Hello all. I've been lurking around WISH reading the diet/exercise threads for a while now, but thought I'd actually post and say hi today.

I've always been tall and thin with a really fast metabolism, but somehow over the course of the past year I've packed on 20 pounds and I'm having a really hard time losing it. I'm 6' tall and last year I was an almost too-thin looking 160 pounds (I've got big bones) and a size 8. Now my old clothes are too tight, I'm in a 12, and I'm pushing 180.

I've had three things happen to me this year that I think has caused the gain:

1) I was diagnosed with random hypertension (nobody knows why) and put on blood pressure medicine. It's a beta-blocker which causes MAJOR water retention issues and makes losing weight a bit harder.

2) My bf just moved in with me, and it's hard to eat small salads for dinner when he's eating something good or when he's pigging out on a bag of chips.

3) I turned 30 and my metabolism must be slowing down.....

Anyway I've been exercising religiously for the past couple of months but I'm not losing anything, probably because I've been going out to eat a lot and drinking too much alcohol with the summer bbq and summer vacation (I'm a teacher so I'm not working right now) ;)

After weighing myself this weekend, though (where I discovered I gained 6 pounds in 2 weeks) , I've decided to REALLY kick up the exercise and try extra hard to watch calories/fat. I'm hoping to taper my blood pressure medicine off too so maybe that will help. I'd be happy if I could just lose 15 pounds, hopefully before cold weather gets here so I can get back into my jeans!!!!!

This board seems really supportive and I know I'll be posting a lot here. Sorry so long but it helps to get it all out "on paper."

CheshireVal - welcome to WISH!!! As you already know from lurking, this is a great place. The people here are so supportive and we want to encourage you to get to your goal. Post often so we can get to know you!

Hi CheshireVal..and welcome to WISH....I've only been here for a week and a half and have received SO much support! It's almost addicting!! The best advice I was given was to start a journal in the WISH journal section. It's been so motivating. Good luck and check in often.

Welcome to W.I.S.H.! :)

Best of luck to you in losing the weight and improving your health. You are already on the right track because you see the problem and are taking care of it now before it gets worse.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. :teeth: I've been doing pretty well with the diet and exercise this first week of "bucking down." I'm down 3 pounds, which is probably just water weight but hey it's a start!
