Clearing the air about PALO

This thread has opened a whole new world of insignificance for me! Is it WaltDisney'sWorld or is it WaltDisneyWorld? Was it WaltDisney'sWorld until he died (signifying ownership) and then changed to WaltDisneyWorld (in memorial)? Life has so many perplexing issues!!!

 All this stuff just makes me crazy!

:hyper: In a good way though! :hyper:

Actually, the word caribbean has two pronounciations in the dictionary, and only one of them is a common one that people use (from what I have heard):

#1: cuh RIB be an (a common pronounciation)

The other is

car ri BE an---NOTE: if you want to emphasize the BE, then you have to say car and NOT care. I have always used #1 and will continue to do so.

And yes, people in Michigan do say Fords.....DRIVES ME NUTS!

::yes::

And Chrysler's and Meijer's!!!!

Around here a lot of people do go to Kmarts and Wal-marts and these aren't multiple stores. :) I'm so used to people getting my name wrong, even though it's only 4 letters, on things like this as long as I know what they are talking about I don't care.

Ebonics though is another story.

It's Palo, not PALO. It would be all caps if it were an acronym, but it's not an acronym.

One thing that drives me crazy is how many people use apostrophes when plurailizing. Plural nouns should not have apostrophes.

An apostrophe is for contractions (such "don't go") and possessive nouns (such as "the dog's collar") and possessive plural nouns (such as "the dogs' collars") and possessive proper nouns (such as "Bob's dog") -- and not for possesive pronouns ("the dog wagged its tail," not ("the dog wagged it's tail").

Visit the Apostrophe Protection Society at http://www.apostrophe.fsnet.co.uk/

Let me just add one more thing...

Of all the restaurant's on the boat, PALO'S is it's bestest one!

Thats you're opinion.

Checked out your photo. The A is taller than the rest of the letters. So I guess we are all wrong! It is (spelled those out - not sure if it should be its or it's) really pAlo, not Palo or PALO.

Horace: That's my pet peeve too - apostrophes where they don't belong! Especially when it's up on a sign for everybody to see!

Example: "Jimmy's Pizza Parlor, where we specialize in sandwiches and pizza's"

aaargh! Why do they insist on putting an apostrophe in the word pizzas???

Ok - back on topic. Palo is one of our favorite parts of cruising with Disney! Love the brunch!!

LOL!

But seriously, capaitalization on signs and logos and capitalization within text are two different things. As you drive around town, you'll see that most signs are in all capitals. But the same business names within text generally follow the normal capitalization rules of proper nouns.

In the daily Personnal Navigators on the ships, the restaurant name is written as Palo. The same is true on DCL's official site and in the DCL brochure.

I hope nobody thinks I'm attacking them. But since the whole purpose of this thread is to "clear the air" about the name of the restaurant, I thought I'd offer my two cents.

Can't hurt my feelings! This thread is the most fun I have had since my colonoscopy yesterday!

I haven't seen this much neurosis since the last episode of Seinfield.

Not hurting me either! LOL! Just wanted to justify my capitalization habit with Palo....I keep staring at that sign! LOL!!!

Anyone up for souffle's from Palo's???:hyper:

Kamy, I had TWO souffles's!

Anyone ever hear teenagers say "Your guys's"?

"We can come over to your guys's house"

That, and "I'm like", "It's like"... AAAAGH!!! :crazy2:

"I was like, no way, so she's like yes we did, so I like go, forget it, you know. It's like not worth it"

Our tax dollars at work in the public schools.

'Beano'

Beano,
We need to fix that. And how?, you might ask.

Spend more tax dollars!

And if that doesn't work, what next?

Spend more tax dollars!

And then what?

Spend more tax dollars.

Awww, please don't attack the poor teachers. We have enough abuse with which to deal every day. Just kidding around, I'm actually getting used to the abuse.

My pet peeves? "irregardless", "alot", as well as "donut" and all of the other words which have been simplified for the sake of advertisements.

Goodfaerie: Thanks for the clarification on the correct pronunciation for Caribbean.

Since we're discussing it, I know that the dictionary started accepting both in the recent past, but I have to tell you, I cringe when I hear Caribbean pronounced carRIBean and not CaribBEan. It is the PIrates of the CaribBEan not the piRATES of the CaRIBbean.
And it's DAYta not Dahta.
And it's NU-CLE-AR NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NUK-U-LAR!!!!
Sorry. I just lost my mind. I'm back now.

Hugs to all

GoodFaerie
I hope your kidding around.

Said in general to the thread. With this type of thing I'm always reminded of those immortal words by the great philosopher, Burt Reynolds, in Smokey and the Bandit. Bascially he said that how stupid you sound depends on what part of the country you're in when you say it. Caribbean and Data can be pronounced either way and be legit. Then there's local town names like Cairo (KAY-row), GA and Havana (HAY-vana), FL. These type of coloquial pronunciations are fun and add character. To look down on someone for pronouncing it differently than one is used to or feels is correct (sometimes wrongly so) is unreasonable.

Since I've been to "Palo" more than once, can I call it Palos... :p  :smooth: :hyper: :teeth: ::yes:: ;) :)
