College Care Packages~ UPDATE

I would have killed any dormmates that had an airhorn.

It's good that you have a great sense of humor to send him funny things. I didn't get too many care packages when I was in college, but my mom did send me cards from time to time. On my birthday she got me a birthday basket that had a lot of different candies / bubbles / silly string type things in it. That was cool.

I had one friend who was always sent a case with boxes of his favorite Aunt Anne's (think that's it) macaroni and cheese!

Wow, what a great thread.

Just wanted to add one item that I had in college that got used A LOT and might make a good care package item or Christmas present.... a Leatherman multitool.... it's a knife, minature saw, screwdriver, etc... all rolled into one handy package. I can't tell you how many times we needed a knife (to open packages, for instance) or screwdriver at school. I've seen them at Costco for a fairly reasonable price (maybe $35 or so?).

Also, a flashlight (in case of power outage) is a good thing to have.

You could probably make up a whole mini-tool-kit (small hammer, mix of nails/screws, allen key, etc...) if you wanted.

Y'all are great moms. I got two packages. ONce a birthday cake and then bras for V-day. Not sexy bras at all. LOL

I have 14 years to prep :)

I think the mini-tool-kit is a great idea!! Especially for boys who like to "fix" things~lol! I'll look for the leatherman tool. I had thought of a Swiss Army knife....same general idea it sounds like but to include it with other small fix tools would be great :woohoo:

Bumping up these great care package threads for some ideas for those of us sending our kids off to college this week.

So funny to see this bumped up. I commented on this thread when my DD just went off to school and this is her last year!!!!
I did want to add one thing that was a huge hit over the years.
FLYING MONKEY...Screaming

They are on amazon.
I sent a box full to her roomates. They had soooo much fun with those things.

My daughter is just going off for her first year of college (today actually) and this thread was full of great ideas so I bumped it. Thanks to all of you for sharing your great ideas!

bumping for clh2

Thank you cruisinfamily. I took a look at just the first page...LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the homecoming idea. Might have to sneak over to the bookstore to get something appropriate for that one!

he lives for food but is in a dorm with only a micro and has UNLIMITED DINING PLAN (that so far...he LOVES the food) :rolleyes1
Even if he does like the food, you can't go wrong sending him snacks. My college cafeteria had good food too, but dinner ended at something like 6:30, so it was always nice to have snacks for later in the evening. Also, I remember that after a while the food became repetative and something different was unexpected.

Rice Krispie treats travel better than cookies and have a long lifespan. My family prefers them made with crunchy peanut butter. When holidays arrive (not so many in the fall semester), you could throw in some seasonal sprinkles.

Another food treat that requires little effort on your part: Call him to make sure he's in his room, then order him a pizza (pre-paid with your credit card, don't forget to tip the driver) so all he has to do is walk downstairs to pick it up.

Also, keep it small. Numerous small packages trump on big package.
popcorn:: all GREAT ideas....thanks! I'll try the cookie thing in the coffee can and if that doesn't work 'll try bar cookies like Dismom24 suggested
I personally never have coffee cans, but it strikes me that you could do the same thing with a Pringles can. Just bake the cookies the right size to fit in the can, and they'd travel well. I think I'd have to bake a BUNCH of cookies and choose just the right ones to mail . . . but we here at home would be willing to make the sacrafice and eat the improperly sized cookies.
How about movie passes to one of the theater chains in his area?

Or even a monthly subscription to Netflix? He can keep order the movies online, have them delivered to him and keep them as long as he wants with no late fees...
Not helpful, but I was super-surprised to learn that my daughter's dorm has a Redbox in the lobby!
Plus cold medicines were so expensive!

PS he wont need a sled, we just used cafeteria trays for sledding. :rotfl2:
OTC cold meds were free at our health center. No appointment, just walk in. Ten minutes later you'd have a bagful of medicines of your choice. About $200 of your tuition goes to run the health center. Use what you've already bought!

They'd quit giving out cafeteria trays whenever bad weather approached at our school. We were always so irritated at having to balance multiple plates and cups, but I do understand their reasoning!
GREAT Ideas Naples! I especially like the scissors idea!! :cheer2:
Shouldn't a college student go away with a basic set of desk supply items? Scissors, stapler, etc.?
