My older dd is 13 and has been highlighting her hair for about a year. A good highlighting job is so natural that no one knows you're doing it. She did it to enhance her natural color. She loves it.
This is what we do with dd's hair. Her natural hair has a mousy gray dull color to it. A little highlights makes it look sooo much better.
But then again I have been changing and dying, perming, highlighting my hair for 22yrs so I just don't see it as a big deal.
Now as far as the hair color comment...well her hair is the exact color & texture (coarse & thick) as my brothers. I have not told her that her hair is ugly but encourage highlights to enhance her hair appearance.
She also has to have her upper lip waxed. Some of us need more beauty enhancements than others.
Or occasionally the harsh but necessary truth: "Michelle, I love you, but those pants make your butt look enormous. Change into something else NOW." If you can't rely on your girlfriends, who can you rely on??
