we were all encouraged to bring our kids. at 9 they started serving breakfast -- freshly made omlets and waffles, bacon, sausage, has browns, bagels, muffins, fruit, etc. after breakfast there were arts & crafts projects in the conference room, and the kids all posed with Santa by the tree and each got a present (my dd's got mini am/fm radios) and a candy cane. next there was carolling (a parody song about the office, followed by Frosty, Rudolph and Jingle Bells). finally the grown ups had their secret santa exchange. I got a box of Godiva chocolate. (gee, how did they know?) by noon it was time to go home.
we walked past Ground Zero on the way to the subway. I showed the girls the pit, the cross and the flag, and the Christmas tree that will probably become a tradition at that spot. we took a brief look at the memorials on the fence of St. Paul's. younger dd gave some money to a street musician playing the national anthem. we didn't linger, but I wanted them to see and to know.
