Have first timers joining on Columbus Day. They will only be there for 5 days and I want their experience to be a good one.

Here is my plan so far:

I am Planning to avoid the parks on the holiday itself for fear of wasting a hopper day for them just waiting on long lines. However the kids 5, 7 ,& 9 are pumpmed about WDW and I wanted their first day to include some of that Disney magic.

The pool in the afternoon and a character dinner to wet their appetites a bit? Tell me what you think! Thanks!

I've never toured on Columbus day, so I'll just bump this back to page one for you so that some of our veterans can offer advice.

We were there on Columbus Day 4 years ago and do not remember the park being overly crowded. Actually, it was worse the Saturday before as we went to MK and it was the only night Spectro was showing............very crowded.

Although Columbus Day was heavier than other days at that time, it's not so crowded that I would avoid it altogether unless you're going to be at WDW for a good length of time.

Here's our plan for that day. We will avoid AK since it's the Extra Hour Park (unless that schedule changes) and we'll avoid MK. That leaves us with MGM and Epcot. As you can see, this is our 5th day in the parks with AP's, so we're not pressured to squeeze something into every minute. You can see though, that our plan is to avoid the "e-ticket" type rides. We have time for those on other days.

10/11/04 Mon. – Park Day 5 (Columbus Day)
(AK EE day)
8:30 - walk to MGM
9:00 – Backlot Tour, Movie Ride, Star Tours, Muppet 3D, HISTK Playground
11:00 – back to room for lunch and swim
3:00 – Epcot WS for entertainment, movies, etc. Maelsrtom, American Adventure, Imagination?
6:00 – dinner at Canada?
7:30 - ??
8:30 – spot for Illuminations if missed earlier– or head back to room early

Here was my plan for 2002 on Columbus Day (we also had guests with us that day who had never been to AK, so we started there.) I also have the "actually what happened" part of my trip report for that day. I'll post it separately because it's rather long.

Plan

Here's that day from my trip report. I just thought it would give you a sense of what you can do.

Actual
We were ready early since my Uncle arrived early and was able to check in on his own. We didn’t have to wait long to get a bus to the Animal Kingdom and at 8:10 we were there for the Extra Hour Morning.

I sent everyone to It’s A Bugs Life where there was no wait while I went to get FP’s for the Safari. (dd5 and dh skipped this since dd5 is definitely not ready for this multi-sensory experience!) Since we couldn’t go in to the Safari until 9:00, we went through the Pangani area first and then, at 9:04, we were ready for our FP return at Safari.

Next we went to Camp Minnie-Mickey to see if we could get into the next Lion King show. We were seated within several minutes of the show. At 10:25 the Festival of the Lion King show was over and after a quick bathroom break, we made an attempt to get to the 10:45 Tarzan show.

We missed getting in by just a minute or two. No problem. We had already done what we at least expected we would do, so no one was terribly disappointed. We decided to try the Flights of Wonder Show that was to start at 11. I ran ahead with some of the group’s park passes to get FP’s for the Kali River Rapids. The rest of the group found seats and I met up with them shortly after. Coming to the Flights of Wonder turned out to be a great photo opportunity for dh. He got to go on stage to take video of the owl as it flew to the stage. Dh would argue that this pales in comparison to the lovely scene that he captured from the audience (one of the rather large birds was relieving itself on stage).

At 11:33, we split up so that we could do different things. My cousin, Aunt, and my dad went to see the 12:00 show of Tarzan. My mom and dd5 went back to the room. My uncle, dd7 and I went on Kali River Rapids with our FP’s and dh hung out at one of the bridges to take pictures of us on the ride. This was a first for dd7 and my uncle. (In fact, AK as a whole was new to my Aunt and Uncle and cousin.)

After we finished Kali and put our shoes back on (I always take my shoes and socks off and put them in the bin on this ride***update***they no longer allow you to do this), it was 12:10. My uncle and dh were going to wait for my dad and the others at Tarzan exit. Dd7 and I were going back to the room. We tried to divvy up our 2-way radios and cell phones so that no one was left without some form of communication in their groups. The 2-way radios are great if you’re in the same park, but the cell phones can be used just about anywhere. That really came in handy on this trip.

At 12:33, dd7 and I were walking back to the BW from the Swan. It was starting to rain a bit and I figured the rest of our group would get some rain before they returned. We had lunch in the room and continued with our plan for the day. At 2:35 we were on our way to MGM – a little later than planned. We saw the boat over at the Beach Club, so we walked to the Swan to get boat. One of our top priorities was the Millionaire show. I got FP’s for Millionaire. The return time wouldn’t allow us to watch the whole parade, but for some reason, I decided to lead my group over to the start of the parade route so we could at least catch some of it. I’m not sure if we did something else at this time, I lost track if we did. We got a spot and it was almost 4:00. We only found enough room for a small group of us to be up front. As time went on, we seemed to be pushed farther back. I remember one mom in particular who shoved her kids up in front of us which pushed my kids in front of the rope. My kids were told to back up, but they really didn’t have much room to back up with these other kids on their heels. I knew we were only going to be able to see about 10 minutes of the parade because of our FP for Millionaire. We backed up when the time came and let everyone behind us get a better view.

I was finally getting the hang of the Millionaire key pads, and I actually got my seat number up on the top ten board at one point. Dh’s was also up a couple times. That was cool, but we didn’t get to the top. At 5:00, we were leaving the Millionaire show and after a quick bathroom break we did the Great Movie Ride. I finally got to see the cowboy scene (usually they only have the ganster side runner while we're there). We were finished there at 5:37 and it was time to prepare for our long wait for Fantasmic. Our first goal was to get some supper to take into the Fantasmic theatre. There are a few counter service food places near the Rockin’ Rollercoaster. We chose different places to get our food. Our family was split between the pizza and the burgers.

Fantasmic was scheduled to start at 7:30. We were waiting since just after 6:00. We ate in our seats and took turns going for additional snacks or whatever. We ended up with some raisin cookies and ice cream sandwiches from the snack booths at the top of the seating area. We sat a bit closer to the front than I had sat before. We used our ponchos a couple times to avoid the spray of water in the wind. It really wasn’t that bad. This show was a first for my Aunt and Uncle and cousin.

The mass exodus after Fantasmic is always interesting. We had to get the stroller and thought we lost part of our group at the turn, but eventually we were all together and took the path that goes left past the stroller parking area. We walked back from MGM and we were back in the room at 8:46.

Thank you for that excellent report! I've been wondering about Columbus Day myself and a bit surprised at the lack of information about it. I'll be there over Columbus Day, though unfortunately not until next year, and have been wondering what to expect. It sounds like you were able to accomplish a lot!

We were at Disney in Oct 2003 - we arrived on Columbus Day. Even though we had an early flight and arrived at 9:30 AM, I had that as a "down day" with no parks planned (I had read about how busy it would be that day). We went to Downtown Disney, did some swimming, and went to Ohanas for dinner, then walked down to the beach for the fireworks!

We did not find the parks that busy at all! We walked on a lot of rides, or maybe had a 10 minute wait. It was great!!! We did MNSSHP and again found it to be mostly walk on!

I would definitely go again that week - we had a great time!!!

We went last year for that week and found it to be better than our late April trips as far as crowds go. For us it is Thanksgiving weekend and I know quite a few Canadians have plans on going back down.

hi there -

Although I can't offer advice (since I haven't been there on Columbus Day before) I thought I'd tell you what our plan was for this year since we're arriving on the 10th.

We arrive on Sunday, early afternoon, and are using the rest of the day to stock out on supplies, settle into the hotel and then head to a dinner at Chef Mickey's. We are travelling with a family who has never been so we thought a festive dinner would start the trip off well.

I know that MK will probably be busy on Columbus Day/Monday BUT I don't think a trip is a trip without starting it in MK so that's where we're headed. We'll get there early and just take it as it comes. It'll be fun just being in the park and using FP will help. Afterwards we're taking the monorail to 'Ohanas for dinner.

Hopefully we'll all have fun and the weather will cooperate!

:)
