How did you decide what Christmas Stockings to get? We have been stocking-less since DH and I married. We eat have a stocking a my parents house where we usually spend Christmas but now with DS1 and DS2 on the way I should probably see about getting us some Christmas Stockings at the house. I literally have ONE Mickey stocking from years ago when I was single.

So how do you decide? Does it match your holiday decorating theme? Are they simple with your names on them? Are they Disney? Are they themed to each individuals hobbies (and then do you change them if the hobbies change?) I am seriously overwhelmed and don't know where to start with getting our family Christmas stockings.

The ones I grew up with where knitted (not sure if they were bought that way or made at one point, have to ask my mother!) and super Long but very narrow. I'd like just normal sized ones for our family but I have no idea what "style" or design to get!!

We each picked one we like. They don't match each other and don't really match the decor. Each person just gets to pick the one they like best in the store that way it feels personal to them.

But my sister makes some of the most amazing stockings I have ever seen - any color or theme choice. She did ones for my boys that are jungle and leather. They are big and they have pockets in the front to stuff full of all sorts of fun stuff from Santa. Here are some pictures on her website of what she does...

mine was knitted when I was born and has my name on it... and then when each family member came into play a new one was knitted. I have a decoration one that was made my the other side of the family and we have one from my daughters side of the family too. I guess if I had to buy one I would scope out people that could make one by hand..... and if that couldn't happen I would go for a higher class store so that it will last.

Well I buy them to fit the personality of the person.
Here's what we have: DD1 (17) looks like a girl pirate boot and says "Pirate Princess" We bought this in Disney and it's SO HER!!
DS (14) has a camo stocking. He's not as much into the camo as he used to be but he's cool with it
DD2 (11) Pink Belle Stocking - her fav princess!
DH - Marine Corps stocking - because he's a former Marine (that one was esy, huh? :rotfl: )
and me - I have a deep blue plush with silver sparkles- because I like sparkly things!!

We've all had different stockings over the years. For us it's fun to change them up once in awhile. I still have all the others, including all the Baby's First Christmas ones.

Have a great Christmas!!

I bought mine and DH's before we were even married (living in sin!!!) and when DD was born, I couldn't find one that even remotely matched it, so I made one that is similar. It's not the same, but they all have a santa scene on the front and a red back and are quilted and BIG.

I guess I'll have to find the old pattern I made and make a second one for our new baby next year!

I made them for each of us. I used a stocking my mom made as a pattern, and made them out of felt. To decorate them, I found simple Christmas pictures in coloring books, and cut them out of felt. Very simple, but very cute. Here they are:

I just ended getting what the store had at the time. I never had a stocking as a kid so I didn't have anything to go by. For my own kids, at the time we had 3 so those are matching. The next 2 dc that came along have similiar but not the same as the first 3. 1 is even a little bigger and 1 is a tad smaller than the first 3. They are cute though, xmas design on all and made of felt.

CONGRATS ON ds1 and ds2!!:banana::banana:

Target---All Red Velvet with Silver Initials. Love them!! They hang by silver snowflakes. I like them to match our decor.:santa:

When I started for our family, I wanted something traditional in style that we could use forever. I settled on needlepoint (I made DH's when we were first married and then bought the rest) rather than going with something trendy or themed.

Growing up we had handmade felt ones much like those Glynis posted (everyone's was red but the appliques were all different).

My aunt made DH and I each one for our first Christmas. She also made a matching tree skirt. She bought the "Fabric" at the fabric store--you buy a yard of this fabric and it has the front and back of the stocking on it--she lined them and added lace and wrote our names on them. I found similar ones for the kids. I made 2 of them when DS17 was a baby "thinking ahead". I was lucky enough to find a 3rd when we found out baby number 2 was twins :lmao:.

Dh has his own that was knitted for him when he was a baby. Since I can't knit I decided to get the rest of us needlepoint stockings embroidered with our names. I wanted to have something that my kids would have into their adulthood.

When I was pregnant with DS (30 years ago) a woman I knew knitted stockings and sold them. I bought three (one for each of us).
It was all good til DD came along 7 years later. Couldn't find the lady and couldn't match the stockings. My Mom crocheted a stocking for DD.
Now we have DDIL and a new baby coming. So nothing "matches" any more.

I guess just find ones you like and pick up 4 of them?

I saw some nice ones at Land's End that are Needlepoint. I'll have to keep an eye on the end of the season stuff to get some for next year.

I'd like more of a classic look I think, not necessarily matching decor but not themed or trendy. Something the kids can take with them when they are adults as opposed to a Cars one for DS this year or something!

Thanks! I love hearing what other's do.

I love my kids stockings, a generous size, one is maroon velvet with hunter green trim and the other is the opposite. DD has the red one, DS has the green one, but they go together.

Just don't go too big-you have to fill those suckers each year and it gets harder (more expensive) as they get older!

I'm fairly crafty so I made ours. They do not match; each design was done to fit the person. My husband and mine are counted cross stitch but the kids are needlepoint. They are all lined and they have held up well over the years (they are over 20 years old). The only one I really don't like is mine.

These are the stockings we've used for over twenty years.

Before our youngest daughter was born I bought two longer striped stockings, for my husband and me, and two shorter ones, for our two kids.

Six and half years later, our third child was born. I didn't think I'd be able to find a stocking that would match the others, but fortunately I did. If you look closely, however, you'll notice that the stripes on her stocking (the last one on the left) are actually a little bit wider than on the other stockings.:)

I can't remember where I bought the stockings, but they've held up very well over the years. We also hung a special Baby's First Christmas stocking for each child's first Christmas.

We have needlepoint ones from Landsend that are monogrammed with our names on them...

I don't sew much, but I did do our Christmas stockings. Each of us has a different fabric. DH's is red and green plain with gold trim and bells attached, mine is poinsettia with lace, one son has snowmen and the other has reindeer - they both have a little stuffed figurine attached. They are simple, but quite nice. It'll be easy to make more if I decide to do stockings as they marry and have kids.
