Hi, has anyone experienced the Virgin Atlantic Gluten Free meal.

My 2 year old daughter is a coeliac and Virgin arent able to tell me what the meal may be only what it wont have in it. I dont need a full breakdown only an idea such as its chicken casserole but they cant tell me.

We would really like to know before we go what it might be, so if anyone has had it and could give me more info that would be great.

thanks

When I have flown with Virgin and ordered an "Special needs" meal it was always pot luck as to what I got, I never had a choice.

If you have ordered through special needs your meal will be brought to you first before they start serving everyone elses, I've never seen anyone get a choice.

Several times they forgot to load my meal and I would either be allowed to have something of the upper class menu or if there was nothing on it that was safe then I even ended up have a cabin crew meal!!!!

In the end I would pack my own food so that I knew I would have something to eat.

Okay, I am going to try as best as I can to give you the facts and hope that my tone isn't too harsh on this one.

I flew with DD(7) in April with Virgin from Manchester. I booked GF meal with our original booking and phoned in to confirm a week before departure. It didn't say anything on the tickets so I panicked (you will understand this) and called again. They assured me my request had been noted.

When the food came around on the flight I was surpised when they came and asked what she wanted. The short story, there was no GF meal loaded on the flght. I had to explain that there was no way I could take a chance. The last thing we needed was an allergic reaction to start our stay at Disney ....! They were very nice and brought her fruit and yogurt but the poor child had been up for seven hours before we took off (we had to fly down from Edinburgh to get our Virgin flight) and fruit and yogurt hardly stave off hunger pangs. About three hours into the flights both of us were in tears. I felt guilty about eating a meal when she wasn't getting anything.

We did contact them in Orlando and they noted it for the return flight and guess what .....same thing happened. But this time I had packed some extra things in my hand luggage. Again, I can't say enough for the flight crew. To say our stewardess went out of her way is an understatement.

Don't get me wrong, I love Virgin and we are using them again on our next trip. Also, they responded immediately to my email on my return and I had someone personally dealing with my complaint and she was constantly in touch with me so it was really personal service. They also sent my daugher a £20 voucher and a card apologising to her personally. I think this is extreme fluke and unlikely to happen again, but to be on the safe side, rather pack some stuff that you can take through security just in case. I would imagine, like me, that you take a good stash of dietry special dry stock in the hold luggage anyway (I did, but could't reach it there..... silly me).

In regards to the GF meal itself, some of my family members have had it and said it is really good food. They are of the view that their meals looked better than those of the other passengers. So please don't take this as a criticism of the airline - it is more of a caution to just do as you probably usually do and have some back up stock.

Next time I am taking a couple of GF sandwiches. If they don't get eaten I think you have to leave them on the plane as you can't take meat, cheese, etc into the US, but I am happy to part with them if need be, just for the sake of peace of mind.

You don't say when you leave. I am keen to hear how it goes.

My dd was 2 1/2 when we flew this year !! She had chicken and rice a yoghurt some fantastic cakes and I think sweets and sultanas.
Her meal was far better than ours and she loved it !!
they even did her a gluten free roll - i think it was ham and cheese :confused3
Everyone around us commented on how much nicer dd food was !!! My only critism would be that there was loads of food for a toddler it was adult sized because there is no chld option if you ask for a special meal but thats not really that bad is it ???
Hope that helps a little x

Thank you for your replies, we leave on November 13th :)
and I plan to take plenty of her favourite food things that we plan to leave onboard if she doesnt eat them during the flight.
The tricky thing for her is her big brother and twin sister will obviously be having the kids meals and I wanted to prepare her for what she may be having rather than missing out on.

we have done lots of planning with Brenda Bennetts help for eating in Orlando I am hoping she can have a good holiday without any hiccups with food.

thanks again

Hi

I cannot comment of GF food but my DD has a dairy allergy, and I can honestly say that the food she has been given on Virgin has been awful.

Lastime the flight attendant brought her food and took the lid off for her and she was nearly sick!! - they had sent her somekind of vegi curry - she was 7 !!!

They said they would alter her meal for the return journey to plain chicken, and it came covered with a sauce!!

I can only recommend that you take lots of food that you know that you can eat and don't rely on being given anything by the airline, then if you get anything thats edible, it's a bonusxxx
