Clotted Cream Question

Hello All!!!
I hope you don't mind a non-UKer posting here. But I need some help here. We were watching Passport to Europe, while they were in Cornwall they ate clotted cream. Being the untravelled American that I am I did not know what this was. Is it like Butter, or more like sour cream? I know this is a weird question, but I yearn for knowledge!!

Here's the entry in Wikipedia for clotted cream . Haven't had it myself, but it sounds like quite the artery-clogger (minimum fat content of 55%)...

It may be an artery clogger but it sure is nice on scones and jam, some places put it on top of ice cream as well. Tastes best when on holiday in the south west and if its only when you are on holiday you have to have a Devon/Cornish cream tea.

I Agree with Wendy but I must admit we will have a cream tea at home during the summer as a treat.

The Wikipedia entry is a pretty good description. It's basically very, very thick cream which forms a crust on the top. The flavour is closer to unsalted butter; it's not like sour cream in taste at all. Serving it with scones (a bit like your biscuits) and strawberry jam is a British classic. I like it with hevva buns, another Cornish delicacy, making sure I get some of the 'crust'. Where's a lip licking smilie when you need one?

I've got a pot of clotted cream sitting in my fridge at this very minute My mum has just come back from visiting my brother in Devon, and she always gets us some clotted cream when she's there.

I think I detect an urgent need for some scone-baking this afternoon

Scones may look like biscuits but are NOTHING like them to taste or in consistency. Just a little pointer!

we do have scones here in the states. mmmm...scones. I've never had clotted cream but had assumed its more like cream cheese. if its really more like unsalted butter than cream cheese, I'll definitely have to try it someday. the pictures are wonderful.

Clotted cream is definately best in Devon and is very very very sweet.

Did a DVC exchange to Devon back in February and had a great cream tea.

Devon fudge is great too.

Thanks for all your replies!!! Now I need to plan a trip to the UK!!! I LOVE butter...of course my Doctor doesn't appreciate my love But, Hey as long as I take my cholesterol pill and only splurge once in a while......

Sorry, another Yank popping in here! Clotted cream on scones was always a favorite when DH and I would travel to the UK (prior to DS being born...10 years ago!!!). I just wanted to say that it is nothing at all like cream cheese, not even the whipped variety. Imagine fresh dairy whipped cream--not ReadiWhip, but the real thing. Now picture that same flavor intensified with a thicker texture.

I just wish we had it here! Hmm, on second thought, since I'm trying to drop a few pounds, maybe not!

Just adding that CORNISH clotted cream is the best! of course I'm biased. If you didn't know you make it by putting a huge shallow tray of very creamy fresh cows milk on top of the aga. as the cream rises and warms it gets crusty on top.
