Commercialize Christmas or ELSE!

No need to mock - I just thought it was interesting. :) I didn't mean to highjack. And to answer the OP's question, yes it's over commercialized. Christmas music and decorations started here in September. I think it's silly that I need to buy presents for those I love for one day a year. What about just appreciating them the other 364?

I wasn't mocking you at all. I was just playfully responding to Lisa's post
Did you read my previous post in reference to the OP's question? I am more than well aware of the origins of the holiday and its various traditions. If anything I was mocking my own response to the OP

Let's face it. We all know that Christmas is a big commercial racket. It's run by a big eastern syndicate, you know.

Nobody knows for sure the exact date of Jesus' birth, lilmermaid. The reason it is celebrated on Dec. 25 is NOT because Jesus was born on that exact day,but because the early Christian church stole it from the Pagans.

Pagans celebrate Winter Solstice which is usually on or very close to Dec 21.

You'd be surprised at how many of our 'holidays' originated in Celtic/Pagan traditions, lilmermaid. :)

*ETA Lookie what I found on Wikipedia! That explains it better than I could. :)***

I do agree with this!! Its true.

OK, I didn't read all the posts, but I think that regarless when Jesus was born, we have the right to celebrate if we like. I teach my kids that Christmas is not only gifts and parties, shopping etc.

We remember Jesus and what he did for us.

So I assume that for those of you who celebrate the Winter Solstice, do not believe that Christmas is about Jesus' birth, it is all just about marketing and selling toys, jewelry, Ipods, etc. that you in no way, shape or form celebrate Christmas. You don't have a tree, you do not go to your company's Christmas party, you do not exchange gifts, or any of the other Christmas traditions that others celebrate? Because I am always amazed by the people who say that do not believe in the true meaning of Christmas (celebrating the birth of Christ), and yet they put up a tree, exchange gifts, Santa comes to see them, etc.

If you are someone whose beliefs mean a great deal to you and you totallly do not celebrate the season, that I completely respect your beliefs, and I can see why this time of year would be frustrating for you.

However, if you are someone who still takes a part of this season and complains about it, then don't celebrate it at all.

To the OP, didn't you just have a thread about taking your child to see Santa Clause?

I was just kidding. I was laughing at the undead Persians punishing the Christians. I had this mental image of "The Mummy" where they are in the tomb and the army rises from the dead and starts chasing them. Made me chuckle. I pictured getting a knock on the door...... :teeth:

Jenna--as a (nonpracticing)pagan, I celebrate Winter Solstice AND Christmas. Why Christmas? I grew up as a Christian and I happen to like giving stuff to people, and getting stuff in return. Besides, it would be wierd NOT to celebrate Christmas as by this point in my life,it's so ingrained in me that I HAVE to celebrate it that I don't think I could not celebrate it if I tried. :)
I think Christmas is more about celebrating the wonders of the winter season and gathering around with the family to exchange gifts from the heart than it is about Jesus (since I don't believe he was a god, but he is quite interesting from a historical point of view).

And yes, I did post about taking my son to see Santa, which is something my mother wants more than I do,tbh.

I put up a CHristmas tree and I drag out all of my Santa dolls this time of year. I love seeing the pretty tree with all our ornaments and the Santa dolls on the entertainment center. It makes it more festive somehow and I enjoy them so much. It's sad we can't have them but only once a year. BUT if they were up all the time, they'd be less special. :)

And to everybody else who mentioned this thread was lighthearted and slightly irreverent, that's why I suggested in the OP to set your phasers to 'gentle whacking' only. Don't want anybody to get hurt. :teeth:
