We're just back from WDW and I wanted to report our smoking experience. In the past we didn't request smoking rooms because we smoke outside on our deck at home, so we smoked outside while on vacation too. I didn't make any requests to be near DSA but I had emailed DVC and WDW to state that I was not pleased with the new policy at the resorts and thought there were better solutions. I smoke cigarettes and feel guilty about it, my husband smokes cigars and does not feel guilty about it.
I don't know if any of the rooms we stayed in were former smoking rooms but my DD would have commented if she smelled any odor at all.
We were supposed to be at BWI first w/ AP discount. We were moved to BWV studio because BWI was full - I was not happy as we had 2 adults, 2 teens and a 7 yr old but we were given an aerobed to use - if I had known 5 could be in a studio I would have booked SSR or OWK studio and saved $100 night, but I guess its only OK if the resort decides its necessary Not
There was not a smoking policy on the charge authorization statement signed on check-in (I read every word) and nothing was said to me about smoking and I didn't ask. The map we were given did have DS locations listed (some are hard to figure out). We were put in a room closest to a DSA that goes out to the clown pool. That particular DSA is not covered and there is a bench. The ashtray seemed to be cleaned a few times a day. The first night we we looking for the DS location at the pool and couldn't find it. There were no CM's around as it was late. I saw a man smoking a cigar by the hot tub and and asked if it was the DSA, he didn't answer, so I said well this must be it and we sat at a table. The man said he didn't say anything because he wasn't sure what I was going to say..I said we wanted a place to smoke too! Our two groups were the only ones in this area that night. THe next day we found the DSA at the pool, it was in the sun with no place to sit nearby; I hated that area. I was glad our stay was only 2 nights.
On to OKW. There was a notation about the smoking policy on the charge slip signed. Nothing was was said about smoking and I didn't ask. The map I was given did not have DS locations on it. DS location outside the bld in the courtyard, there was a bench, no overhead cover. Ashtray was not cleaned out at all in the 5 nights I was there. I met about a dozen other smokers in the smoking area. DS location at Turtle Shack pool area was near picnic table and table seating. I didn't look for a DS location at the main pool.
I really missed being able to smoke on the balcony.
We pool-hopped to Poly and CSR (we're DVC). The DS locations at both of these pools were great and we were able to relax. I was able to easily find a DS location at all the places we visted for dinner (POLY, AKL, GF, OKW, BW, DD) without a map.
All in all, finding a place to smoke at the resorts we visited was not hard, but they were not particularly relaxing - no shade or place to put a drink for the most part. All of the DSA's were in area's non-smokers might walk by but I guess they could avoid them. We didn't have any confrontations with anyone about smoking. We weren't charged because we left a residual smoke odor in the rooms (from being smokers and smoking in DSAs). It was tolerable but I did wish I didn't need to smoke (I've tried many times and methods to quit).
Parting comment -
At MCO I had a smoke in a designated smoking area by curbside checkin before leaving. My DD said a a small boy in line for checkin in front of her saw me smoking and said to his parents 'that lady is smoking, people are going to be killed, tell someone'; DD said his parents didn't respond to him, she thought he might have gotten smoking on an airplane confused with smoking near airplanes. She hates smoking and passes on every comment to me. Makes me
