- mine's changed color, dh's isn't yet...he's not happy bout that!...but I told him I cut my carbs/sugar a week ago, he started thursday..that could be why.

Okay...here's the after dinner update, and a few extra thoughts I have.

1st, dinner was good, I had ham steak, and a salad, DH had pork chops and salad.

Water is consumed for the day both of us are close to 100oz...peeing like crazy!...

Now for the random thoughts.

I find this diet to be quite a bit more expensive than the normal persons diet. Take for instance the fresh salad vegetables, now, I never made a salad so elaborate before, it was always just a "bag salad"...then the extra expense of only meat. Pasta is SUCH a cheap meal!.....I will still be cooking these foods, as DD's love pasta and homemade macaroni and cheese. However, I find that probably the reason a lot of youngsters in my DD's school are overweight is due to the price of convienence food. We have a"bump and dent" grocery store here, I can't eat anything they have, it's all processed, full of sugar, and other nasty stuff. I'm sure it's easier for parents to cook quick meals made up of this stuff, than it is to go to the butchers and buy t-bones...of course, I could be wrong, who knows.

I did peak on the scale today, though I wasnt suppose to. I really was just curious, and not changing anything by what I saw...though I will tell you, I did see a 4lb weight loss, DH got on it, and nada. I know men are suppose to loose quicker than us, however I think the extra 4 days of me cutting carbs, sugar and caffine out of my system did a lot of good. DH didn't really do any of these things, which means, he's really only got 48 hours under his belt. could be the reason.

Off tomorrow grocery shopping again, thought I could make it till Monday, but we're out of salad, and DH is actually glad I didnt make it to the butchers, as he wants to pick out his cuts. Got a call that the Ski Program for tomorrow is cancelled, had some bad freezing rain this morning, they're predicting the same for tomorrow...one good thing, I wanna get this house scrubbed, and everything put where it goes before DD's head back to school. Then I can finalize our trip this week while they're at school, and concentrate on some tasty meals for our dinner's

Sunday January 4, DAY 4 OF INDUCTION!!!

Alrighty- still in ketosis- DH joined me!!...YEAH!!...

Onward to the meals for today, I think I ate too much today...did have a few cravings, nothing serious, a piece of gum stopped the cravings.

Breakfast consisted of 2 eggs, and 2 slices bacon
Lunch was grilled chicken breast, and a large salad..
Dinner was suppose to be steak, but OMG it was nasty- more on this later...DH and I both ended up with bacon and cheese omelets...

For snacks, I had 2 servings sugar free jello, and 1 tbs non-dairy whipped topping ...(1 serving at a time, 2 times..)

Okay onto this meat crap. Well, let me tell you, I will NEVER buy another piece of beef from Wal-mart in my life!...we went there this morning to get salad stuff, veggies, and snacks for DD's for this week since they go back to school. The butchers wasn't open, so we decided to grab a pack of steaks...suppose to be 100% angus beef, yeah, sure it was in a different life. It was the driest, toughest, veiniest, nastiest piece of meat I have ever eaten!...uugghhh...hopefully DH will make the butcher tomorrow, we're suppose to be getting a nasty sleet/snow storm tonight and into tomorrow, so I wont be going. I just hope he gets there. Worst part is that this steak was a family pack...YUCK..4 more steaks. nope, there going in the trash...I dont even think my dog would eat them.

I watched the dateline special tonight with DH...we were impressed by the Atkins guy. DH doesnt like the thought of eating 4-6 quarter pounders, he's cautious about fat intake, so eat a few of them, and you've got hundereds of grams of fat. DMIL and DBIL are thinking of trying it, I guess DMIL bought some "atkins plan" off QVC for DBIL...he's watching us to see what happens..LOL... I think he could do it, he likes salads, and veggies, and is a meat eater...I dont think I've ever seen him eat real crappy snacks.

DH used a ketosis stick tonight, and it's turned! He came running out of the bathroom yelling 'honey we're gonna have another one..."...I said, oh, two lines?...

Okay, thats it for tonight, see you all tomorrow...

oh forgot- we blew up the exercise ball tonight, gonna start using that tomorrow.

Grest job on induction. You're flying through. Now that you are both in ketosis, don't worry about the sticks. They are really expensive. If you go off plan, use them again. For now, you are right where you should be. Keep up thegood work.

Brandy, I can just picture your DH running out of the bathroom, excited about his ketostick! :rotfl: Thanks for the giggle!

You both are doing GREAT! I've never used the ketosticks but I know there are many people who take scissors and very carefully cut them in half - twice as many sticks that way! :D

Monday January 5th, DAY 5 OF INDUCTION..

Today is the first day of induction that I'm home alone!...DD's are back in school, and DH's back to work...I should be working, but decided with the freezing rain, nope, I'll keep the car in the driveway today!..

Had eggs and bacon for breakfast this morning, along with our 1-a-day multi vitamin. 2 cups decalf for me, 3 for DH...he actually said he prefers decalf now over regular, no bitter taste???..who knew!

Sent DH to work with a salad and a few chunks of cheddar cheese and roast beef for snack. He has Tuna Fish at work, and when I talked to him earlier, he was planning on putting it in the salad.

DH went to Gold's today. YEAH! He left for work early, so him and 1 DBIL could go before...said he did his 45 minute weight routine and 45 minutes cardio..good boy!..

After hearing what he did, I ran downstairs and jumped on the treadmill that hasn't seen anything but dust in over 2 years. 45 minutes later, I had walked/jogged 4 miles... I did a few lat pull downs, and some upper body work on the weider gym. Did some stretching on the balance ball...Might do some crunches tonight

I had a salad for lunch, with jello for snack. Chewing gum right now..

Burgers and salad for dinner ( we only eat a small one at dinner)...I think I'm going to make bacon cheeseburgers. The kids will probably have burgers, along with potato chips. We'll have jello later for a snack.

Did a lot of thinking about Atkins and why people have negative thoughts about it. I think there's a big misconception that you can eat as much fat/cholesterol/bad stuff as you want. I thought that last nights Dateline program actually portrayed this. When the Atkins guy said "6 quarter pounders, no bun), and then later was shows eating 3 of them....I think thats why people think its not healthy. There is absolutely no reason why anyone should eat that way. Regardless of there being "no limit" on certain foods, you still have to use common sense. Your body would have a hard time buring 500 grams of fat a day!...along with 5000 calories..regardless of having carbs or not.. I think the best part about Atkins for me, is its given me reason to actually watch those things. We were always running to Wendy's, Mc D's etc.. during the week, as it was so much easier on basketball night, or karate etc... when in all reality what I was doing was setting up my DD's to eat like the rest of the overweight/obese people...was that smart? NOPE....but now, that I'm thinking about things, it's not easier to do that. It's actually easier to plan ahead, and schedule these things. DD's have a general schedule for their day to day routines, and now meal plans will be intregated. I see no reason why we can't eat at home, much healthier and still make the committments. Of course there will be times when we do go to fast food places, DD's wudnt want to give it up 100%, but 1 time per month versus 1 time per week is a lot better!

Oh well, enough ramblings....see ya tonight.

Alrighty day 5 night update...

Today was good, just like the rest, not many cravings that a piece of gum or dish of jello couldn't handle!

Had bacon cheeseburgers for supper, and jello. Planning on having small salad later on tonight when I get hungry...

Thats it for tonight, gotta go do some work on DH's laptop for the store.

1 day late....had a meeting last night, and no time, so here goes

Had 2 eggs and bacon for breakfast, antipasta salad no feta/tom/carrots for lunch, and nothing for dinner due to the meetings. Did have a serving of jello when I got home at 1130

Okay, onward to todays...

Wednesday January 7th, DAY 7 OF INDUCTION...


Okay- not a problem yet, tomorrow's the big day though, because DH and I both do our weigh in and measurements to see what 1 week of this plan has done. I have not exercised enough, and I know this, however this is a very busy time of year with my job, poor excuse I know...Curves opens January 19th, that'll definetly help. In the mean time, I'll be walking on the treadmill, and downhill skiing.

Food for the day...

Eggs/Bacon for breakfast
Chicken and Chinese Veggies for lunch
Chicken and Salad for dinner...

84oz of water so far... and no cheats, I gotta go fix that clippie!

DH had to go to Maine today, not sure what he ate, but when he gets home I'll post an update..

Thursday January 8, DAY 8 OF INDUCTION...AND WEIGH IN DAY!!

Okay- first for the news...this morning was weigh in day...

Mine was 151.5 loss of 5 lbs (YEAH!)

DH was 252.0 loss of 9.5 lbs:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

YEAH for DH! I was worried about him, as he hadn't snuck on the scale yet, or at least hadn't told me he did....He said to me last night, "this isn't working, my pants dont feel any different"..I said, DH, just give it time, trust me you've lost weight...Your in Ketosis, it's happening...

Now we did not measure ths morning, as I had an early morning meeting to get to. DH and I will do that tomorrow morning. I dont' want to measure in the evening, as our original was done in the AM.

For breakfast today we both had 2 eggs, 2 slices bacon, and our normal decalf with 1/2 1/2 no sugar/splenda

I sent DH to work today with a salad and turkey and cheese. I'm sure the salads gone, and he'll eat the turkey and cheese on his way to Golds.

I just fried up 2 eggs quickly and 2 slices bacon...I was going to have a salad, but I've got to get everything sliced up first. I was getting hungry, and felt it was better to actually EAT than to wait and risk overeating after. I will get the salad veggies cut up and put in the ziplock before my meeting this afternoon. (geez, I'm about tired of meetings!).

Dinner tonight is pork chops, and spinich, I'll have a salad as well, and DH will have a small salad. I normally split our salads so we can have 2 a day, and another veggie.

Okay thats it for now..

oh- Erin- I'm actually 7 days cheat free, I just forget to change it...oh and I JUST realized I can get a 5lb clippie too!..WHOOOHOOO
