Christmas trees and cats

Let me tell you, I am dreading our tree this year because we now have a kitten in the house. Our older cat didn't bother the tree too much last year, but did manage to chew on one of the bulbs.. ruined that one. We usually put our tree up the weekend after thanksgiving, but since we are leaving for WDW on 12/3, will put it up later. I agree with the posters about not putting anything breakable on the tree, and securing it to a hook in the wall or ceiling, so that the cats can't knock it over. Also, no garland or tinsle on it.. cats love to chew on that stuff!

GREAT thread!! I have two adult cats ....they will be fine....but this year I have 3 kittens (don't ask  ) who will be five months old when the tree goes up. Great suggestion about the cayenne!!
I have a few trees in the house during the holidays. Any irreplacable ornaments go on the tree in the room that has french doors that I can close and keep the breakables out of harm's way! I'll be anchoring the main tree with fishing line too!

Hey!!! Might be a good time to buy stock in fishing line!! :teeth:

We have a bunch of Hallmark lights and motion ornaments. The tree sounds like a truck starting up when I crank them all on (I wire them to a wall switch controlled outlet). First year we had kitty, she went nosing around the tree and

I hit the ornament switch. All that noise and activity and she went

 These are great ideas! Wow! 3 kitties?! I did well to convince DH that we needed 2 so they wouldn't be lonesome! I have never owned siblings before, and these are the funnies kittens I have ever had! Maybe it is because I no longer have a "baby" but these guys are as amusing and a lot less trouble...I think!;)

I had a 8 month old kitten last year and a 1 and a half yr cat. They were both monsters. I would go to sleep and by morning every ornament was on the floor every day. I foolishly had breakable ornaments that broke. I had the ornaments wraped in string and that took me months to clean up. They chewed the wires to the lights and I was afraid they would get electrictuted. They knocked the tree doen twice. I hope this year is better. Makes me want to put it up the day before Christmas and take it down the day after.

I think I am going to have to try the fishing wire trick that is an awesome idea especially since Winnie will be 6 months old. ;-)
We have an older cat Ashley that we got right before Christmas 3 years ago (she was 4 years old at the time) and the day after Christmas she actually dismantled the tree!! We put the branches back and she promtly did it again as in saying" ok Christmas is over now take the thing down!" First time in years I took my tree down before New years! ;-)

We don't really have to many problems with the cats and the tree. We hang non breakable ornaments on the bottom so they can play with those and that seems to make them happy. We also have a couple of ornaments that are bells so if someone climbs we know. We have 5 cats and have never had a probelm with ornaments being broken even when one did climb the tree.
