as i was cleaning out my ds6 school folder there was a flier inside for a halloween party
i called the school to ask about the party as i had heard nothing about it
i should have read it all the way down its at a local church
i didnt think the school should be sending home stuff from churches
if they let this group do it then they will have to let others as well
the party is in no way affiliated with the school
it is a church party
im really surprised the school would allow this

Ah, nothing like living in the Land of the Politically Correct. ;)

Did it come from the school or did a student pass them out?
Either way, does it really matter? If you don't agree with the flyer then just throw it out. Nothing to get upset about IMHO.

Actually that is kind of the thing. If they are going to let the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts do it, if they are going to let the Little League, Community Theatre Workshop, and Park District Soccer League do it, if they are going to let the town library and local United Way Camp District do it --

if all those places are going to be allowed to send home approved flyers advertising their events

Then everybody else has to have the same opportunities, including local churches.

Most school boards require those to be submitted for approval pretty far in advance and there are guidelines on what is allowed on the flyer.

Or, maybe a friend was passing them out. :confused3

Is it really from the school? Maybe a student was handing the flyers out.

Anyway, I think the are more important things to worry about.

When I was in grade school we had santa and the easter bunny come to class, played with dreidels, made dream catchers, and pledged to the flag - none of which is allowed in schools today. It's has just gotten ridiculous.

When you called the school, did they know about the party and acknowledge that the school handed out the flier? I agree, churches should not be allowed to "advertise" at a school.

The question is now, what is advertising? After all Coke, Pepsi, Pizza Hut etc. and others have identity in school, but at the same time they supply products, services and/or sponsorship at the school...what does the church provide?

My dd gets these from time to time. On every extra curricular announcement the school hands out is a stamp on the bottom of the flyer stating that it's not a school related function and that it's not endorsed, or something to that effect. It's not a big deal. Just toss it if you aren't interested.

Just round file it. At least it was listed as a church flier unlike another situation that was discussed here recently.

Maybe they should stop the practice all together.

If this goes on often, I'm surprised it's allowed. I can't imagine people who go to one church are happy to see there kid solicited to go to another.

As others have mentioned, if the school allows any group that isn't associated with the school to hand things out, they have to allow churches to hand things out, too. I'm glad that they're still allowed to. If you don't your son to attend, don't take him.

If it were of a religious nature I would question it. However, in our town there are non- religious activities all the time at the church, because they have a huge open area for large functions.

we can here, but it has to state "THIS IS NOT A SCHOOL SPONSORED EVENT"....use to do it all the time with my Rec Dept stuff

Have you asked your child if a friend gave him the invite? That wasn't mentioned so, I'm asking.

Perhaps there isn't any backdoor recruiting at all--but an ecumenical event provided as a safe alternative.

Not every church function is planned to boost numbers. But rather--to provide something for the community at large.
