cleaning irons

This really isn't a craft item, but I know you guys can help and I can't find anything through google.
My iron is spitting out rust from the inside. Can this be cleaned out or do I just toss the whole thing?

Put vinegar in it and then steam it out like you do with the coffee pot

Oh my gosh! Tried to steam it out with vinegar last night. My whole house was smoking and the smell was something else! My DH came downstairs and told me to get it outside.

Needless to say, today I bought a new iron!

Oh my! How much did you put in! I guess I should have told you not to fill it! It does smell a bit....
