not a peep from Citi.....yet

off to check.

Thanks for the heads up.:thumbsup2

The only reason they are letting people know is because someone let the cat outta the bag one post said. I checked my acct. No notices here yet. I cant believe this happend in early May

They did replace my card in May after I had just received my new cards in April. I called to complain because they gave me a new number, and I wanted my old one that I've had for 5 years. They just said they were using new kinds of cards, but now I know why really. Sheesh. You think they could give people a heads up.

I guess I'm not sure what is going on, are effected customers being notified and issued new cards now, or were they previously?
Or is it that it wasn't made public until now?

While I agree it sounds shady that they didn't say anything sooner, they were probably trying to avoid mass hysteria from letting info get out about what happened.

On some level, this thread is a case in point.

ITA, it was only 1% of its American customers who were effected. I wonder if it was a random group of 200,000 or were they a certain type of customer. (business card holders, online banking custs, etc)
Any security breach at a bank is worrisome, but as long as they are notifying the customers who were directly effected, I'm OK with that. As much as I expect these companies to keep my info safe, things happen, and I know that is a risk when I use the internet for any of my financial/banking needs.

You call it mass hysteria that people are concerned that their financial accounts were possibly hacked into? Ummm I'm going to have to disagree with you there. Please don't forget that these customers are paying them for a service. It doesn't matter if it makes people panic.. they have a right to know when said service has allowed their information to be compromised.

According to the original post.. people were only notified because the information was leaked. Which is not "notifying those who are directly affected".. it's cover up.

In principle, I agree with you, but looking carefully at what you said kind of supports what I was saying about hysteria. "possibly hacked into" is the key phrase there... for an overwhelming majority of customers (e.g. 99+%) this whole thing is a non-issue.

For those who genuinely were/are at risk, it's in Citi's best interest, just like it is for the customer, to resolve the issue as quickly and painlessly as possible. It absolutely DOES matter if it makes people panic... that adds substantial noise and significantly slows down the process of fixing the issue for those in actual trouble.

There was also a PP who reported getting a new card. My guess is she was in the affected group. Sounds as though OPs information was never compromised to begin with.

But it does concern some people, and some more info would be nice. They have a gov't contract:rolleyes: DH is currently travelling and using his. I did tell him to keep an eye on his.

I am not about mass hysteria, but I want to know that his CC account/info is safe because it could effect his job. I just want to be proactive. Not everyone is in this boat;)

We were notified last Friday. Only one of our cards was potentially compromised. - Suzanne

The OP is written by a DISer with no link to statements saying they are notifying people because the info was leaked to the press. For all I know she got it from soneone's blog and that is their opinion, and not necessarily a fact. There are laws/regulations that Citi has to follow in cases like this, I'm sure telling the effected customers is part of that, I'm not sure making the info public is.

If anyone has a link it would be helpful. I have read that they are notifying customers, I haven't read that they were keeping anything under wraps :confused3

And people are are on their high horses about Sony and their few day delay of telling the public what happened.

The Op said the news. My *assumption* is going to be that means a news station. It's neither here nor there for me, I don't have a Citibank account. AND you are correct I don't know the details completely. Nor do you. So we are discussing it on a message board where I have stated I feel a bank has an obligation to it's customers to release information such as this. Some people will overreact for sure. But to assume it will incite mass panic in a bunch of ill informed people is not a reason for any company, much less a bank to withold information about someones money.

I look at it this way.. I go to a restaurant. Something got into the food to make people somewhat ill.. but they decide since it will only affect 10% of us and they aren't sure we'll get sick they'll just sit on the info.

I'm all for full disclosure from my financial institution I guess.

We can agree to disagree.

I for one would like to know either way. First thing I did was check my account even though i check it all the time. My husband also has a citicard and I dont know if he happen to get a new one but I'll be sure to find out today when he gets home. When this can afeect many people it should be put out there either way. I happen to be up early and saw it on tv otherwise I wouldnt have know until I watched the news or read on here.
