Chubby Kids...

I've heard of this, too. And you always think of their culture somewhat revolving around food. I'm guessing it has to do with eating the right kinds of food and portion control. We have such a skewed view on eating here, it is insane! It's either don't eat at all and look like a skeleton, or eat for comfort because you don't....
I think that's much of it. I remember people in Europe eating only small servings of meat and really much less of everything. I understand that the popularity of fast food chains is growing though and I wonder how much impact that will have?

Speaking of fast food, why do we always want the bigger burger and the big fries? We could easily eat a small burger and one of the healthier side dishes but people just go for the worst stuff. :confused3

When I did WW a few years back, the recommendation was that if you absolutely must have McD's or Burger King-buy the kids meal! You'll still get the taste of the stuff you're craving, but not the weeks worth of calories you get in one of the adult meals.

Well, my husband swears that any McDonald's restaurant smells like sweaty armpits and genitals, so I lose my appetite for their burgers (or any food, actually) after I catch a whiff.

:scared:

Well, I think you just helped my diet, so Thanks! :thumbsup2

I am sure this is a hot button topic. But with all the discussions on eating. I am wondering.

It really really bothers me though, to see a Chubby Kid. Obviously, it's not the child's fault, and i relate to that kid..b/c life isn't easy for a big kid. I have been there.
But, I get enraged toward the parent.
B/c that 6 year old isn't fixing his own meals. That 10 year old CAN be told NO! And the sweets and JUNK can be left out of the house.

How could you set up such an unhealthy eating situation for your child that they are left being made fun of, walking instead of running and set up for a life with disease and so many unhealthy aspects.

=(

I'm harsh on this one - if a parent has obese kids, for no MEDICAL reason, other than giving them and letting them eat the wrong foods and not having enough exercise ....

to me thats ABUSE! and let me make clear I dont judge anyone with overweight kids - I'm talking about the millions of them out there where the obesity is purely caused by their diet and lifestyle as chosen for them by their parents.

its all about balance, there are no candies in my house, my kids are allowed ice cream after their school lunch, they dont drink any soda's, theres no chocolate in my house, but they are allowed cookies (couple a day), and their meals generally contain pasta, veggies and meat or fish or eggs. We have no video games in the house for them to watch comatose, but they are allowed an hour of TV a day (they're 4 and 6 right now) but the rest of the time is playing time, doing something either with the mind or body.

Once your kids are overweight health problems occur, image problems occur and its a sentence to them ..... how many overweight kids ever slim down into their teen years - not alot, most just get bigger.

Its irresponsible, its lazy, and you're setting them up for a big fall.

Fast food isn't my problem, it's just eating out in restaurants period. Serving sizes are so big and the lite menu is usually so unappealing to me. I'm trying to make a new rule of only eating out on weekends, so that should help my husband and I a whole lot.

But yes, I'd be interested in seeing the impact that fast food restaurants have on other countries. I hope they're smarter about it than we've been.

I won't blame video games especially now that the Wii is so popular. DS plays a lot of video games however he's also very active and into a sport. He's in great shape.

I think that the overweight problem is due to a lot of factors. Many of us need to move more and try to control our portions. I'm guilty of inactivity and it's something that's hard to change once you get into habits.

I always order off the kids menu when we eat fast food although that is very rare for us. A basic cheeseburger and small fry is plenty and does not take up your whole day's worth of fat/calories. I never let the kids get soda, that is a special treat for birthday parties. They order milk or a water bottle. I loved that McD's offered apple slices b/c the kids loved them but now DD is allergic to apples. :sad1:

I am so right there with you! I got a card in the mail yesterday from my THIN friend and her THIN DH and there were pictures in there of their extremely obese 10 and 12 year olds. When the 10 year old was 2..TWO, she was 66 pounds already. These two had TVs with VCRs in their rooms when they were infants and spent a lot of time in there. I hated going over there, she did nothing with them, but make them stay in their rooms watching Barney all day. And to see these pictures, I about cried! The last time I saw pictures of them they were 5 and 7 and were super chubby then. Now they are HUGE!!! They have to be easily 200 and more.

Not to be snarky or anything (okay maybe a little), but what about when you see obese parents with thin/normal children?

Are they good parents then? Do they get a pass? Or are they still lousy people for being obese themselves?

I've been wondering that through this whole thread.

Well I am obese, my kids are not. I work VERY hard at keeping them that way. From day one I have had their diets as WHOLE foods as I can...meaning fish, chicken breast, fresh fruits and veggies, we eat whole grain breads, pasta and rice. I limit processed foods. My friends think I am terrible because my kids have never had pop tarts, lunchables, etc. They don't need that crap. My kids take PB on whole grain bread, baby carrots, fresh fruit, organic milk for their lunches to school! I keep them SUPER active, it is sports sports sports around here and they love it!! I knew going into being a parent...after 16 years as a fully time nanny and seeing how parents were with feeding their kids, that I was going to do all I could to make sure they weren't fat couch potato kids.

I am a lousy person for being obese I guess. :confused3 I have always been overweight...my parents are NOT....my siblings are! Why are we fat, who knows. Our grandparents were always heavy too. I eat the way my kids do! While I don't excersise, I am on the go all the time.

This thread is sickening. Not only because there are thin people here who judge and condemn fat people, but also because there are fat people here who are doing the same. It shows how fat-hatred is so ingrained, so prevalent and it is disgusting. Why judge anybody, let alone people you don't know? Especially because of something as unimportant as appearance.

And why should we judge ourselves so harshly? We are all made in the likeness of almighty God, and this precious span of years that God has given us on this earth, why should we waste it worrying about fatness? It is ridiculous.

I totally agree with SteveInBrooklyn & I'm totally amazed that he's still here after the election!:thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

Steve should actually read some of the posts and not read his own insecurities into all of them, and maybe he'd see that everyone is not being as mean and nasty as he assumes.

Because Almighty God gave us our bodies and we should WANT to keep them healthy in thanksgiving!

If people did that, we would have far fewer health problems and no need for health care "reform".

How do you know about Steve's insecurities?
Are you his shrink or something?
I agree with him on this so does that mean I'm insecure about my weight?
I've never had weight issues & neither have my husband or kids so I don't know what my problem is?!:confused3
Maybe you could fill me in?:worship:

And you are free to do so, but why judge others who don't? And why judge yourself if you can no longer keep your physique at the peak of physical perfection? Don't you think that is a waste of time and energy? Don't you think it is an indication of how shallow and anti-intellectual we've become?

So keep your body healthy all you want but don't worry about what's going on with people that you "saw in walmart, that were chubby"

The part about health care reform is BS, sorry but no matter how thin people are you still have a need for the government to address health care!
