Clueless on iPod Touch

So if the 4th generation can upgrade to the new OS, then there really isn't much difference between the 4th and 5th?

Don't quote me on that, as I have a very bad sinus headache. :confused3

I tried a search to see the differences, and I can't find much.

Still not sure if the 4th gen can upgrade, as I thought I heard that on the announcement day, but again, I'm not sure?

Sorry, Tiger

I swear I saw something like that as well. Maybe it was on the apple website. Thanks and hope your headache gets better. Dealt with sinus last week and it's not fun!!!!

I would definately get the bigger one. I have a 32gb and I still have to switch things on and off. I would consider it to be worth the wait to save up for the bigger one, then to spend so much on the 8gb and decide you now want the 32.

Yes it will have a new OS but the 4th should be able to be upgraded. There really are no features on the 5th gen that makes it better to buy over the 4th gen.

That's what I thought, but I couldn't find out for sure if the 4th gens were upgradeable.

For us, the new ones are actually cheaper, as my hubby gets an Apple corporate discount, and so since the new ones came out at a lower pricepoint, we save some dough with buying the new ones.

Thanks, Tiger :)

Gotta love Apple's business plan of charging $100 difference between the memory amounts and not allowing the customer to just put a $10 SD card in to increase the memory..... $100 is a bit much for an extra 24gb.

I guess you should buy one of the other touchpads that maybe does ... it is an open market here.

Check Amazon as well. A new 32 gb black is actually less than a refurbished on the Apple site. Also, the white is $299 but since there is no tax and free shipping if you pay tax when ordering from Apple it is a better deal.

Or wait a few days and use the cloud for 5 gigs of free storage. If you want more you pay more.

IMO the larger storage devices are a waste of money, the typical pre or actual teen user will never need to have 3 HD movies or 20 TV shows or 20,000 songs at a time loaded on the device. The running out of room is a function of not utilizing the PC itunes is loaded on. Docking and syncing are something that is recommended with the devices to keep them performing correctly. My kid has a first gen 8 gig hand me down and can acsess 60 gigs of apropiete content without the need for it all to be on the device at 1 time. She has her own 4th gen but that was to upgrade to a device with a camera, but there was no need to get something that would hold her entire library.

What it comes down to is convenience, if you want to use it and just keep loading stuff on it and never sync, pay for the extra storage, if you want to be frugal buy the smaller device and learn to use it.

Oh no, now I'm back to thinking about the 8G again! ;) It is a lot I think to have a $100 difference for 8G to 32G. Why can't there be a 16G??? I need to look into this Cloud thing, but I assume it's just like iTunes for the iPod.

I agree this would be the case for most users, but heavy users will want a bigger Touch. I'm thinking of some of my students, as they have them loaded up with stuff they use constantly, so even using Cloud wouldn't be enough for them. For us though, the kids will get 8gbs.

On a related note, hubby's Touch is 32gbs. I checked how much we've used and we've only used almost 9gbs - there are thousands of photos on there (I have several digitals that are 14mbs photos, so very large files), several movies, songs and tons of apps.

We are definitely getting 8gbs for our kids, and will use Cloud as well. Cloud is going to be Apple's storage system. Click on the link I provided above, and it explains Cloud.

There used to be a 16gbs Touch, but I'm thinking it wasn't a big seller, and that is why they dropped it?

Good luck with your iPod shopping! Tiger :)

We got my daughter (11yo) an 8gb last year for Christmas. She uses it everyday, but has to dump some stuff to add others. She has those pictures that all the teens seem to be doing in the mirror and at arms length etc. If she would eliminate those, she would be fine..:sad2: I played with it so much that my husband bought me one for my birthday and it's a 32gb. Perfect! screen protectors and a GOOD case are a must though.

Can you recommend a case? I bought one for DS12 and I wasn't sure what type of case to get him.

We are more than likely getting an Otterbox Defender for our kids' iPods.

Interested to see if there is anything else like it.

Tiger

:goodvibes I should not have read this thread lol now Im confused on what to buy!! Prior to this thread I was FORSURE just buying the 4th generation 8gb Touch..... NOW Im wondering if I should move the kids(DD9 and DD7) up to 32gb...... and if we need the NEW 5th generation coming out tomorrow :upsidedow

Our DD (11) has a cell phone (more for us than her) and an Ipod shuffle. Am I correct that all her music would now go on the Ipod Touch and from Itunes she could download movies and games?

She wants one but I want to know all it can do first.

Thanks - Diane:)

Right.. it can hold all her music, plus there's tons of apps (games, educational, etc) through itunes that you can download to it. And it will hold movies as well, at least up to the memory capacity. And if you have netflix, it will stream movies/shows as well, as long as you're in a wifi zone.

And the newer generation one (4th gen), has a camera, so it can take pictures as well as HD video... and can also use Facetime (i think that's what it's called), where if you have a friend/family member with another Touch/Ipad/Apple computer, can video chat with them.

I have one, and dd's are always "stealing" it from me, so I'm getting older dd her own.. I'm upgrading mine to the 4th gen (I have a 2nd gen), and I'm giving the 2nd gen. one to younger dd.

:goodvibes I am going to stay tuned to see what the opinions are for the 8gb =) I have the 3G Touch 32gb with TONS of movies, music, tv shows, audiobooks, pics, and apps downloaded believe I was at close to 20gb used. My iTunes library is filled with stuff that my DDs can use but the price difference is really making this hard.

My DD11 got an 8g last Christmas and it has been enough. I was worried that the 8g would not be enough, but so far she has music and tons of apps on it and it has held with no problems. I was worried because it will not hold many movies, but DD has not downloaded any movies. She does watch a lot of Utube stuff. I guess it depends on what they want to use it for. My DD uses it most for games and it has been enough memory.
