Happy 2017!
We are checking in to Aulani tomorrow and swung by yesterday to go through the process of purchasing DVC points.
The experience was smooth, no glitches, no problems at all. It took a couple of hours but we expected that.
We only had a few questions so we didn't have to listen to any of the sales pitch. Zero pressure. We knew what we wanted and understand the system.

Here's are a few items of interest:
  • Direct sales at Poly, Aulani and Animal Kingdom
  • Poly has a deal right now with 20 additional points per year for length of contract, so basically a 10% discount
  • Our salesperson was outstanding.
  • He thought we would have to wait about an hour to sign closing documents so gave us a $100 Disney gift card to go relax and have a drink or eat at any of the restaurants. Wait was actually 15 minutes so we returned right away and went out to celebrate after.
  • Plenty of treats and stuff to drink at the preview center
  • Free Duffy bear, Disney print, DVC pins and other goodies
  • We can't attend the member event tomorrow morning so he is getting us the swag from the event. T-shirts, hats, etc.
  • We already have an ocean view room, he is making sure our room assignment is awesome
  • A perk I wasn't aware of until we purchased--we can make dining reservations when we reserve our DVC room. No more waiting for the 180 mark!
Probably my favorite part: signing on the dotted lines was signing at the Mickey heads.

If you have any questions, I'll try to answer. Just wanted to share since the experience is so fresh, and it was a very good experience.

The ADR perk...does that only apply to AUL? So we can make ADRs at 11 months or 7 months before the 180 days?

How much was akv selling for? Did hey discuss financing options with you as to Rates if you were to finance? Thanks

Not sure if the info on the Dining is correct-- we have always had to wait 180 days. Maybe that's only for aulani?

The first one is at the very least misleading, or your salesperson is flat-out lying to you. Poly and Aulani are in active sales, but AKV isn't the only sold-out resort you can purchase directly from Disney. You have to wait for points to come available for the other resorts, but you can get them.

The second one could only apply to Aulani, otherwise it's a lie from the salesperson.

but... but... but...

Salespeople NEVER lie!

:jumping1:

Yeah, the dining is a no way. The systems just aren't set up for it.

I am tempted to buy a few Poly points. Maybe I could finally get that reservation at the Chef's Table at Victoria and Alberts.

Yeah, and if you walk your reservation, you can reserve it for two years from now!

Really not seeing how this particular facet of buying direct is remotely possible, sorry OP. Though, it might very well just be for Aulani, despite their systems not being set up for anything outside of 180 days either.

It could be a way of specifying the 180+10 window you get for any ADR with a Disney resort reservation in the context of being a special DVC perk.

I assumed it must be that, but it seems the OP was told it was no matter when the reservation was made (i.e., could be at the 11-month mark)...

Which is crazy town, because you have system load issues. Given that a lot of stuff isn't even loaded 180 in advance, the idea of being able to book further out is laughable. Stuff at MK for September-December is unlikely to be bookable for dinner 6 months out until party nights and policies are officially announced. Park hours play a role.

None of that works at 10 months, or 9.

It's possible Aulani allows it for on property restaurants though. Heck, WDW and DL are completely different as it is.

I doubt that. One really doesn't even need to make reservations for the restaurants until you arrive. They are on Island time and aren't going to be taking reservations almost a year ahead.

Hi guys--I'm following up with our sales guy to get clarification for sure.
Both my husband and I drilled down on this while we were talking and he was insistent that this is the case. I stopped by the preview center to confirm and they referred me to member services (nice, huh--with staff right there yet unwilling to come out and talk).

Out of interest - say you book your DVC stay using your current use-year points... Let's say its a 10 day stay. What is to stop you booking another 10 days in front of your existing reservation, to allow you to book day 1 dining 190 days out? Then immediately cancelling your extra DVC reservation?

Maybe they added this as a perk for those buying direct? Now THAT would be a perk!

Absolutely nothing. For that matter, there is nothing that prevents this with resort stays, and people do it.

If you have the points and there is availability, nothing except your own conscience.

There are practical considerations. If you are booking an in demand resort at 11 months, you would have to tie up an extra 10 days of points for five months - until the 6 month dining window opened up.
If this was done for a resort or time of year that is not in demand, you could do the at the 6 month mark and you would only be tying up your extra 10 days of points points for a few days. You need a lot of points for this.

Truly, there wouldn't be a point in using DVC points for this. Just book a Campsite in advance.
