Coffee - Pressed Pot Help

I loved the press pot coffee we got at the Kona Cafe. The kids decided to buy me one for Christmas. The lady at the store told them it was ok to use regular coffee (rather than the coarse ground the instructions call for). I used regular coffee in the pot and it was really good. I can't get all of the grounds out of the pot afterwards. Is there a secret to this? Also the press part (don't know what else to call it) doesn't go all the way down to squeeze the rest of the coffee out. Is it supposed to be like that?

I don't know about the workings, but DH has one. He buys coffee at coarse grinds it just to use in the pot. Are the grinds caught in the mesh thing?

My plunger does not go all the way down. I just swish some water in it to clean out the last of the grounds.

The coffee doesn't get caught in the mesh thing which is good. I don't know if it is ok just to pour the grounds down the drain I'm afraid it will clog the sink.

I love my French press , or as the French call it, cafetiere. Here is a good explination on how to use it:

When I lived in England, this is all I used and now I have one here at homw and love to break it out once in a while.

Thank you for the link the article was very informative. Its hard to believe how good the coffee is even using regular coffee.
