Whats' the difference between Web Specials, Discount coach, etc? Take Airtran for example. The different rates say L class of service or Q Class of Service, or P Class of Service, etc. beyond choosing your seats at check in and refundable or non refundable fares (on the business or 1st class fares) what 's the real difference? Do you get honey roasted peanuts instead of plain peanuts? Or do you just get a "Smile and Wave Girls, Smile and Wave?" Seriously though....I am just curious what the difference is if there even is one. TIA

They are price categories. When booking opens up, the airline assigns so many seats to each category. When the cheapest category is soldout, then they move to a higher price category. They can adjust the number of seats in a category as they see how they are selling. They usually work in reverse, T is cheaper than S, etc. I think B is the highest price refundable. It has nothing to do with service itself, except for first class.

On Airtran, the more expensive fares get to pick their seat assignments when they book. The less expensive fares have to wait until they check in.

The huge thing in the frequent flyer world is what class of service do you get the most qualification miles for elite status. For example a T fare only gets 1 for 1 on actual miles however if you are booked YBM and all first class fares recieve 1.5 to 1 on the actual miles. This is Delta of course and some airlines only pay out .75 to 1 on the qualification miles. It's nothing if you are a recreational flyer though.
