Thank you for the clarification. Since I am french speaking , sometime my english does not permit me to says exactly what I want ! And this is exactly what I wanted to say !

Toto2, just curious why you are so interested in something happening in a country you don’t live in? Do you questions your government about the role they have played in this war?

Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to start something I am just curious, that’s all. I enjoyed your posts and opinions, but now I am curious. Thank you for your time.

I don’t get the cartoon or the quote.....are they trying to say that President Bush is afraid to talk about the great sacrifices our brave soldiers are making in Iraq?

i think the notion is that Bush has a hard time facing up to the weary fact - the world doesn't want war. They don't want the guttering, the drowning, the froth corrupted lungs. The world is tired of petty little cowboys who parade around spreading the old lie:

Dulce et Decorum est Pro patria mori.

That's why Bush is hiding. He's hiding from the truth.

I live in the UK and I still have an opinion over Bush too - the worry is that his politics are affecting fellow human beings and even worse, affecting the politics in our own countries.

If America sneezes, Europe catches a cold as it were.

And Clinton NEVER did anthing like that, he ALWAYS asked the counrty if it was ok with everyone if he did something in another counrty. Bring back dear Mr. Clinton, he was the best.

So the leaders of other countries don’t think for themselves? America does not “RUN” the world.

It’s so funny, when a country screams USA help us, help us…. We do. Then we get flack from other countries for helping or for not helping enough. I don’t think people are ever happy no matter if we help or not. This will never change.

One thing you and I have in common is we do like Disney or we wouldn’t be on the site. And for this I am happy.

I think the point being made was a "why not?" comment. If Clinton behaved in the same way, he'd run out of my good books just as fast.

Whilst America doesn't run the world, she does influence it. No man is an island and no nation stands alone.

That reason is cause enough to worry for America.

In the same way, the care can by humanitarian - I'm certain you'd have an opinion if Germany started a genocidal policy, for instance.

I dont question what my governement did in this war because we did not participate in it. Canada thought that we should not go ank let the inspections continue. WEe are right now in Afganistant as a peacekeeping force, but did not participate in the invasion as well.

The USA being our very big next door neihbors , and being such a superpower , everything they do has some kind of impact on our life and the life of the much of the inhabitant of the planet. Canada posses alot of ressorces that could be of interrest for the USA ( energy , petrol etc) and Canada is very much stratégic , since we control the north of the continant and the St-Laurence river that cuts to the hart of the continent. The USA intervenes a lot into our National policies through its ambassador who regularly in the papers trying to imposse the american view on our policies. All this could prove problematic in the future.

Lastly , it is fascinating ! I am very interested in local , provincial , national and international politics. We do not live in a vacum , all alone in our country. What we do here in Montreal has impact all over the world. One of the biggest entertainement industry in the world , Le Cirque du Soleil, has it's head office five minutes by foot from my house. Capitain Kirk was born a few streets from my parents ! So you can imagine what impact on the world has a super power like the USA !

I found the discussion here on the DIS very often interesting , andexept for a few people , respectfull. Our politics here in Canada are not as decisive as there are in the USA , and it is fascinating to something like the word Liberal sudeenly become the worst dirty word in the world . We tend to find it quite amusing.

But if you go back about 3 - 4 months you would see that toto2 wrote in broken English, but one day it was perfect overnight. The English improved at the same time as our friend with the "fiance who was in Katrina" disappeared (banned?) from the interesting post. She also claimed to live in Canada, but seemed so into US politics.

Don't we all wish...No massive wars in countries that did nothing to us or our allies...A booming economy...an actual surplus in the budget...

Yeah...wasn't it awful when all we had to worry about was the president's zipper staying up ? :rotfl:

As Rajha can attest can attest by having met me here in Montreal ( you can read her travelogue to my city here on the community board) i live in montreal. My english comes and goes depending on how tired , or how fast I type !

I was never banned from the Dis. If you follow my posts , you will see that I always treat my "opponent" in discussions with the up-most respect. And I will had that it would be quite foolish to comme back with the same name and the same signature ( if you follow the link to my foundation , you will see pictures of me , having a lot of fun in my hometown of Montreal)

And I am a he , by the way ( I hope toto in the wizard of Oz was a he as well , otherwise my nickname would be quite strange !)

And yess , I do found american politics fascinating , and do have an oppinion about it , for the reasons previously posted. I try to approche it without the usual misconception people from other countries have about the USA.

I am only left with the chance to thank you for the compliment if you think that my english is sometimes perfect. I guess with time I get better at it and hope that you are as dedicated to learn a secound language as I am.

edited to add that i never gave my identity to anyone's boyfriend so they could continue posting on the Dis ! I am not any kind of infiltrator ! But it is nice to know that someone is following my path here on the Dis !

Yeah...wasn't it awful when all we had to worry about was the president's zipper staying up ?

Ah, the good old days! Too bad so many Americans were suckered by religious talk and conservative propaganda and we had to trade that for inflation, huge national debt, soaring gas and oil prices, corruption in government, spying on US citizens, and a war ...

Rich::

President Bush just attacked? He didn’t try other means..right? He just woke up on the morning of March 19th, 2003 and said..”I think we should go into Iraq today..yes that’s what we will do!!, Hey Laura get my boots!”

Bush first addressed the UN on September 12th,2002 about the Iraq threat , the coalition went into Iraq on March 19th, 2003. Sadam Hussein had
5 month’s (that is one long per-attack) to get his act together…but as we all know he didn’t….

(side note : if SH had nothing to hide why not cooperate with the inspectors? He had to know that not cooperating with the inspectors would cause some people to believe he was hiding something..maybe WMD..right?)

..and this is what Bush said Saddam Hussein had to do if he wanted peace..it doesn’t sound to unreasonable to me..how about you?

Bush said that if Iraq wants peace and an end to U.N. sanctions, it must take a number of steps:

• Immediately and unconditionally foreswear, disclose, and remove or destroy all weapons of mass destruction, long- range missiles and all related material.
• Immediately end all support for terrorism and act to suppress it.
• Cease persecution of its civilian population, including Shi'a, Sunnis, Kurds and others.
• Release or account for all Gulf War personnel whose fate is still unknown. U.S. Navy pilot Cmdr. Jeffrey Speicher is one of those still missing.
• Immediately end all illicit trade outside the oil-for- food program. Accept U.N. administration of funds from that program to ensure the money is used fairly and promptly for the benefit of the Iraqi people.

Bush said that if Iraq takes these steps, it will "signal a new openness and accountability in Iraq." But if Saddam Hussein thumbs his nose at the United Nations, he said, "the world must move deliberately, decisively, to hold Iraq to account."

Interesting time line site from back then…with comments from President Bush, Rumsfeld, and Powell. (in 3, 2, 1….)

Interesting Iraq time line

While all you say is correct Charlie - Rich is also correct. Congress never declared WAR - therefore by the Consititution we are not at war. However we also haven't declared WAR since WWII - this trend of "Using maximum force" by Presidents worries me since it seems we no longer care with the Constitution says or doesn't say about war. The reason why the Constitution is written the way it is, I believe, is because our fonding fathers saw how easy it is for us to just go to war. Which is why the declaration has to be made through congress. I doubt that Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, or this "conflict" would have actually passed Congress if the Presidents had asked for a declaration of war - which is why they went for the easier option.

Yup :teeth:

No state of war was ever declared.

[EDIT] Just to clarify, President Bush didn't attack personally - he sat in the Whitehouse bath tub and did Presidential things.

Maybe you missed the fact that the U.S. has not issued a declaration of war since WWII. The Constitution clearly grants the Congress the power to declare war, in Article 1, Section 8. Note that Article 1 makes no mention anywhere of the President or Executive Branch.

How can we talk about peace when no war has been declared? How can we "win" something that doesn't really exist? :confused3

::yes:: The founding fathers realized that we are often too fond of fighting and that the ability to declare war should not rest in the hands of a single individual. They felt that the Congress with its many members would be a better forum to debate and decide such crucial issues.

I, too, am concerned by the incessant and excessive overreaching of this administration, especially in areas where the Constitution does not grant the Executive Branch specific powers or authority. Such unconstitutional power grabs should be a concern for every U.S. citizen because they threaten the Constitution more than any debate, dissent, t-shirt or protest ever will.
