No doubt, a reference to some sort of ornithology internship (if not, please post some pics).

No need to be sorry, "Beca was a 'Hooters' girl" is right on target ;) as I duck the magazine that my wife just threw at me from across the room. :) Must have been thinking out loud again. Feel free to change the topic any time. You go girl!

Y-ASK

Everyone needs to cut Becca some slack -- considering that she was ...the few, the proud....one of the "uber b-o -o-b er-s" girls....who had to endure the trials of dealing with the public! ;) :rotfl2:

OK. Everybody close their eyes, take a deep breath and try very hard to remember the topic of this thread. If no one remembers, it will be time for this thread to die. :)

Ya'll are cracking me up!!!! Remember....that was a LONG time ago!!!

(Sorry, Chuck!!)

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to post a copy of one of the "letters" ?

Block out the personal info and lets see the text if possible.

Personally, I suspect these letters are the thing of Urban Legend. Talked about often, but never seen.

If Disney was going to start dealing with commercial renters, common sense would dictate that those folks who have created websites for the express purpose of renting DVC would be the first to go down.

It would simply take one day, one court order, filed by Disney legal to temporarly enjoin the violator from advertising and renting. Then the renter would have to prepare to fight the court battle.

This has not happened, as the sites are still up and running.

Sorry, I don't have a copy. One was read to me over the phone. However, I can tell you that they DO exist, and that DVC sent them out certified.

You might be able to get one if you asked Disney legal; or since someone's guide mentioned it to them....maybe your guide could get you a copy.

This is my point about it being the stuff of urban legends:

"Somebody knows someone who had read it, as it was sent to someone they knew". And then "I read somewhere on the net that someones guide mentioned it during a presentation".

I don't think it exists......

That, coupled with all of the obvious commercial renters pressing forward completely unimpeded by DVD or anyone else...

I hope DVC is cracking down on com renters, and if these letters exist (I am not saying they don't ). I would think as many Disboards members as we have, someone would have gotten a copy and could post it.

Also, if they are cracking down so of the renters websites should be coming down before long.

Only time will tell.

Well, first I hope you all had a good Thansgiving. :goodvibes

The letter does exist, I promise. The part that is urban legend is the part about 20 rentals in a year. I have no doubt Beca's friend received said letter and specified his 20 rentals in a year. Thing is I had 20 -25 rentals over a 12 year period and received a letter stating that my reservations were subject to being cancelled and my DVC account subject to being frozen. I think some minute details change letter by letter to fit DVC's criteria of a commercial renter. I read the letter balled it up and used it to start a fire that night! Then Monday morning, I received it on Friday, I called a certain timeshare resaler and sold a majority of my points.

How would you feel if you took the time to contact DVC legal about your renting activities only to be told you were doing nothing wrong. You then receive a letter threatening your use of your DVC account and a possible cancellation of reservations? :confused3

It is this kind of treatment that I find frustrating. Told one thing only to see another happen. Hopefully DVC won't start either enforcing a rule or change things that affect your family directly.

I'm sorry but the real commercial renters are few and far between. I was certainly no commercial renter. In an effort to catch the big fish other innocent DVC'ers are geting caught up in the net. This is wrong!

Make no mistake, the letter exists in many forms. Now enforcing those threats is another thing. I doubt they ever will. I however, had enough of those idle threats and decided to hit DVC where it hurts, in the wallet.

Beca, sorry you are receiving the flames. I for one believe you.

I'm confused...how is selling your points going to "hit DVC where it hurts?"

Did you actually have any reservations cancelled or limitations placed on using your DVC account? Did you contact DVC legal after receiving the letter to ask for clarification? Did DVC legal provide a written opinion that "you were doing nothing wrong" or was it a comment made by a MS rep via the phone?

It sounds as though the letter is being sent to those members who surpassed some threshhold regarding rental activity. I think the majority of those recipients are likely to either stop renting or sell points (as you did) - without contacting DVC legal to try to straighten out any misunderstanding. DVC may be taking a shotgun approach at first to see how many will react to the general threat even though they would not actually be pursued. Those who choose to ignore the warning and continue the same rental activity may find another followup letter in the coming months.

I am similarly mystified. :confused3

I was under the impression that DVC made their money on the front end, when they sold the original contract. It seems like the buyer of your points would continue to pay dues...which DVC makes no profit on anyway.

Have I been misled? Gosh, I hope not!

How does your sale hurt DVC? For all we know, their actual reaction might be

I have been watching this thread and decided to see for myself what was available on e-bay. What I found really made me angry. One person (can I give screen names?) has booked all 3 spring break weeks in March and has them all listed for sale. Another is listing Christmas week and President's week and says he can get any other week. I don't care if these people meet the 20 reservation limit or not - they need to be stopped! It's not right to book prime weeks to sell - then the rest of us can't book.

It may or may not end up hurting but what does feel good on my end is that I am giving far less money to WDW and DVC on a yearly basis.

They are also losing a customer who would have added on in the coming years. They are also getting someone who was a fan of DVC and now ends up talking others out of purchasing.

I may be just one guy but I can effect DVC's bottom line. Watch for falling resale values in the coming years as DVC continues this path they are on.

I disagree. I've booked peak weeks for years. I would book a Christmas week and a spring break week. I would then list them for sale and end up getting around $15 per point for those peak weeks. I list with a total price for the 6 days I book, not per point.

These two weeks (12 days) were booked with MY points. Not once have I transferred in or out. So, what is wrong with using MY points how I saw fit? Would you be happier if I had booked those weeks and used them myself or given them to a family member? :confused3 Either way I booked with my points during propper booking timeframes and for that I see nothing wrong.

Commercial renting seems to be a hot topic here on the Dis. Personally I could care less if an entity owns 10,000 points and books only peak weeks to rent out. As long as they got those points legally and pay dues on those points they can do as they see fit.

If not for these boards you'd never even know what they are doing. Most of these people were encouraged to do just that by DVC. I was also encouraged to do this type of renting by my guide. Renting IS allowed, like it or not.

Sorry if this is firm. It really isn't towards you. Many share your views.

disclaimer: I no longer rent any points. I own only what I use. It wasn't worth the headache any longer and the grief from DVC.
