I was just wondering how people that lived in cities with two pro sport teams (in the same sport), do you look at the other team as a huge rival, or do you root for them to win as well. Do the Yankees hate the Mets, do the Chi Sox always want the Cubbies to lose? Or do you tend to like both teams, since they both represent your city. This doesn't apply to just baseball of course, but any dual sports cities.

I root for both teams. The Yankees are my favorite but I like to see the Mets do well too.

I'm not really a sports fan, but my husband is. If his team isn't doing well or isn't in the playoffs he is happy when the other NY team is.

LA Lakers and Clippers. I'm not really into basketball anymore but I don't think there's much of a rivalry.

In baseball, I guess if you are from LA you can say Dodgers and Angels but any TRUE Angels fan knows we represent Orange County and Anaheim and not that city north of us. I think you can tell I hate the name change.

New Yorker here, and yes there is BIG rivalry between Mets and Yankees fans.
But the Yankees are considered the state team, and the Mets are the NYC team (Metropolitans), so all the upstate NY folks like the Yankees.

I like the mets and would like to see the Yankees in last place!! Most people either like the Islanders ro the rangers, not both. As far as football there is really onl,y one NY team- The Buffalo Bills- the Jets and the Giants are NJ teams as far as I am concerned, they play in NJ not NY so they really are not NY teams!

I am a Yankee fan and I despise the Mets. I could not care less about the Red Sox, but the Mets... bah!

My Mom bought my brother a Subway Series T shirt years ago and he refused to wear it because it said Mets on it.:thumbsup2 I love that guy.
DH will watch the Mets if there is no Yankee game on.

Hockey: Rangers/Devils/Islanders I don't care. I was a Ranger fan, now I don't watch at all.

Football:Jets/Giants. I pick Giants, but Jets are fine.

Basketball: I hate the entire sport with a passion.

Chicago - most people don't root for both teams, and yes, most like it when the other team loses. Go White Sox!

My DH is a Yankees fan and my brother is a Mets fan. DH has made it very clear to my DBrother that he will not let him buy anything "Mets" for our son. DS4 (just about 5) will be a Yankees fan and that's that :rotfl:! Sure enough, DS likes the Yankees (but I think it's only b/c Daddy does).

Of course, they do this in a joking sense b/c DH did go with my brother to a Mets game :goodvibes.

my mom has been a mets fan her whole life and absolutely HATES the yankees. she roots for anyone who beats the yankees if they are in the playoffs. she was extremely excited when the sox beat them in the series. it's funny how mad she gets when the yankees are on a winning streak and the mets are on a losing one.

as for me. i hate the rangers, i'm a devils fan. i was so happy when the rangers got beat out this season. in nj, you're either a rangers or a devils fan, but not both. (i know they're not in the same state, but close enough)

Not quite :). My cousin lives upstate and he has always been a Baltimore Oriels fan.

In Chicago, for the most part you are usually a Cubs fan OR a White Sux (I mean Sox) fan-NOT both.

I have two favorite teams-the CUBS and whoever is playing the White Sox.

GO CUBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a brit we have lots of teams in our football leagues with many in the same towns or cities ie in London in the top division there are;
Chelsea
Arsenal
Tottenham
West Ham
Fulham

generally we do not like to see our local rivals doing well whether our team is doing well or not. The only exception may be in European competitions where some may support another English team even if they were a local rival

I am in the minority here in Chicago, and cheer for both teams. The White Sox are my favorite, but so long the Cubs are not playing them, I cheer for the Cubbies as well.

Sounds like DBF and his uncle. DBF is a yankees fan, his uncle a mets fan. The uncles birthday party was a few weeks ago and they had plastic cups with the Mets logo on them. So DBF HAD to rumage around for a sharpie and cross out all the mets logos on his cup. It was all a joke. But it was funny to hear his little cousins start screaming "DAD, B's crossing out the Mets!!"

Don't get me started when it comes to hockey. DBF is a gigantic Islanders fan, and his best friend is a huge Rangers fan. They don't actually fight, but they love to talk smack to each other and annoy each other all season long. They make bets on the games and a bet for the whole season. They usually go to all the games the two teams play against each other and then there are crazy bets made for that. I'm just glad hockey seasons over for a little while.

I'm a Mets fan and my DH is a Yankee fan and believe me we wonder how the marriage lasts. :rotfl2: As for other teams, we are NYRanger fans and cannot stand most NYIslander fans (some of which are our dear friends). Neither of us are NY football fans but it seems our friends who are only like their team and actually root for the other NY teams to lose quite often. From my experience there aren't many NY sports fans that support another NY team other than their own.

I think for the majority in Chicago you are either a Sox fan or a Cubs fan. And most cheer for the other team to lose.

In Chicago is it also somewhat designated by where you live. Southside = Sox, Northside = Cubs so that plays into it as well.

Go Sox!

Well - not exactly the same city, but we root for the Giants as well as our A's. There are a mix of fans around here. Some root only for the Giants/hate the A's and vice versa. We're probably the exception. We have weekend A's tix, but our friends have full season Giants tix. We have been known to go to Giants games. But - when they play each other, I'm all about the A's.

Thank you for being a friend in my hatred for basketball, I really can't stand basketball at all, I wish it would just go away:scared:

I'm a devils fan - even though the Rangers and Islanders are from NY there is still a rivarly. Down with the rangers!

Giants and Jets are both from Jersey, the meadowlands is still in Jersey as far as I know. Go Giants! I really don't care too much but DFi loves the giants.
