For years I've been saying that the Universal Cineplex should set aside one theater as a "repertory house" like they had in New York and elsewhere when Steven Spielberg was growing up.

These were movie theaters that showed double bills of old movies, sometimes a diffferent bill every day. It was a great way for movie buffs to learn the history of the art form.

Well, of course, Universal doesn't listen to me, but maybe a little bit of the message is getting through.

Recently, they've been showing some old films at the Cineplex a few times a day. On Saturday, I stopped in for my Mythos fix and noticed they were screening "The Maltese Falcon," one of the all-time greats!

This is great news (I think). I hope they keep it up and that enough people take advantage that management sees it's a concept worth continuing.

Thats great and I agree with you and sad thing is alot of the younger generation just wants to see the new stuff and would love to see my own kids apreciate the great directing and how much film has evolved over the years

I'm shocked they show RHPS there...with all the mess the audience creates...I would hate to have to clean that place up.

I kinda agree. But part of the week i picked my trip is because they're doing it the Fri night im there. It's funny, I was in the musical at my acting school, but I'm still a "virgin". And I agree with you Kelly. I love watching old movies, part of why I got netflix. It'd be nice to see them on the big screen again. Like during Halloween doing like a marathon of Universal's original monster movies. That'd rock hardcore!!! :thumbsup2

I love the idea but then again, I'm an old movie buff. I'd love to have the opportunity to see some of the all time great films on the big screen. I'm just not sure that it will go over very well. First, I don't think the younger generation is into old films. I know my teens just refuse to watch a film if it's in black and white. It makes me nuts. Maybe it would work at the Cineplex though. I know when we go as a family, my husband and two sons will usually go and watch one film, usually an action-adventure, and I'll check out a chick flick or a comedy. A classic film would be a great alternative for me and hopefully others like me.

One of our local theaters tried doing this one time each month. At first they got a pretty decent turnout, then it just dropped off. And, my area has a large retirement community, where I thought there'd be a ready made market. Guess not. :confused3

That's a great idea. THey should at least dedicate one theater out of the what 20?:confused3 totally to old movies. I love all those HBogart movies, and Edward G., James Cagney, etc., etc. I can watch Key Largo over and over again.

"Yeah see, I made him, just like a tailor makes a suit a clothes, I gave him his public all wrapped up in a shiny bow, yeah, but when the going got tough did he remember? Nah, no see, all he wanted to do was save his own dirty neck" Ed G.
