Closed threads???

Alex, some posters feel that ANY disagreement with their views represents a personal attack    .

Of course, the way for us to avoid any requests for thread closures is to ALWAYS AGREE WITH THE THREAD INITIATOR!!!! ................ I label this phenomenon, DIS SPEAK . If we all avoid offering any criticism or opposing viewpoints, then everyone here will always have A DISNEY DAY :jester: :jester: .......

Opposing viewpoints I can stomache-posts rife with malice, scorn and condescension might prompt me to-well, not lock a thread- but at least, look away.

well Doc, I think there is a world of difference between standing up for your beliefs and looking at a post and realizing the poster is just venting....
I am certainly not suggesting that you suppress things you feel strongly about but is it that hard to look at a post and think "wow that person is just hurt"

A) If someone is "venting" about a person who doesn't deserve it, I will defend them. Usually, the person isn't on these boards, and it would be wrong to perpetuate the idea that this person is a "bad guy."

B) A person may be hurt, but that doesn't mean they can bash someone who doesn't deserve it, NOR does it mean that their kid isn't going to learn how to be a whiner because of it.

BTW, I didn't post on the original thread. I don't even know if (A) is true, but it looks like some of the "attackers" here (who have some experience in that area) do believe that. I'm just stating it as a generalization, not specifically about this instance.

And if a person IS hurt, in the slight chance that they are an open-minded person, perhaps it will help them to see the opposing viewpoint.

well Doc... I am speaking in generalities, you are taking about one particular incident.
If the person isn't on this board.. then we really don't know whether they deserve it or not do we?
Are you telling me you never grumble to your friends about your boss or something?

That's GREAT news Eros! I am SURE that everyone on the boards will be thrilled to hear your new policy is to always agree with the original poster! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Gosh this will turn into such a nice place :) :p

I agree, lilboo.

I'm not sure which thread we are talking about here, but in my years on the DIS I have seen too many posts that start off as vents become dominated by the mean spirited. I do believe there is a difference between offering up a different opinion in a well mannered, respectful tone versus circling around threads like buzzards hunting road kill.

When this happens, I think the original poster has every right to ask for the thread to be closed, especially here on the CB, where the tone and the people are usually friendly and warm. There are other forums for debate, namely the Debate Board. :)

That's why I'm AGREEING with Bob O. on this thread :jester: :jester: :jester: :jester: :jester:

And you're right, ALEX, I grumble about my boss at times with my friends, and I always expect them to say in unison.........YES, YOU'RE RIGHT, EROS . Can you even imagine that one of my "friends" would actually have the audacity to say that I'm WRONG?????? UNFORGIVEABLE...... just like on the DIS:rolleyes:

Eros... did you by any chance graduate medical school in the same class as the guy that was just convicted for leaving in the middle of a surgery to cash a check? :)

Does an OP have the right to close a thread? Yes. It’s the rule, it’s a good one. If someone wants to continue the discussion, they have the right to start a new thread.

If an individual decides to share a part of their personal life, they cannot expect others to agree with what they post, and they have to expect people to respond to their thread whether it be positive or negative.

What really amazes me is that it is the same people that do the attacking every time.

Well, what amazes me is the loquacious way some individuals post, giving us too much insight into their personal lives, on a public bulletin board. It appears to many (not all) viewers of said board, that seeking out the answers to their infinitesimal life questions can become “overbearing” thereby not making a strong argument to anything they post.

the tongue running fast, the tongue running loose, the tongue running on wheels; all talk and no cider; "foul whisperings are abroad" [Macbeth]; "what a spendthrift is he of his tongue!" [Tempest].

Bwa ha ha ha ha I think you may be onto something.

As a poster on the original thread I don't think my post was an attack at all. My kids play on soccer teams, and it is unbelievable to me that somebody would say that they would only go to the games that are convenient to them.

Alex, I know you were a soccer coach last year, I'm not sure about this year, I know if I were a coach I would be pretty upset if my team kids only bothered to go to the games that were convenient for them. What if the entire team decided that's the way they were going to play the season?

That's not a team.

To ensure her child plays in every game I suggested AYSO.

Not an attack at all.

well I don't think anyone said YOUR post was an attack....and this is a general discussion.
I will admit that if someone decided they were just coming to home games the only position they would be playing would be left out.
As I have been saying all along there are ways to phrase things that are nice and ways to say things that hurt people's feelings...

And there are ways to give an honest opinion with no malice intended and it being misconstrued.

That is so true Eeyore2u but if your opinion has been misconstrued 4,386 times then maybe you need to reconsider things!

Time to *stand up and applaud Alex*. We can make our point in a way that neither attacks or belittles a person. It can also be done without lumping people into a group and then attacking that group as a whole.

Bridget I do not think I have seen you attack anyone.:)

Well since I only have 3774 posts I'll relax and think it's not me we are speaking about in these generalizations.

Well, said, DopeyRN! That is another thing I'm so tired of seeing on this board.

Alex, your posts on this thread have been right on!
