well, sorry, but speaking of whining, how many times we gonna rehash this? Sounds a lot like we aren't playing by your rules, so you're going to take your marbles and go home.

You got that right -teejay! LOL!;)

Bob, you asked a question on closed threads, one I have seen asked several times by you in the past.

Speaking only for myself, I think I have asked for one thread to be closed during the time since not being a moderator here on the CB. That was less than a month ago.

I made one post, expressing a personal viewpoint of mine regarding a news item. The thread was subsequently taken over by a poster for a personal agenda, in a very arrogant and demeaning manner. It was sad to see many posters beaten up on over a two day period in such a focused, self-serving manner. I left the thread alone, having only posted the original statement of my personal opinion, choosing to not defend it in any way whatsoever. I was only making a statement, not an opening salvo for a debate. Had I wished to debate, which I did not, I would have posted it on the Debate Board, better suited to those types of discussions. Discussion is fine on the CB, I do not think arrogant, self-serving, hurtfulness is, JMO.

Only after several female posters were degradingly and demeaningly talked down too, in a very derogatory manner, in essence saying they were no better than the street trash or scum that this this particular poster may appreciate, I asked for the thread to be closed, and it was. Closed, not for the arrogant stand of agenda promotion that a poster, making almost 20% of the over 100 replies on the thread, but rather I refused to be an adjunct to a platform for a 'person' to demean and degrade women here on the DIS. I have my morals. If some others don't, that is fine, not mine to tell them to. But something I post won't be used to further their self-serving and self-centered debauchery, if I have a say in it. As Pete has it, I do have a say, and I asked for it to be closed.

Do what I do.... post on uncensored and unmoderated disney discussion boards. :)

Wow, I'm learning a lot about people's motivations on this thread so I appreciate BobO bringing this subject up again. I don't recall seeing people who were affected in one way or another by the threads in question actually stating their viewpoints in this manner. It appears to me that the original poster is actually expressing a viewpoint of sorts by asking that their thread be closed and that doesn't bother me personally anywhere besides the Debate Board. I dislike insults and name-calling but closing threads there seems to defeat the whole presumed purpose of that board.

Anyway, this is interesting and please carry on.

It's very nice of you to provide an explanation Dan. :D Not necessary either, since closing a thread is something that the management has said is perfectly 'legal' to do.

It just so happened that we did have a Death Penalty thread going on at the same time, maybe more than one, with some very good arguments put forth from members on opposing sides of the issue. I don't think any were of the demeaning and accusatory nature that was evident on the CB thread. It's not necessary. Most people are interested in actual discussions and debates. They just don't work if one or two people are continually hammering on the same point with no acknowledgement of other's opinions, to the point of becoming insulting and offensive. This is what gets threads closed. If you really want to continue the discussion, don't become offensive. Simple.

I thought it was more then that, but I will go along with your estimate Teejay. It must just seem like the 20th time this thread has been started by Bob O.:D

Eros quote:
Let's say that a female member posts that she is FURIOUS with her husband, who just sustained an inguinal hernia necessitating surgery after lifting a heavy trunk. Why is she furious???? Because, she had always warned him about avoiding such lifting following prior hernias. She states that she feels like smashing him in the mouth .

A nice "vent"????? Maybe. However, she may receive some responses which would urge her to show him a little more empathy or compassion. Should she then be "entitled" to close the thread because others aren't agreeing with her wrath?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is when you PASS OVER the thread because you REALLY DON'T have to comment on EVERYTHING you may not think is right.
PM Bob O and have a ball, but it is totally uneccessary to blast the OP. She wasn't asking for your opinions about how to treat her husband.
There should be a banner at the top of the Community Board stating: IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY, PLEASE DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL. I learned that in Kindergarten, and it's pretty good advice in most situations.
Now, if it were on the DEBATE board, (which I notice you have never graced with your presence) then it would be okay to say exactly what's on your mind. Why don't you ever go to the debate board Eros??? It's much more loose there and a thread rarely gets closed. I don't get it. I rarely see Bob O post there either. Maybe it's just a little TOO CONTROVERSIAL for you two? Or maybe you wouldn't have anything to complain about anymore. Interesting.
For the record, I personally would not close a thread of mine if people disagreed with what I said. But if other people want to, so what? Big whoop, move on.
Deja-vu!
I deleted all my posts from a debate thread I originated, recently. I continued to watch as many posts, that I felt were personal attacks, were allowed to remain.I then requested that the thread be deleted,it wasn't, so i requested it be locked.
As far as the soccor thread that this is referring to-I do feel many posters WERE "bashing" the original poster...it felt like the "mean and nasty" Debate Board rather than the kind and gentle CB.
Thanks, Lucky4me:) :) . In keeping with your admonition:"IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY, PLEASE DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL", I have the following response to the posts from yourself and DAN:
