Cm's suppose to stop group chanting

I was given a CM publication about the tour groups and nowhere does it say to stop them chanting or singing. In fact, it says to "respond with enthusiasm," if I remember the wording correctly.

As a former CM, I NEVER heard that. The 2 finger point and smile is a rule.. but telling guests to stop chanting.. nope!

Just received a call from Disney today and found out cm's are suppose to be stopping any group from chanting. This has been a huge complaint issue for a while and if chanting or shouting is occurring, any cm is suppose to walk up to the group leader and ask them to stop.
Great info. But even better quote with your name...lol

I do. A group of 50 is meaningless compared to the thousands of people who attend the park every day and are being offended by the chanting. They aren't going to get pissed off and never come back because they can't chant.

Ummm... it's not just 50 people. It's 50Xn where n approaches infinity. Ok, that may be an exaggeration, but it's a lot of people every day, several months of the year. That equals a LOT of money in Disney's coffers. Disney will not discourage these tour groups in any way. They represent too much revenue. Disney has had YEARS to do something about it if they were inclined and have done nothing. Zilch, zero, nada.

Well unless they are lying to the OP and at least one other poster, DISNEY has already taken steps to offend them.

Or, more likely, they have taken steps to placate the person who complained with an e-mail saying that they are "trying" to do something about the problem.

You pit 50 cheerleaders from Tennessee against 50 from Alabama and they are all in line together for RnR, a friendly rivalry will break out and soon you have 100 loud girls chanting and singing. It amazes me that this is so off-putting to some. I really do get a sense of cultural bias bleeding through here.

What's the cultural bias you're seeing? You think people are irritated if the chanting is in a language not understood vs understood? You think people wouldn't be irritated by cheerleaders from the U.S.? I sure would!!!

I have no clue what TN and AlBama have to do with anything, but I don't want ANY groups chanting and screaming (unless there's an Indominus Rex on the way), no matter what language.

They were chanting yesterday so ... BUT a group did get severely reprimanded on Space Mountain. I never heard a CM speak with that much force. He was angry but they were being unsafe. I was very impressed!

Unsafe...so it wasn't the chanting that cause the reprimand but other behavior?

I stayed at PC in July (16 and 17) ... lots of tour groups at the resort, parks and DTD. First night there was a group of people sitting on a wall below my room (I was on the 4th floor) ... they were SOOOOO loud ... worst yet was the gal that kept shrieking with laughter. Exhausted and wanting/needing to get to sleep, I called the front desk and complained (it was 1:15AM), CM said she'd send security out and they must have come b/c the group quieted down shortly thereafter. The next night they were back out there at midnight, but they kept the noise down to a bearable level.

Next trip I'm going to ask to be put back in the 50's or 60's section ... it much quieter at that end of the resort.

I also found it annoying that the tour groups would fill the entire sidewalk at the resort and run you over if you didn't step off the walks and out of their way.
A cup of water would have gotten rid of them.

Isn't being enforced-never has been, never will be-at least not in July and January-the number of Guests chanting/singing/clapping then is just STAGGERING-too many to realistically hope to stop.

JMHO!!!!

Maybe Disney could offer other Guests a discount in July and January-"Fifteen % For The Fifteens"!!!!lol:)

Actually they WERE banned for a time in late '80's to early '90's-then the good ole first Gulf war brought overseas tourism to a screeching halt-and the big tour groups were allowed back in. I was on a CP during the first Gulf war and the regular CM's were dismayed that Disney allowed the groups back in-but the parks were DEAD without them-no OT, no 40+ hour weeks etc. My guess (hope??!) is that if tourism dollars are up again then Disney will get serious about corralling behavior. 'Course they are more noticeable now with EPCOT a shell of its former self and DHS basically dead in the water until Star Wars and Pixarland get up and running-harder to spread out very large tour groups...

Sounds like you may be the parent of someone on a cheer squad. If you are literally amazed that some people would find "100 loud girls chanting and singing" to be "off-putting" then there is no common frame of reference within which to have a discussion -- I find it equally amazing that anyone could fail to understand how that is off-putting.
No, I am not a parent of a child in a cheer group. Not even close. But I've been to my share of Yankees/Red Sox games and Steelers/Browns games to know that 100 people cheering at the same time is not reason for concern. It's called enthusiasm. I embrace it. Go to a football (European) game in Liverpool or Manchester some time and see what it is all about. Not everyone has fun in the same manner. I am not bold enough to think or suggest that "my way is the right way" or that "my way is the only way."

I'm confused. Why would they need Portuguese speaking CMs?
I know. Right? And above I was accused of seeing cultural bias where none apparently exists. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Well, all I can say is that if what you say is true, we would never see complaints about people being placed amid Pop Warner groups, bands and large tour groups. But we do see those complaints. So it is either very easy to do what you say and Disney isn't doing it, or it isn't as easy to do what you say. One of my brothers managed a hotel at WDW for 12 years. I have a pretty good source of how bookings and blockings work.

I've managed a hotel. It was an extended stay property, which meant 60% of our property were long-term guests, and the other 40% were made up of business travellers thru the week and little kid sports teams or other groups on the weekends. It's very, very easy to block group rooms in advance and keep them all together and away from other guests as much as possible - I did it daily. It just takes a little work juggling things around, and that is on the individual cast members at the hotel level. Not Disney corporate. And to the argument about "no hotel is going to want empty rooms just to keep a group together" - well, yes and no. If the hotel is going to have empty rooms if they keep the group together, then they are going to have empty rooms if they don't. It's just a matter of strategically keeping those empty rooms confined to one area rather than spread out around the property because they let the system assign the rooms instead of the actual cast member at the desk.

I just find this really weird. I was at Universal with a very, very large Brazilian Tour Group in the parks every day I was and there were nothing but polite. No chanting, no loud talking, no running you over. In fact getting behind the group in line often meant you got waved through to the head of the group.

I cannot lie and say I am not worried about Pop Warner in December (I am at Pop the first 2 days of it) but if it becomes an issue I am sure Disney would try to accommodate. I just plan on bring noise cancelling headphones and ear plugs.

I'm sure I read on the DIS that the chanting tour groups share no common identifying characteristic.

The groups I encountered most of the kids speak Portuguese and don't speak English. i stopped a girl one time because she dropped an item and I wanted to hand it back to her. She immediately said "no English" when I spoke to her and tried to brush me off. It wasn't until she saw I had her item (can't remember what it was now), that she stop long enough to grab it from me.

Anyhow Disney needs CMs that speak Portuguese so they can communicate with these kids.

Thanks for that info.:)

In talking with the Super Greeters,I think the crux of the "problem" is that the SATGs do not see "chantsingclapping" as a "behavior" issue-in their minds thy are not doing it to exhibit "bad behavior",it is part of their culture and they feel they should be allowed to "express" this part of their culture.

So,I can see Disney "upping" efforts to curtail chantsingclapping in "confined spaces",but will they ever try to COMPLETELY eliminate it?Not going to happen.:)

I find it surprising that all the Super Greeters are Brazilian-they need SGs from Argentina as well-the Brazil SGs have a very tough time "interacting" with the Argentina girls.

We don't often agree, but on this, I'm with you. This thread is no different than the one that was closed just a few days ago.

Are these experiences from this year? I admit it was a few weeks ago but when I asked my daughter about these groups a few weeks ago she said she had only seen one group and they were well behaved.

Seriously though it does not matter how quiet a group is any large group is going to seem disruptive in a value hotel. At their scheduled meal time they come in backpacks cover the majority of the tables making it difficult to find a place to sit.

That type of behavior is unacceptable and unsafe. I hope you wrote a formal complaint to Disney guest relations. Just awful.
