Christmas tree preference

Do you prefer your tree with matching ornaments or more personalized?

Our tree is a mix of ornaments from our travels, homemade ones, inherited ones and gifted ones.

Other homes I’ve been in the tree is decorated with matched ribbon/baubles with nothing personal on it. Pretty but so impersonal.

How about yours?

Do you prefer your tree with matching ornaments or more personalized?

We have enough ornaments to decorate at least three or four 6-7 foot trees. Every year I try to vary which boxes we bring down from the attic to decorate.

Most of the time I'll start with the basic "regular" bulb ornaments and fill in with either Hallmark, Disney, Star Trek/Wars, John Deere, Barbie, kid-made church/scouting or other themed ornaments. We also have some vintage glass ornaments from my husband's family (including some handmade ones) that I've used on occasion.

Just as an aside, the ugliest Christmas tree I've had in my life was the year my mother decided that all the decorations would be green. Green ornaments, green lights, green garland --- just BAD.....

I have 4 trees.

3 are matching colour schemes,
Family room is burgundy , gold and green.

Living room is golds in different shape ornaments with Gold Star and ribbon.

Hallway upstairs on second floor is also gold but mostly angels on that on and smaller tree.

Basement one is a mix of Hallmark ornaments , stuff with names on them, and a lot of bears and stuff toys.

My tree has a lot of the Disney ornaments I've bought over the years on trips to WDW, mostly The ones shaped like Mickey, like this one:

I also have many ornaments that were on the tree when I was a kid. After my Mom's death my sister and I divided them between us. The tree is really mix and match. I have my Mom's tree topper from the first Christmas after she and my Dad were married, 1965. It's not the best-looking angel you ever saw, but she gets a place on the tree:

I try to pull it all together with icicles and snowflakes. Not too successfully, but it's a tree full of love and good memories so it doesn't matter.

It’s mostly a mix of Hallmark and Disney ornaments with a few odd pieces here and there. The ornaments our parents used are packed up in the basement. We just didn’t have the heart to use them after they passed away. The majority of the ornaments are color coordinated with the tree skirt, wreath and stockings.

Can I say a mix of both? I've been doing our tree the exact same way for years so there's definitely a colour theme and particular way I put the ornaments on, which are almost all a matching style/type I bought specifically for a certain look. Then there are a decent number of feature pieces; the special ornaments that have been souvenirs or gifts over the years and the precious ones DS made as a child. They go on in specific spots to showcase them.

The whole thing comes together just the way I want it to. Luckily this requires no "control-freakiness" on my part because neither DH or DS cares overly-much about helping with the decorating. We used to do the tree together as a fun family thing years ago when DS was little but not for quite a long time now.

I did a first....my 4 and 5 year old grandkids decorated our tree. Talk about a hodgepodge of various ornaments but we love it. It's only a 3 foot tree but it's beautiful.

Yes I tend to put some ornaments in the same place on the trees.

We used to do it as a family too now it is just me. Maybe some day I will cut down but for now I love decorating for Christmas. Heck I change out my shower curtains in both bathrooms. Each bed has a Christmas duvet. Every room is touched by Christmas.

Nothing wrong with that!! When we moved to our current home, I found there was absolutely not one single space in the entire place that would accommodate our 7' tree. I bought a high-quality potted 4-footer that sits perfectly on top of a credenza in our living room. It's just perfect and I don't miss the big one at all.

Our living room tree is our formal tree - white and red lights with large gold poinsettias and red, gold, white & silver ornaments with gold garland - this tree is beautiful.

Our family room tree is our fun tree - multicolor lights and ornaments from vacations, ones the girls made in school and then lots & lots of other fun ornaments - this tree is a tree full of memories and fun to look at.

Exactly this, we decorated out tree last night. Sitting back and watching my two kids take out all of the ornaments and ask where we got this one or what it represents made me tear up. This is also my first Christmas in a house I own and the first Christmas without my Grandmother, whose house I spent 37 of my 41 Christmas mornings at

Our Christmas Tree is decorated by a collection of mementos from places we've been (about 50% Disney related) and things I love wrapped in colorful blinking lights and candy canes. We put it up today with all the other decorations while watching Scrooged and The Christmas Clause.

We have 5 fully decorated trees, & I do both.

The one in our living room has clear lights & is beach-themed w/ coastal ornaments & an overall color scheme of teal, gold, & natural elements. It’s decorated w/ gold ribbon, teal & white plaid ribbon, 3-strand nautical rope, & raffia.

The one in our kitchen has clear lights & is gingerbread & candy-themed w/ gingerbread & Christmas candy ornaments & an overall color scheme of red, light green, & brown (gingerbread). It’s decorated w/ red & white candy cane ribbon & red, white, & light green plaid ribbon.

The one in our family room has multi-colored lights & is, if I had to give it a theme, “memories” themed. It has all our collected ornaments from over the years - vacations, momentous occasions, Hallmark keepsake ornaments, ornaments w/ special meanings or memories, vintage ornaments (I have a few ornaments from my parents’ 1st Christmas tree), the kids’ special ornaments we give them each Christmas, the special ornaments from each year of our marriage, etc. At Christmas time, our family room is decorated w/ Santas & reindeers, so the tree has a thick, red yarn-like garland, a ribbon w/ reindeer on it, & a red, white, & green plaid ribbon.

The kids have trees in their bedrooms as well w/ multi-colored lights & which are decorated w/ ornaments they’ve made & have been given over the years.

We also have a small tree in our foyer w/ clear lights. It’s just decorated simply w/ wooden anchors spray-painted gold.

And we have a tree in our bedroom w/ clear lights. As a gift to myself, it’s not decorated, & I just enjoy the lights.
