Cinderella and others arrested

I'm sorry you feel that way.

Rising health care costs and other costs affect many businesses, including my own. I'm glad nobody has a clever costume they can wear to protest my business when the health care option we offer raises the premiums (guess what, it raises our premiums too) or if our employees are mad because we secretly switch their generic coffee to Folgers Crystals (let's see if they notice).

I wonder if you will boycott all companies whose workers feel their health care costs are too high, and don't feel they're paid enough, or just the ones with unions?

Best of luck!

It says they want to eliminate free health care for NEW hires. I just dislike these tactics and I don't care who they are.

When my husband started teaching his district paid for all health care. Now we pay $600 a month and he hasn't had a raise in years. I work part time for a school and I get zero bennefits, and only 2 days paid sick leave. I'm about at the same pay level as these employees. It is just hard all over. I don't mind them trying to get more if they can, but don't disrupt other people's lives- we all have our own problems!

I imagine there are 2 sides to the story. You get the employees side since they are taking the matter public. I don't think dressing up in costume and getting arrested seems like a good way to prove their point.

Where I live most people who are part time do not get health care benefits. I guess if you are Disney there are different expectations.

I have to pay for my health care. I think they were lucky getting it free this long.

I agree. Both my parent's jobs they have to pay for their health care..

If the other hotels pay more and get better benefits, why don't they all quit and go work there? :confused3

Boohoo. I don't know anyone who gets free healthcare through their work...especially not someone that only works part-time. These people seem pretty delusional to me.

And I'm so happy to hear that they are disrupting people's Disneyland vacations.

Rediculous.

I'm reading the MSN article right now...

"The other hotels around the area all have health care that is provided by the boss and have been able to get wage increases," said Ada Briceno, president of Unite Here Local 681, which represents the workers.

"At the other hotels in the same classification, for the same work, the workers get paid $2 to $3 an hour more."

It seems REALLY unlikely that people working, say, at Anabella or HoJo are making 2-3 dollars more per hour.

Though if they are, and these people don't want to go take those jobs, perhaps they could give up whatever DL/DCA ticket privileges they get, to offset a raise?

Disney spokeswoman Lisa Haines said Disney and the union are in negotiations and nothing has been finalized. She said workers have protested 14 times but sat down to negotiate only 11 times in the past six months.

Ah, what an excellent use of the employees' time!

i don't even have health care coverage (paid for by me or my job) but you don't see me out in the streets dressed up in character costumes trying to ruin hard working people's vacations. the dummies need to realize that if they start alienating disneyland's customers, there won't be a need for them to even have a job in a disneyland hotel. personally i booked off-site for our upcoming trip to avoid these idiots outside the DLH and PP that i had read about previously. also, after reading the msn article, all of the workers are making more money than i am per hour for making beds and washing dishes & i have a college degree so i don't see much cause for their complaints. they need to find a more constructive way to work our their differences than by trying to ruin a vacation that my family has worked hard and saved and planned for two years for to come visit the place where they work & ultimately to pay their salaries.

Ya if this is still going on next year I will be rethinking where we stay as well. Staying there is a financial stretch, and like a previous poster said my college educated husband is making about what they make in the bakery. I don't feel like paying a ton of money to deal with that.

I'm glad you did that, for you have done exactly what the Union wanted you to do. Now I would encourage you to go to the next level. Instead of wanting to bring everyone down to your decidedly low denomination, why don't you try to organize and fight for your rights, such as health insurance? It sure seems that these "dummies" and "idiots," as you call them, are smarter than you if they have been able to get more from their employer than you have!

Only a non-union member could say that somebody was "delusional" for wanting health insurance paid for by the employer. Why don't you try to form a union at work? You might find yourself with a much more generous compensation and benefit package in a hurry. As a proud steward of SEIU Local 721, I can assure you that there are numerous benefits to being a Union member. Why not open your mind a little, and while you're doing that, consider, as another thread on this board suggested not too long ago, that the CMs who make your Disney Dreams come true are equally entitled to Dreams of their own? And finally, because I can't resist saying it, if the people whose vacations are being disrupted are anything like you, I know that I won't lose any sleep over it.

I don't know any part timers around here who get health benefits and we have always had to pay half of our own health care for full time!

If the jobs at the other hotels pay so much better - why not go work there? I imagine it is b/c there are other perks they get working for Disney that they like!

I couldn't agree more with this statement. America gives you the opportunity to pursue happiness...you must go after it, follow your heart, and, perhaps, your pocket book. If you do not like how your employer is treating you, seek employment else where. If you cannot find employment elsewhere, then you are obviously making the wage/benefit pkg that the market will bear. Be happy you have that job at all. Jobs are just like anything else in a capitalist society. Employers will pay what they must to get the employees that they need to operate a successful business. If there are 1000 jobs and only 500 people qualified to perform that job, then the pay/benefits will be higher. If there are 1000 jobs and 10,000 people who can perform the job, then the pay/benefits will be substantially lower. Lets be honest here, it does not take a rocket scientist to make a bed, clean a toilet, bake a cake, or take my bags upstairs. If you have chosen to follow a path in life that leaves you making beds at 50 years of age, I am sorry, but it is the path you CHOSE. My only expectation of Disney, and all other hotels, is to pay their staff enough to ensure they will not be stealing from guests, or monitor sufficiently to guarantee it.

Entitlement so irritates me.

I do get fully paid health insurance in my job, but I work full time, not part-time. I am not sure how much longer that will last as health insurance costs continue to jump by leaps and bounds.

And while I do support unions and their efforts to improve workers' lives, I don't think this belligerent approach is going to recruit anyone else to that position :rolleyes1

Yes, I'll be sure to do all these things....as I am a housewife. I'll get right on that....haha.

Oh, and none of those employees are making my disney dreams come true. I stay offsite. Always have.

Me too!!! Let's unite for better pay and vacation - my husband would so not be amused!!

i wouldn't call them smarter just because they belong to a worker's union which is not available for my job & i wouldn't join it if it was. my personal opinion is that these unions would rather have 1000 people picketing and not working than negotiate a fair settlement for themselves. as far as "bringing everyone down," i was just stating my opinion to which i am entitled. i personally feel that this particular group has gone to far, protesting in front of a family tourist destination in character costume. would you like to have to explain to your child why cinderella is being taken away by police????
