I actually don't have a horrible aversion to the house arrest idea, simply because there would be zero cost to taxpayers and I've seen just how much house arrest does get to those who fought tooth and nail not to spend any time behind bars. It is pretty surprising exactly how chafing people find any level of restriction, and I imagine those with great wealth and privilege would find it very challenging. I don't like the idea of taxpayers spending a dime to house these losers. They wouldn't be in max security if incarcerated anyway, medium to min security, so not taking the place of violent offenders anyway.
I do think community service should be a big component -- and not the type of assignment of their own choosing. I think many shifts cleaning toilets, showers, kitchens and doing laundry at a homeless shelter would fit the bill quite nicely indeed.
Since money is no object in their minds I'd also hit them with a big, fat fine.
