College parents...fall semester?

As was mentioned at my daughter's high school graduation, this class was born in 2001 beginning the era of 9/11 changes.

For this region, these students started kindergarten in the shadows of Hurricane Katrina.

They have been witness to news reports of school shootings and had active shooter drills become the new normal in school.

They have seen the recent wave of racial tensions and changes and the changes for women's equality and LGBTQ issues.

In my state we are finally changing our state flag this week. And young people are embracing the changes.

These kids today have already seen and survived and been resilient. It's what they've had to do.

They are better equipped to handle any of this than we are.

I am excited to see these kids go forward and be the change needed in so many areas of our world and truly optimistic that they will be successful.
I wish I could be. All I see is chaos and death. I just don't see how their lives will be better.

They confirmed the number, which was never the issue. But it makes a big difference whether that number occurred within a week or six months!

The poorly-written story says the university confirmed 143 cases "over the weekend," but is that cases occurring over the weekend, or the university statement being made on the weekend.

Too much Twitter "journalism" going on with no actual reporting.

My son wants to go into res this fall. He knows the classes will be on line. He knows his team won't be playing, but there's a small chance they might be practicing. He also doesn't want to miss out on the chance to get a room for winter semester, particularly if normal classes resume. He knows I worry about him being lonely and overwhelmed. I also worry about a resurgence of the virus (second wave) and him being in a petri dish. But we are 3 hours away. If all his classes are online anyway, he could choose to spend some days at home and others at school, depending on what's happening and how he feels (and what's medically safe). I'm loathe to spend that money if we don't have to, but we did plan to spend it anyway, so it's not a real loss.
We're in a similar situation -- 4 hours away -- but the back and forth is not a simple concept. Every trip home carries the risk of bringing covid home. Every trip back carries risk of taking covid back to campus.

My daughter will be 2 hours away and staying. I think she came home twice her first semester.

My kid will be on campus . Even if she were to contract this virus she has a 99 % chance of surviving it so we will take our chances. Plus if the herd immunity theory is true we are well on our way.
To the poster who made the comment about international students coming I have been told with the closed borders that’s not happening in the fall.
I will be honest I really struggle with why people are treating this like the Black Plaque of the 1300’s. Does it spread fast absolutely but is it going to wipe out an entire population the numbers say no! Wear your mask , social distance and live your life.

I agree.

My father was the eldest of 9 children growing up in the depression. He learned to squeeze a quarter till it cried. Instead of going to college, he was landing on the beach in Normandy. There was evil in the world but his generation stood strong.

When the peace was won, he went to college, married, bought a home raised a family and lived a wonderful life. His future wasn’t gone, only delayed.

It is understandable to mourn the perfect future planned for your children. But after you do that, focus on providing encouragement and moral support. Help them to see the possibilities.

Attitude is everything. I have confidence in our young people. The finest steel goes through the hottest fire. I’m excited for their future... it may be unconventional but is still full of promise.

Which school?
Florida State University

My son is leaning toward keeping his dorm contract, his scholarship pays for it anyway. If he does not contract for Fall, he could be out of the dorms for Spring as well, they would give his apartment space to someone else.

I agree with what you are saying on the reporting. There is very little journalistic integrity around today, unfortunately. My mistake was assuming it happened recently, which may not be the case. I apologize for that.

However, it still shows that when you bring together large groups of people on campuses, this is a very real possibility. Even if it DID happen back in April, it could very easily happen in September particularly when cases are still on the rise and students are coming from all over the country.

I also find it concerning because if it did happen a while ago, weren’t most of the students already sent home? Were they operating at a full campus or were there only a limited amount of people there to begin with and then it happened?
I don’t live in GA, so I honestly don’t know, but it certainly warrants asking those questions.

We are definitely not on the way to herd immunity. In fact, the antibodies may only last a short period of time and we may never have herd immunity.

It may not wipe out an entire population, but it has already proven deadly for those who are elderly, have chronic diseases, immune compromised, as well as perfectly healthy people with no known underlying causes. They are also finding that those who do recover can also have ongoing complications with their lungs, etc. which could affect them for the rest of their lives. Scientists have also already determined that it is very likely becoming more contagious as it has mutated. We simply don’t know if that also means it will become even more deadly as it continues to mutate. There are a lot unknowns.

I am certainly not advocating locking ourselves in a closet until it goes away. I do wish, however, everyone would simply wear a mask and social distance and wash hands, etc.. The problem is many won’t and many more will get sick and die as a result.

I hope this fall will turn out better than expected and I wish your daughter a wonderful, fun filled semester!😊

DD will be starting her senior year, and has an apartment near campus.
She is a Biomedical Science major, and will be having mostly in person classes. It would be very difficult to have strictly online for her classes at this point.

Try learning head and neck anatomy online.... Not even close to a replacement for hands on learning in the Cadaver Lab. Would you like your future healthcare provider to have their "training" online, and then treat you in person?? I would not...

Yes, cases will go up.
But these young adults need to build a future.

There are no perfect answers to this Sh*t Show called 2020!

Agree 100%. What school?

Marquette University in Wisconsin
She also submitted her applications to dental school (10 schools) for Fall 2021, fingers crossed!
:thumbsup2

Best of luck for dental school! My daughter is also a Biomedical Science major (entering freshman), but will probably lean toward research rather than clinical.

Most of my son's classes are now listed as 'Blended' learning. I am assuming that they will have part of their time in classroom and part learning online. As long as his time in the engineering labs is not compromised, I think he'll be ok with that. Doing his engineering tools lab for the last 2 months online was a disaster. Nothing like switching from using lathes and machine shop tools to making popsicle stick catapults (literally).

Thank you!
Any specific area of research? My DD's roommate seriously considered genetic research/counseling...she's taking her MCAT next week (delayed due to virus), and has applied to med school(s).

No specific area at this time.

Last summer (between Jr and Sr year in high school) she had a great research internship at Florida International University. She did actual hands-on DNA research, under the direct one-on-one mentorship of an MD/PhD, in a National Institute of Health-funded study of gene-editing.

20+ hours per week, IN the lab, for 8 weeks -- plus a professional development workshop each week on a wide range of topics. At the end of the internship, they had a symposium and each intern presented their paper. AMAZING opportunity!

That does sound like a super opportunity, good for her!!

I'm currently in school for my MBA so while my kid isn't at college I am. All the fall classes in my program have been moved to online. All of them already offered both online and in person so they are just all moving everyone to the online syllabus. I was going to take an in person class this fall but they moved it online and I'm fine with it. I don't want to be on a campus with thousands of people at this stage anyway and it makes it easier to balance work, school, and parenting. My wife is happy about it.

Because of rising cases across the country, does anyone think that some of these schools will make a new announcement that they aren't going to reopen campus and everything will go online, with kids staying at home? My son's school will reopen with hybrid classes (still determining what each individual class will do) and they are re-configuring dorm assignments (again, still determining). But I'm waiting for them to give up and tell everyone to stay home. .
