College entrance cheating scandal

We have literacy volunteer groups here teaching people how to read & write. I'm sure there is a particular curriculum they have to follow. Although, these volunteers do have their hearts in it.

I still can't wrap my brain around WHY two seemingly uber-intelligent people, Felicity Huffman and her hubby, did this? :headache: I think it had more to do with them feeling guilty at not taking the TIME to teach their own girls or finding good tutors. That's why I said they should be forced to spend the TIME as prison sentence to teach other people's children, what they didn't spend on their own.

Maybe I missed something? Why are you blaming Macy?

It was mentioned that Felicity said in an email or tapped phone call that Macy knew and was on board with what she was doing. The police & prosecutors couldn't charge him with anything as they don't have any emails or phone calls by him implicating him.

This is the latest from TMZ Live:

Felicity pled guilty yesterday, along with the 13 other parents, which is what the prosecutors wanted. The prosecutors recommended a minimum of four months for Felicity & those others to spend in prison. (Ultimately, a judge can decide differently.) Felicity only spent $15,000 on the college cheating scandal.

The prosecutors told Lori Loughlin & the 14 other parents to accept their plea deal or else the charges & prison time go up. (It also is already up because of the amounts they paid. $500,000 for Lori Loughlin & DH. That alone means the prosecutors would recommend they spend a minimum of 2 years in prison. Others who paid way more, their charges & prison time go up exponentially, according to how much they paid.)

TMZ posted this on their website, last night at 1am (PT). TMZ knew that if Lori didn't take the plea deal that the prosecutors would go to the grand jury and ask them to add on the conspiracy to commit money laundering charges. TMZ knew that that Lori & others were on the clock. But, TMZ thought Lori & others would have a couple days to accept the deal.

NOPE. Today is when the prosecutors upped the charges to include conspiracy to commit money laundering. NOW, that raises the prison sentence from 2 years to 4 years, nine months in federal prison. So even if she cops a plea now, their recommendation is 4 years, nine months. Again the judge can do anything s/he wants. But that conspiracy to commit money laundering is a huge charge. In essence, it says that all those 16 parents are part of a group conspiracy. (Even though none of them knew each other. It is estimated that they spent about a total of $4 million together, with that one guy as the ring leader of them all. So, it's a worse charge than the college cheating ever was.

Who the heck is Lori & DH's lawyer? They should have taken the 2 year deal. :sad2: Did they run out of money after paying the $500,000 so they can't afford a decent lawyer & PR rep now to have been properly advising them? :confused3

I'm not blaming the attorneys. I'm sure they totally understand it's not playtime with the feds and tried to make that clear to their clients.
For the 14, I think it may be habitual entitlement. Consequences rarely affect them.
Maybe they convinced themselves it will all blow over, be forgotten in a couple of weeks.
These new charges might be a wake up call about the seriousness of it all.

Yes, of my little "TV legal dramas" education, ;) the attorneys must always present any deals to the clients. Yet, it is always the clients' decisions whether to accept any deal or not.

Again, I just can't wrap my brain around some of these mentalities.

I don't really think that's a fair assessment, since we don't know what the 14 additional parties have been doing.

Sure, they haven't been signing autographs - but they've likely all been going about their normal lives.

The other defendants aren't household names and likely can walk about in public unrecognized for the most part. That may be the single advantage they have over the actresses. Many of those same more anonymous defendants have not only been criminally charged, but this was career ending for them, as a felony record bars them permanently from their former livelihood. Those without a very serious stockpile of cash and assets at their disposal may be looking at a harsh reality of a future they never dreamed of.

I wouldn't inflict them or their superior attitudes on children, or anyone else. I vote for hard work and lots of it, without an opportunity to display even a hint of superiority to those their efforts would benefit. Cleaning toilets, showers, kitchens and doing laundry at a homeless shelter is definitely hard, and humbling, work -- all the while keeping them from being an ounce of smug or entitled in the face of those in need.

Something more than, say, stuffing envelopes for 2 days? :rolleyes1

Maybe, maybe not. You can always just check "no felony" on job applications and hope the companies don't check. Many don't, especially smaller companies.

Maybe. Small companies may not want to pay for a background check. But the google machine is free, quick and easy. Once the names become a little more public it may be harder to hide their past involvement.

They deserve what they get.
Let’s see how the Court decides to play this out.
I’m rather glad it’s still making headlines and not pushed under the rug for the Elitists. And their Unknowing kids.. I’m not buying it for most of them. They get their Scores. Did they suddenly Ace it?? I think not.
The whole thing is disappointing and despicable for all those that do it the correct way.

This is quite the read. She's a little late to the reality party.

"The former Hallmark actress “is beating herself up for not accepting the initial deal,” a source told Entertainment Tonight."

"Lori is finally realizing just how serious this is,” the source said. “She is seeing the light that she will do jail time and is freaking out ... It feels like her whole world is falling apart. She is putting all her trust in her team and her lawyers, and hoping for the best.”

I had also heard that one of her daughters is not talking to her......???

This thread is an excellent example as to why our criminal justice system is so based on punishment. It's like it's personal or something.

Translation: "Wait, you mean the rules really do apply to me?"
