Claim my own bags

Except me. I remember every detail of certain aspects of Eric's trip :teeth: No, I wasn't there - I'm who he called with his on-the-scene report of his 5/8/05 Magical Express experience!
Wow, kaytieeldr even remembers the exact date. Now I know she MUST be Ronda, the person I spoke with on the phone that day almost 2 years ago!:rotfl:

You keep saying that and you are wrong. Bags are scanned off the airplane, by the airlines. The Disney barcode is scanned when they arrive at the sorting location. And it is possible they are scanned when they arrive at Disney. Disney isn't going to pay 5 people to scan 1 bag, they are to efficient.

It is also doubtful that the trucks are GPS equipped going out. I have been told by drivers they are not GPS equipped. Trucks are supposedly equipped because of TAS regulations going back to the airport, but even that has not been verified. The baggage transfer is very simple but efficient. There have been reports of lost luggage, but not much and I am sure if Disney was responsible, they took care of the folks. So you really don't have to worry about your luggage. It is being handled by a very efficient corporation and system.

Sorry Edd, you are wrong. All DME bags are scanned when they get to the Disney Sorting Facility at the airport. They are scanned again when they are placed into a cage with other bags going to the same resort. They are scanned a third time when the cage is placed into the truck that delivers them to the resort. At the resort, they are scanned when they are taken out of the cage and again when they are taken to guest's room. That is a total of 5 times.

Whether the drivers know it or not all of the trucks are equipped with GPS tracking devices. It is not like the GPS you have in your car that gives you directions. It just allows Disney to see where the truck is at all times. I know this because I am very very very very close to a cast member that has to sometimes monitor the location of the trucks. And, yes, they can tell if the driver stops at a 7-11 on the way.

PS. The airlines do not scan the bags when they leave the plane. A few of the big airlines (Delta, United, Contenential, etc) will scan the bags that are left over after everyone has taken their bags off the carousel. Contenential will also scan bags when they put them onto a plane. Most of the others do not even have a scanning system to track the bags.

I have always said they are scanned when they go to Disney sorting. Also stated they may or may not be scanned at Disney , but feel they probably have to be to be sorted. As for the other scans it could be or couldn't be because it is kind of hard to scan a bag on the bottom of the cages when it is covered with other bags. All a scan does is put the information into a computer. How many times do you have to do that to accomplish getting it to your room.

It really doesn't matter because Disney is cutting back on employees and I don't think they are going to pay someone to do all that unnecessary scanning.

No one really cares how many times they are scanned, all they want to know is that their luggage gets in their roooms safely. So you can make up all kinds of ideas how it is getting done. Just remember talk is cheap. The name Disney on the procedure should make everyone feel safe enough about their luggage.

As far as GPs is concerned, my information is from two drivers of the trucks. I feel sorry for them if they don't know their moves may be monitored by someone back in the office on a PC. What good is a GPS anyway. They only take one route anyway and it can be timed, like about 30 minutes.

Scary as this thought may be to you, not everyone thinks the same way you do. Some people, myself included, feel a need to know how a system works to truly trust it. Just makes us feel better if we know what's going on, even if we're not responsible for it.

You don't have to understand us, you don't have to agree with us, but just know that we exist.

I'm just speculating here based on previous experience, but something tells me sluggo isn't just "making it up."

Like I said before, "talk is cheap." Credibility is what I look for and when you use second-hand accounts that is not credibility. Take it anyway you want.

The reason that the bags are scanned so many times and the trucks all have GPS is so that the resort bell services/DME CM's can tell exactly where the bags are when they are asked by the guests.

The trucks go many different routes based on which resorts they are going to. The resort CM's can look up the scan records of the bag on their computer and if it has been awhile since the bag was scanned onto a truck they can call DME luggage office at the airport. The airport CM's can see where that particular truck is it and estimate how much longer it will be before it arrives.

You are correct about one thing. It would be hard to scan all of the bags while they are inside of the cage. The cage is scanned when it goes into a truck and because the computer knows which bags were scanned into the cage it automatically shows that the bags were scanned into the truck. So while the bag is not indivually scanned it results in the same thing. So, I will try to be exact and say in the future that the bags are scanned 4.5 times.

Oh, by the way, I am as close as you can be to that CM. Take a look at my location.

Edd--GPS devices are now SOP. They are inexpensive and they allow a company to track a truck that's stolen, monitor drivers who speed and determine which drivers make too many personal stops. They can even be used for realtime traffic information. They may not care if a driver makes a coffee stop at 7-11.

A driver that does his job has no reason to know there is a GPS device on the truck. Talk is cheap, a driver that says there isn't a GPS device on his truck has no credibility with me. He has no reason to know.

Services like FEDX scan packages every step of the way. It would make sense that DME does the same. How much extra time do you think it takes the bell services employee to scan the bag as he drops it off? Probably less time then it would take to fill out a log sheet.
