Coloring or highlighting a childs hair???

My older dd is 13 and has been highlighting her hair for about a year. A good highlighting job is so natural that no one knows you're doing it. She did it to enhance her natural color. She loves it.

This is what we do with dd's hair. Her natural hair has a mousy gray dull color to it. A little highlights makes it look sooo much better.
But then again I have been changing and dying, perming, highlighting my hair for 22yrs so I just don't see it as a big deal.

Now as far as the hair color comment...well her hair is the exact color & texture (coarse & thick) as my brothers. I have not told her that her hair is ugly but encourage highlights to enhance her hair appearance.
She also has to have her upper lip waxed. Some of us need more beauty enhancements than others.

I was wondering how long it would be before someone went off about that one. :D I look at it like this: my eyes don't change their functioning due to the age of the person I'm looking at. So if I could look at an adult's hair, think it's ugly, and advise her to get it colored (preferably without saying flat out that I think it's ugly, because that's just rude), why couldn't I do the same for a child? I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the DD in question didn't have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the hairdresser's chair, so I vote more power to both Mom and DD. [/QUOTE

What I posted was not "going off", it was my personal opinion. If I decided to "go off" believe me you would know. Even the person who posted about her DD hair admitted that "ugly" may have been to strong of a word. I believe that there is to much emphasis on physical beauty at to young an age.
Again, I have no problem with hair coloring. I have been doing mine since I was 14. I just think elementary school is to young. If you can do all the "big kid" stuff at such a young age, what is there to look forward to?

I agree it's just hair, but that would be my stance for older kids. I think at age 7 it's still pretty much the parent's choice. My answer to my kids will always be "I think you're beautiful/handsome just the way you are." When they are old enough to buy it and apply it themselves, I'll let them make that choice.

MHopkins, I've got to say - I hope you're a beautician if you make a habit of advising people to color their hair - no matter what their age!

I just wanted to say that around here it isn't the girls coloring their hair more, it is the boys. They all do that spiky blonde thing at the tips.

Heh. Well, I'm not talking about strangers off the street! I don't know about your girlfriends, but me and mine give each other unsolicited advice all the time. It's taken in the spirit it's intended - lotsa love. :) Or occasionally the harsh but necessary truth: "Michelle, I love you, but those pants make your butt look enormous. Change into something else NOW." If you can't rely on your girlfriends, who can you rely on?? :)

*quaking in my boots* :) Lighten up gemmie - I wasn't attacking you with "go off" - that's my default term for "responding negatively to a post by another poster."

To me personally, age 7 is too young for a dye job even if it's just blonde tips or whatever they are called. I think Jr high school is a more appropriate age, but I'm not the parent and don't know what's best for someone else's kid either. ;)

I've been coloring my hair for almost 18 years and I'm only 31!
I admit at age 14 my parents had a fit when I'd colored my hair purple and then continued to defy them by having shades like pink, blue and other not so natural colors.
Eventually my tastes changed and I went to just auburn, reddish brown or darker browns which is what I still use now. In fact I used Clairol Natural Insticts Cinnaberry just yesterday! LOL!
:upsidedow

I have very healthy hair, maybe I'm lucky or maybe having a very short pixie cut helps since I get it cut every 4-5 weeks!

Is there a magic age for everything? I think its more up to the individual childs maturity and the reason they want something. There's also a big difference in wanting some highlights as opposed to something that requires more responsibilty like a piercing or contacts instead of glasses. There's many other things to look forward to when they are older.....driving, dating, HS sports, dances, parties, jobs, cars.

As for the OP, the hair is probably a phase and will be gone in 6 weeks. We have a 11 year old Boy Scout that had his ear pierced before our last campout and the dad had to run home because the scout forgot his earring and couldnt go the entire weekend without it in because the hole will close. This scout is very unresponsible so I'd bet after a few more weekend camps his hole will either go closed or get infected from not cleaning it. Age isnt really the issue, maturity is.

This is my opinion and I am sure to get flamed for it.

It is just hair. It is not permanent, hair will grow out.
My husband always says he doesn't care if our kids have purple hair with pink polka dots done up in a mohawk, cause it is not permanent.

There are bigger, more difficult battles to fight in life such as smoking, drugs, alcohol etc.

Again, just our opinion and neither of our kids has ever had purple hair with pink polka dots either, but if that is what they want to do then............
:D

If bald was in fashion for women, I'd be bald - hey, it's only hair!!!
And I totally agree, there are more important things in this world to be concerned about - bigotry, drugs, etc, etc.

7 year old yes I do............

My 14yr old is going to put a semi permanent colour through his hair, but it will only give him highlites anyway.:D

Hey Nutsy - were your the Aussie on the Magic in August that helped me and Anton sing "Waltzing Matilda" at Dueling Pianos?!

Just curious!
