Ciao Mickey, This is NOT Disney. The real Europe visited...8/16 - Day 9.11 & 9.12

This day found us going out for a full day tour. I was really excited to see some of the sites and we were on our way. This time Lorraine chose to sit with Vinny.

We were on our way.

We passed this monastery. I believe it is still an open and working monastery.

Then we were on the open road.

Now our guide met up with another local guide and she walked us through the streets. We were in Siena and heading towards our meeting place for later. The guide we had was great. I know I spoke to her but not sure if it was going there or going back to the bus. I think it was going back. Anyway we were heading to the area.

These flags in the pic were all over the place. Here is a link to some information on the area.

I thought this flag was cute.

Now we came upon Palazzo Salimbeni which houses the oldest bank in the world. Here is a link to some information. Info below taken from italy guides.

Piazza Salimbeni (Salimbeni Square)
The current square is the result of heavy restoration carried out at the end of the 800s by the architect Giuseppe Partini, that altered its general image, building on and adding new structures, in the neo-gothic style of the time.
At the back of the square, essentially extracted from the garden of the adjacent Palazzo Spannocchi, the ninth century façade (by Partini) of the Salimberi Fortress stands out. It is one of the most imposing, complex and strengthened fortresses of medieval Siena, and the home of the great Salimbeni family until they were hunted from Siena and their possessions confiscated (in 1419).
The fortress then passed to the Council and finally, in 1866, it was sold to Monte dei Paschi, of whom it is said, decided to restore it. At the centre of the square is the monument to Sallustio Bandini, the work of Tito Sarrochi, in 1880. Today the whole square, reorganised by a recent restoration (1963-72), houses various buildings from the thirteenth century: towers, a fortress, the Fondaco of the Salimbeni, and the small palace of Ranieri Salimbeni.
The fortress hosts a notable collection of works of art, that is widening thanks to the same Monte dei Paschi: amongst others, there are masterpieces by Sassetta, Pietro Lorenzetti and Beccafumi. In addition to the Archivio Storico, the collection is a precious witness to the economic history of Siena.

I think I will stop here.

Up next,

Walking and a piazza...

So glad to hear you visited Siena. My most favorite city in the world ...so far!

What gorgeous pictures so far of your day tour. The drive out is stunning and Siena looks so pretty.

And yes....I'm on a plane to Italy!! You meeting me there with camera in hand? :rotfl:

Disney has you follow a while glove sign in tours....Italy has you follow a creepy upside down black skeleton. :lmao:

I was hideously behind but oh, really enjoyed seeing all your Venice updates at once. I haven't been there in decades and it really really made me want to go back! Good for you for going back to a restaurant you liked, regardless of the reviews. Hotel looked darling and well located.

Do not feel bad about the trains, we had a couple of mishaps in Italy, one was apparently my fault (we missed a turn to the airport and as a dyslexic I'm a rather spotty navigator especially when I don't know I'm supposed to be the navigator) so missed our train and had a similar long wait. Your wait looked well spent at least, much better than sitting at the station for 4 hours! We also almost missed a platform change but luckily I could understand enough in Italian to clue in and we were able to move quickly enough to still make it.

Like the Italian mickey shirt!

Loving Florence, such a beautiful city. We stuggled with photos of the Duomo, it's just so darn BIG! LOL. Tuscany has a huge part of my heart and Siena is just lovely!

YAY for coast to coast and starting to make plans.

I don't think that I mentioned it before but I love all of the doors on the buildings. They are as detailed as the rest of the building and are just so pretty to me. I know that you were glad that you went to see the Duomo lit up in the evening. It's gorgeous!

It sounds like your tour is off to a great start.

Wow, Siena is lovely from your tour pictures, Scott. Nice job. :thumbsup2

I just love all of the statues, and I'm confused about the upside down skeleton as your "flag" to follow the leader.

And you may have missed it, but we miss each other by two weeks in October. :(

It wasn't a long visit and did not see a lot but we did and hopefully one day will go back to see the rest. :thumbsup2

The drive was so pretty and I sat in the front seat so I had a good view.
:thumbsup2 On my way.

:lmao: I think it turned into an umbrella. I thought it was cute.

I know the feeling all too well. I want to go to Venice again now and it has only been months for me. You should go back and visit. The hotel was fantastic.

:thumbsup2 The wait actually turned out to be nice being we saw the lovely church and then a stroll and coffee. :thumbsup2

Like the Italian mickey shirt!
Thanks.

:lmao: it is really large to photograph. I am now saving Amazon cards for a fisheye lens.

YAY for coast to coast and starting to make plans.
:cool1::yay:

The Upside-down flag is funny :lmao:
:)

I did too. There were some massive and looked so heavy and others that just looked old and worn.
it was off to a great start.

it was and thank you.
It was actually an umbrella but that was the cover she had on it.
 that stinks.

When you visit again, be sure to stop at the San Domenico church where you will find the head of St. Catherine, one of Europe's 6 Patron Saints! Very unusual indeed.... In case you need to know -the rest of her body is entombed nearby the Pantheon in Rome.

We walked along and soon we were in the Piazza del Campo. This area was beautiful. We didn’t stay here too long but I did manage a few pics. :) Here is some information on the area.

Closer pic of the entrance I mentioned earlier. I don’t think it was an open entrance as I remember people entered next to it. I might do that later.

Loved this.
15688123032_af9aff8002_c.jpg

15501135108_3a7302ec49_c.jpg

Not sure? LOL.
15686517485_b5422976b1_c.jpg

Then we were walking through here. I think she mentioned something about birthdays but I honestly cannot remember. Too much information to remember. LOL.
15500663009_80edb9ebb0_c.jpg

When I got up there there was a gate.
15500661929_df692cf9ca_c.jpg

Then I stuck the camera through the gate.
15684598851_48a86d2990_c.jpg

Then I looked back at where we came from. I loved the little alleyways.
15067151853_e024e5769d_c.jpg

Then we were walking again and were going through this tunnel. It was so pretty all lit up.
15500658169_cd8f2c3532_c.jpg

And with that last image I think I will stop.

Up next,

We reach another church...

When you visit again, be sure to stop at the San Domenico church where you will find the head of St. Catherine, one of Europe's 6 Patron Saints! Very unusual indeed.... In case you need to know -the rest of her body is entombed nearby the Pantheon in Rome.

I will keep that in mind. :thumbsup2 Thanks. oh that was the church I photographed. It looked beautiful from the outside.

I have to agree with you, Scott, the architecture is beautiful. So m any beautiful churches. And that entrance does look very interesting.

Gorgeous!

That picture....is that one of the original aquaduct or sewerage system that the ancient Romes had? Do you know that it was the Etruscans that first developed it and that the Romans stole the idea for their own???

Here is what we had to follow. LOL.
15684480091_686028b430_c.jpg

.

:lmao: That's actually pretty funny!

I am amazed at all the statues. What's up with the one at the beginning with the lady with the stone on her head? No wonder her arm broke off. :rolleyes1

I also continue to be amazed at all the architecture. And the dogs on the building and gate - very cool!

You got such a nice variety of pictures. All those little alley ways are neat.

I will keep that in mind. :thumbsup2 Thanks. oh that was the church I photographed. It looked beautiful from the outside.

Yes it is ... the lower level of the church:

We were lucky enough to catch a Sunday Mass while we were there. We're not super religious, but when we travel we always try to catch a service somewhere.

That would make sense of what it was. I figured it was a sewage drain of some kind. :thumbsup2

Up next,

We go inside...

Wow...what a gorgeous church. Thanks for all those pictures.

What were some of the no-no's on the sign by the entrance. I got the no smoking, no cell phone, no hat, no pets, etc.. What was the one of the woman? No short dresses?

I can't wait to see the inside of the church.
