Hi,
We are taking our first DCL cruise in late May to Mexico. I've read there is a Cold Box (not a refrigerator??) in the rooms? I need to bring soy milk for my will be 5 year old. Will this keep it cold? How does a Cold Box work? Is it as good as a fridge?

Thanks, Sue

Cold box ... I put some water bottles in the one in our cabin (category 6) and 5 days later they still weren't chilled ... just barely cool.

I'd bring a small cooler and ask your host/hostess to bring you ice ... or maybe they can put the soy milk in a frig for you.

I've read on these boards that you can "pre chill" drinks in an ice bucket (your steward will bring you fresh ice-- I believe twice a day if you request it) and once they're cold, put them in the cold box. But for your situation, I'm not sure how practical that would be.

I agree that those "cold boxes" are pretty much useless. There are no controls that I could see, and it really didn't seem like there was any cooling going on in there at all. They seem like they were designed to be like a mini bar that you might find in a hotel room. There is an outer door with narrow shelves on it, and then the door to the cold area itself. The strange thing is, I cannot conceive of why anyone would have thought that a mini bar would be a good thing on a cruise ship. Does anyone know whether these things were designed to be mini bars, or ever used for that purpose?

I believe they were used as mini-bars in the very beginning of DCL's existence. We were on the Maiden Voyage of Magic I do seem to remember them as mini-bars...

And, I have always found that they keep things cold enough....it may be hit or miss as to how cold each individual one is.

It is basically a mini-fridge without the device to keep things cold like on a normal refrigerator. If you put something cold in, then it will stay somewhat cold for awhile. Can not be used for medicine or anything that must be refridgerated.

How about packing a couple of the gallon size Ziploc bags and each day filling them with ice from the ice bucket, zipping them up and keeping them in the cold box? This will help to keep the temperature inside the box nice and cool.

How about asking for a real fridge? They have to have them for diabetics etc to keep meds cold and if your child requires soy milk you could even have your MD write a note if necessary.

They are designed to maintain about a 50 - 55 degree F temperature. If you need a refridgerator for medical purposes, request one.

Have you asked Disney if they'd provide you Soy Milk for you? I have heard of them providing Lactaid milk and some others. You might not have to bring your own with you. I'd ask Disney if they have it available.
Just a thought, might solve your problems.

I have heard that Soy milk is available on the ship but I would still double check just to be sure.

Thank you all so much for all your comments. I will definitely try to check with Disney to see if they provide soy milk and what kind (do I just call the Disney Cruise Line Number??). There are many different soy milks and only some are fortified so I probably will bring a box or two anyway "worried mom that I am" :D Not to mention that she only likes this one brand - we have tried others and she said "this tastes funny" Fortunately, the soy milk we buy does not have to be refrigerated UNTIL it is opened so I will try the Ziplocks full of ice in the Cold Box if they don't have fortified soymilk on board.
Thanks again!

Sue

They certainly have soy milk (don't remember whose brand) and Lactaid as well for those who need that variant as well. They are very agressive on dealing with people/kids with dietary requirements, give them a call.
