Family in Texas calls every soft drink Dr. Pepper. "What kind of Dr. Pepper do you want? Orange Soda"

Wow, that's a new one. I grew up in Texas, but it was coke where I was. I have never heard the words Dr. Pepper used in place of coke anywhere in the south before.

Here in the South it is traditionally "Coke" for any kind, however I've noticed that waning more in favor of "Soda." If you go to more rural areas or talk to older folks, they will definitely call it "Coke." Now, if you go way out into the deepest of the deep South, you will find that "RC Cola" is king and there are no other choices. Full stop. Get you an RC and a Moon Pie!

You realize that Texas used to be the only state you could buy Dr. Pepper? First sold in Waco. And it is still the best selling soft drink in the state.

Nothing to add other than I remember watching the movie Down and Out in Beverly Hills where there was a rich Chinese guy at a party being asked what he wanted to drink. I knew a little bit of Chinese from my Chinese-speaking friends and the exact words of the character were 气 水 (qi shuī) which can be literally translated as "air water", which implies some sort of carbonated beverage, soft drink, or the like. But then again 气 (qi) can mean so many things, including air, energy, or sprit.

But this character had a translator with him and she said in English that he would like a Tab. Go fig.

We call it Soda. If ordering at a restaurant we use the term what we want. Coke is called Coke. If you want Diet Coke, Root Beer or Ginger Ale you use those words. My family members from Western Pennsylvania use the general term Pop. But do the same as we do when at a restaurant .

I call it both Coke and soda. I can't remember where I picked up Coke/soda, what I said when I lived in CA and OK. I'm thinking I grew up calling it soda but when moved to OK, started saying coke. Or it may have been the other way around since my exH was in management at Coke???? Getting old and don't remember. I think I mostly say soda now. It's probably the only thing I remember about my business class was how brandnames become generic. Bandaids, Kleenex, etc.

Me either.
Just like I don't understand why Pepsi dropped their lemon lime soda Sierra Mist, and replaced it with a lemon line soda called Starry. A friend was crushed that they dropped Sierra Mist, but after trying Starry she says it seems the same to her.
Trade Mark or copy write licensing
pepsi or PepsiCo lost the use of the name Sierra Mist…..
‘or atleast that is what a distributor claim was

Soda is the common general term by me. Specific brands are called by their names. A number of the more local brands have faded away over the years.

Same here in MD we call it soda but when ordering use the words Coke, Sprite, etc.

Grew up in the northeast and called it soda.
I've lived in Texas for nearly 27 years and have always heard it called soda here as well.
I lived in Florida for several years and it was a mix of soda and Coke. I worked in a restaurant during some of that time and I eventually learned to get clarification if someone ordered "A Coke." I remember one guy getting snippy because I didn't ask him "what flavor"... since he ordered a Coke but wanted Sprite.

I miss Pepsi’s lemon lime soda called Teem. I think it was discontinued in the mid 1980s and replaced with lemon lime brand Slice. Slice also came in other flavors. Then Sierra Mist and now Starry.

Personally, I say both soda and pop. IF I want a real Coke, I ask for a diet Coke. I think almost all servers here will tell you if they serve Pepsi or Coke.

I’ve always called carbonated soft drinks “soda,” although everybody also recognized “pop.”

I never actually heard someone refer to all soft drinks as “Coke,” even when in the south. They called it whatever particular variety they wanted, like Diet Pepsi or Orange Crush.
