I feel pretty fortunate in that I only had to have silver for one year before I was able to upgrade to gold last summer when my renewal window opened. I definitely treated it like race registration and was on and refreshing my profile page every few seconds.
When we were in line waiting for early access to runDisney merch at this year's marathon weekend, I mentioned I would like to upgrade to platinum. Other gold members in line around me scoffed. All three said they have been trying to upgrade to platinum for a few years without success and that platinum spots tend to not open up. Still, I will hope for the best.
The benefits for gold are great, but runDisney is serious about enforcing the rules. Only the card holder gets early access to runDisney merch at the expo, not a spouse/partner or anyone else. And you can only sign yourself up for the guaranteed event. We were online yesterday morning desperately trying to get my wife a spot in any of the 2027 marathon weekend events.
All that being said, I will keep my gold status as long as I am physically able to continue participating in these events. Avoiding registration frustration for at least one weekend is very much worth the price.
