we have the pickle but don't do the tradition of the extra gift. granted, I only have one child who is only 22 months and its not been an issue. twins due in april, but still, it will be a few years I would think before I really have to decide.
we also have a spider on our tree, another tradition.
the spider tradition isn't about gifts, though, but its a lovely story. Brief version:
There was a housewife in Germany who worked very hard cleaning her house to ready for the christ child's visit/birthday. She cleaned upstairs and down, chasing all the spiders up to the attic. The spiders were excited for christmas, too, and wanted to see the beautiful christmas tree. On christmas eve when all were asleep they crawled down from the attic and went to look at the tree. Crawling all over the tree left webs all over it. When the christ child came that night he noticed what the spiders had done, and knew how hard the housewife had worked to make things perfect for him. He changed the webs to silver, so they sparkled and made the tree even more beautiful.
some people believe tinsel or silver garland stems from this story. We don't do tinsel, but do have a silver beautiful spider and web.
I just love ornaments that have a story behind them! Also, I've always known this story using the christ child as the visitor, but I've also heard it using santa claus.
