Clueless guest comments at WDW

We just had a great summer trip to DC...Since you are a planner, I am sure you know you can write ahead for tickets for the Washington Monument, Treasury Dept, Congress...etc.

FYI...If you do not write ahead, you must wait in very long lines on the day you plan to attend, with no guarantee of tickets.

T&B, that is so funny! We went to DC this summer, and every time my kids saw the Washington Monument, they called it the Giant Pencil. They know what its called, but they giggle and call it the Giant Pencil anyway.

Wow thanks, I did not know this as I just got the OK, DoK from DH. We are going late April 2005. So far I have checked out the zoo and our hotel but haven't done anything else. If you have any websites you can point me to I would sooo appreciated it. Sorry to be OT - clueless and blushing! (on DC not WDW)

The funniest comment I ever heard was one my son made. We had just moved to Central Florida. Of course, we got annual passes and went to Epcot all the time. World showcase was his favorite. One day at Tae Kwon Do one of the college kids was explaining to my son, who was 6 years old at the time, that he was going to Mexico for a semester. He asked ds if he knows where Mexico is. My son said, "Sure, it's right beside Norway!" The college kid was puzzled and I was in stitches laughing.

Next time you're in DC point out the color change on the monument. It's really from when construction stopped at some point and then restarted and the new stone was a little different color. But what I tell people (and my sister fell for this hook, line, and sinker recently--the sister who has traveled all over the world, just returned from China, went on an African safari last year, is going to Egypt next year, etc, etc...--is that there was a great flood years ago and that is the water line.

My 4yo (at the time) was the source of a good one last trip (his first). As we are coming up the highway to Epcot on a DW bus, he spies Spaceship Earth and announces "Hey, its the hockey ball at Apricot!!!"
The whole bus just cracked up.

Also, we were at the snowglobe parade at MK and the last float had cleared the bend by the Hall of Presidents, the cms were removing the ropes, people are gathering up there belongings and walking away, and some lady walks up and says to her husband "Oh, I think the parade is getting ready to start."

[I still can't get over the post about the lady that only rode 2 rides over a 5 day trip because she couldn't find any!
My 10yodd said "Didn't she see the carousel right next to Dumbo? And all the other rides past it? If she had just walked a few more feet.....argh." Sigh, she takes after her mama. LOL]

That's a nice time to be in DC! Since you'll be past the Easter break time it shouldn't be too crowded, either. If you have any questions about the area, ask away, but leep in mind I've been to Orlando (WDW and Universal) more in the last several years that to DC, even though DC is less than an hour away. Pathetic!

Since everyone got a kick out of my co-worker only riding two rides while at the Magic Kingdom on her five-day trip to WDW, here's another classic quote from her about the trip:

"Yeah, we rode that safari jeep thing at the Animal Kingdom. Well, when we came to that old rickety bridge, I was really scared. Does it do that all of the time?

When I answered that it did and that was just a part of the "ride", she then said, "Oh wow! I thought it was really broken... you know because of all those hurricanes!?"

Dear Lord, this woman is not only clueless, but gullible as well!

I'm going to retype something that I wrote in another message showing that you don't have to wait in line at the "big pencil".

Years ago (BC--before children) my DH and I were in Washington DC. We walked up to the Washington Monument and walked right on the elevator going to the top. We had a good time looking around and when we returned back down and walked out we realized that we'd just bypassed a very long line, probably an hour long, that was wound around the monument. When we walked up we did it with such purpose that we appeared to be with the group that was going up the elevator at that time.

See, you just have to know how to do it! Whenever we're in DC we remember and laugh about that long line that we avoided.

I helped plan a vacation for a first-timer whose husband had recently undergone heart surgery. She was concerned that he wouldn't enjoy himself because he usually likes wild rides & wouldn't be able to go on them because of his recent operation. I made her a list of all of the rides that have restrictions for heart patients & explained that there are plenty of other rides that they could go on. Guess what? When she got back she said they hated Disney because they couldn't ride any ride. She claimed that ALL of the rides had health warning signs. They rode nothing.

I personally have been to Disney 8 times in my 17 years of living, and my parents have been twice as many times. Last time we went, Fantasmic was sort of "new", cause we'd never heard of it.

I'd only think that guest to be an idiot if they said something along the lines of "what is star tours?"

I know, that sounds so mean! I understand if you are not a Disney addict like all of us here on the DIS, but come on!

Wow, I can't believe that this happened to someone else as well. I had talked a co-worker into a vacation at WDW and gave them books and video's, the whole nine yards. Upon their return I asked them how it went and got the same reply as you. The only rides they knew about were the "out in the open" ones that are mostly for kids. They never went in any show buildings because they thought they were nothing but gift shops. I laughed until I cried. What a bunch of Bozo's! I can understand not planning, heck I hardly ever plan but to not at least venture into one by accident is mind boggling to me.

Another instance happened just this spring. I was talking with a friend of my parents. He was retired and wintered in Winter Haven. We were talking about going to WDW and Epcot in particular. He told me that he didn't like Epcot since they took out the skylift attraction. I asked him to describe this. He told me about something that I remember from Seaworld. It has been years since I have gone to Seaworld so I can't really remember the name of it but this guy insisted that it used to be in Epcot. I tried to tell him tactfully that it was at Seaworld and his comment was "Why would they have moved it over to that place, Epcot just isn't the same without it."

I guess that our memory sometimes plays little tricks on us. I always thought I remembered the Tea Cup ride being right up next to Small World. I was informed otherwise, and I accept that but for the life of me I can see it in my minds eye, right next to Small World.

My BIL had always been very anti-Disney but is now looking forward to our Family reunion. It will be his first time & my nephews' 1st time (and my sister's 1st time since we spent a week for just the 2 of us 20 years ago) - his only plan is to go whereever I tell him too! Now I'm panicked because they are arriving a day & a half ahead of us - and I want to be with them the first time they step onto Main Street.

My son has been twice and is helping me plan everything. My sister was amazed when he told his cousins about his 2 favorite rides (Buzz and the Tiki birds) and then started to say that we're not going to do them together because they're too far apart so we'll do Buzz and then Space Mt & Stitch and the Tiki birds and POC, etc.... The kid has the Disney genes!

You have to admit it's fun to see people who are there for the first time. We always see the Indy show several times on our trips, my DS just loves the special effects. We have always managed to sit by people who have never seen it. They always make comments about the "audience member" (I'll try not to spoil it for those who haven't seen it) and other effects.
We enjoy it just as much as ever, but that "first time" surprise is gone.

POR is Dixie Landings...what else? Why did they change the Tiki Birds show? Oh, and I did not know what Fantasmic was - had missed a couple of yrs, it opened and I had no idea.

and for so many funny comments that I've also heard many, many times in the Parks or from friends and family who are not as much WDW lovers as the rest of us But sometimes there are precious moments as well..hearing a child's (or adults's) reaction the first time they walk up main street, or see a character they love...heartwarmers every time

I just had to add my story. My cousin went to WDW last year with her DH, DS and DD. They did not realize there was more than just the MK. She said they had a terrible trip and that her DH did not want to wait in line for just the few rides there were. When I started questioning her on what they rode she looked at me like I was crazy......Her comment about Fantasyland and I quote...."You mean there were rides in all those little buildings." I could not believe it!!!! I felt so sorry for them and so happy for myself that I know all the best places (the DIS) to find out ANYTHING I need to know as I do my (somewhat) obsessive planning! Thanks everyone!

We were at AK this past weekend. We were seated next to an older couple on the Kilimajaro Safari. The wife asks the husband "are you getting pictures of the animals?". The husband replies "Yep. I just don't know how good they'll come out. I wish they would do something about fixing these roads!"
