I apologize if there's already a thread on this but I'm having trouble finding any info. My DH and I are considering buying while we are there next week. We would buy directly through Disney. We are curious how long after signing the paperwork are we a) able to close b) are we eligible for the perks such as buying DVC AP's? I know you get a membership number and what not but is there a lag in perks? and c) can we "upgrade" to the DVC passes like you can from a park hopper to AP? Thanks so much :)

Since you are paying a premium price, I would expect premium service. Let your guide know what you want before signing, they want to close the sale.

Our current plan is to buy APs our first day there but obviously if we could use our DVC membership to buy the Gold APs we would much rather do that. It is the biggest appeal for it since it would save it so much money ever year. Wasn't sure if this was a normal occurrence.

You can buy now over the phone and your account will be set up when you get there.

I don't remember there being any wait to close through Disney, but we paid cash, and that may have changed the calculus a bit. My understanding is that we were members with full benefits immediately, but I may be mis-remembering that.

I was amazed how quick it was all processed it was great! We also paid cash. Deal went through DVC members then and there. Def wait and get the gold pass!

Awesome, thanks so much!! Now, I'm just hoping they will agree to give us SSR!
If you're looking for anything other than Poly or Aulani direct then you should probably expect to wait. I would call and speak to a guide over the phone and find out if they actually have SSR points available or if you will be put on a waiting list. A couple resorts, BCV and VGF in particular have very long waitlists. I'm sure it will also depend somewhat on how many points you want as well. As disneynutz said, you can complete the entire thing over the phone. When I bought my PVB points I had my membership number and completed booking my first stay on points about 4 hours after I had first called.

They might place you on a wait list but it's worth waiting for. We are proud owners at SSR and VGF. We wanted a SSR add on last year. They did not have the points and UY the day we went in but one week later it came up! Same use year as ours that's what we were waiting for. It's a fab resort. Near Disney Springs, not high maintenance fees. Plenty of room at 11 months and 7 ( unless it Christmas! ) .

I bet they have some SSR inventory, but keep in mind that you're paying $50/point more than if you buy resale. On a 100 point contract, that's $5,000. Are the perks really worth that much to you?

Considering we buy APs every year and that alone is a 400$ savings per year, it does really add up for us. Over the life of the contract at 400$ savings per year, we would save close to 17,000.

How many points are you planning to purchase? My advice is to purchase most of what you want via resale, and then add a 25 point contract direct.

Or, if you're in a hurry, buy a 50 point contract direct, and then add on via resale.

A smaller number of points is more likely to be available immediately direct.

Sounds like you did your homework, we also brought direct and like you glad we did. Resale is cheaper but sooner than later you will be getting what you pay for.

That's if the AP discount continues, do you vacation at WDW enough to make an AP worth buying? If you are there that many days how many DVC points do you need to book your rooms?

You understand that the AP discount, like all other "perks," is NOT guaranteed to anyone and could go away at any time...right?

We usually do 2 trips a year. The APs have come in handy in the years we've done even 3 trips.

Yes. I am well aware of that. But I would rather have the option for it than not.

One thing about the wait list is that it's important to get on that list if you want something. Then, if they don't have what you're looking for available immediately, they can search it out and get it for you via their ROFR queue.

We were able to get SSR and do it over the phone! :)
