My son was watching "A Pup Named Scooby Doo" on the Cartoon Network when a commercial for AMC's Monsterfest was aired. It showed clips from the movies The Exorcist, Poltergeist, Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play plus several others. These were not tame clips either. I was appauled. I know that Cartoon Network appeals to a very wide audience and most of it's shows are indeed adult-themed. But can they not figure out not to show horror movie clips during what is so clearly a children's show? :furious: I did email the network. We'll see what, if anything, happens.

ETA: This was shown between "A Pup Named Scooby Doo" and "Baby Looney Toons". :sad2:

Oh, I am right there with you. We had either a World Series game or a Bears game on the other day and a gory ad for one of the latest horror films came on, I think it was Saw III. I yelled to DD to close her eyes quick and was really ticked off. This was not late, well before 8pm and probably before 7p.

It is a sad state of affairs when you can't even watch a game with your child in the room.

Oh, and be prepared, I brought this up last year and was lambasted for "coddling" my child and making an issue out of it. :sad2:

Disgusts me. I really hate "adult" material commercials during shows where kids might be watching - this is a great example along with the Viagra/Cialis commercials during NFL games. Nothing like your 9 year old son asking what a 4 hour erection is.

You're kidding? That surprises me. We'll see what happens with this. This was aired around 8:30 this morning.

Does it? I mean really? It is the DIS after all. ;) :p

Nothing surprises me much anymore!! :rotfl:

I'd be upset during what are clearly marketed as kids shows. I know images like that would really upset my 7 yo. I think expecting the networks to hold off during a game no matter what hours it's on is unrealistic.

OK, I'm an adult and hate those commercials period! If it's late at night and one comes on, I have to close my eyes and plug my ears. They just freak me right out.

As for airing those commericals during kiddie shows, that is totally wrong. Kids do not need to see that stuff. Put them on after 9 pm when the little ones *should* be sleeping!

:thumbsup2 My kids like to watch the Food Network Challenge with me, the show itself is perfectly acceptable but I have taken to turning the volume down when the commercials come on because I never know what is going to come spewing out at me since the first time the kids were watching was one of the Viagra type commercials. Although, I will give them a pass in that the show does come on at 9 pm here. Also, have had to turn it off during NASCAR events. I've just turned to muting all commercials at all times if the children are in the house if I can catch it.

I hate the scary commercials too. I have one child that gets spooked easily and heck *I* get spooked easily. At least most of those will be going away after tomorrow.

Ok as for showing scary commercials during what are totally kids shows during the am...I'd be a little peeved too.

Showing viagara commercials and such during football games. C'mon now. You may not like it but there is probably no better time for these companies to show these commercials. It's simple marketing. They aren't trying to freak out your kids...and if they are old enough to ask...maybe they are old enough to hear the answer. Just be aware and distract or lower the volume.

Myst

The viagra commercials and others like that crack me up. You never know when "Bob" is going to make an appearance. I think that it's a safe bet that he'll do so during a sporting event considering who most of the audience is.

As for the scary movie ads, those pop up all during the day on almost every channel this time of year. The Cartoon Network considers itself a bit cutting edge so you may not be able to avoid them on that channel.

And this is why I have TiVo :teeth: No more erectial disfunction, no more Bob and his wife, no more annoying commercials period.

It just makes sense not to scare the pants off of little kids.

We have to watch out with "The Food Network", and some of the adult oriented channels. We wind up using our TIVO much more during October...and no randome channel flipping. I'm tired of seeing a dead body every 2 or 3 channels.

I'll coddle my kids, and myself too!

When my Dd was 4 yrs old she was watching the ABC Disney cartoons, Duck Tales, Scrooge McDuck, and Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers and the Bride of Chucky film clips were shown!!! I was horrified by such bad timing!!

I called ABC, NBC and CBS and Told them that my child and myself were frightened and I thought it was Irresponsible Child Programing. They all pulled those commercials during the early morning cartoons or the after school cartoons and never showed them again during Child Programing.

All TV and Radio station have to conform to FCC regulations about programing and you can put complaintes into their Station book that they must show to the inspector once a year.

Here is the Complaint Page of the FCC website!

Gotta Love my Directv Tivo!! We never have to watch commercials!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr to me that is just so irresponsible of them. Good for you for emailing them.

Holycow

I love how when they throw this stuff at us unawares, how were supposed to turn the channel, or use the tivo....give me break it shouldn't be shown during childrens programming period.

ITA, that drives me nuts. I end up keeping my kids from watching certain channels because they are just too unpredictable.

I don't know if they still do it now, but they used to show previews for horror movies before kids movies. I remember being about 8 years old and going to see 101 Dalmatians at the theater. They previewed the Amityville Horror beforehand and I didn't sleep for a week :earseek:

I have no idea what they were thinking doing that. Clearly a theater full of 8 year olds was not their target audience.

My dd has not been in a movie theater for two years--she won't set foot in one, and is terrified if I try to coax her in--because of a scary preview before The Polar Express Movie. It sucks.

As for TV, I don't mind sex/viagra commercials at all--BUT I do think the scary ones are inappropriate. Yes, even during a big game. Kids watch sports with their families--it's not just a man show, it's a family show. I shield my child from violence, that's it, not sex. Sex is part of a healthy life, lol.

One of the worst is watching channels like Discovery and they show commercials for their documentary type war shows--with really graphic violent bloody scenes and descriptions of war atrocities, terrorism, and other real horrors during kid/family shows. What are they thinking?!!
