Christmas for 15 as told by the planner

Fantasyland is undergoing a major refurb that won't be complete until I think 2012... they are adding some new attractions and revamping pretty much everything. Here is a link...

Wow, that is a lot. I knew it was being re-done, but I didn't read all the details. That would be so nice to have Dumbo twice as large. I wonder if it'll still be one 'ride' or if there will be two that are just basically exactly the same. Hopefully my kids will actually want to even check out that area the next time we head back there. Of course, I have no idea when that will be...

yeah for getting the CP package you wanted!! i have Teppan Edo on my to do list!

and glad you got Le Cellier too. i am sure it would be hard to get by next week. all those cancelled ADRs are probably going fast this week.

yeah, the Fantasyland expansion is pretty major, but should overall have a minimal impact. BUT, you will see a HUGE construction wall up all the way basically probably from Pinnochio's quick service, or back by those bathrooms all the way towards toon town. no the prettiest, but they have to do something to keep working. Toontown should be open until the end of the year, but rumors are that they will close it next year- so be sure and get your toon town fix, it will probably go away permanently early next year. They are also closing the train maybe for a bit, but don't know when. And since the mgmt change, they are reconsidering the original expansion plans and probably adapting them a bit, so who really knows. lol- but for now, all rides should be open, you will just see more construction walls around.

I'm glad, too!!!
Starting when my older sister was in HS, my family hosted about 6 girls from Japan through our HS foreign exchange program. My 2 sisters and I and our mom have all traveled over there as well. So I've always wanted to visit the Japanese restaurants at Epcot during a Disney trip. In 2007, I had my ADR, but then they closed it for refurb! I was so  and :sad2:. We were moved to Garden Grill, which was great, and even got passes for the special Illuminations viewing area. But, I've been looking forward to this for years!
I've always heard great things about Le Cellier, but thought with my young kid(s), that I would just wait until they could act a little nicer not only so that we could really enjoy the meal, but for other patrons as well. But, with this change of going to 2 TS, I don't think I would be as likely to try it. Since we have Ohana, Crystal Palace and Akershus, I think that doing LC instead of GG will work out ok.
I know we will be spending a lot of time in Fantasyland. We'll certainly visit Toontown, but I don't feel like we need to spend a lot of time there even if it is going away. There's just so much more to do! :goodvibes

One last note: Ever since I got hyperemesis  with my first (and again with my second) pregnancy, I've had issues with motion sickness. I can't even sit and swing without feeling sick. Luckily I can handle cars fine, but everything else is iffy. It wasn't too bad back in 07, but we also didn't do much in the way of big rides since our DS was only 2.5. I am really looking forward to experiencing more rides this time and I am researching the best ways to fight off the motion sickness. Tonight I will take a dose of Dramamine. Tomorrow we go to the state fair and I will attempt to ride at least the carousel. I hope it works so I will know if it works before I stock up on it for our December trip! :santa:
Here's hoping tomorrow goes smoothly! pixiedust:

Wow that would be rough! I hope the dramamine works for you! If not maybe a doctor could prescribe something?

we alwasy worried about bringing our son to LC this last trip and we planned to, but actually hired an in room sitter instead. we had used 'kids night out' earlier in the trip for the 3 kids (mine and my sister's 2) and they LOVED it. the sitter brings toys, books etc. STays in the room the whole time. So we liked it so much, we booked it again last minute so we could enjoy LC in peace. However, we are taking our son this time. LC, while a bit more upscale, it still filled with all of us in t-shirts and shorts and strollers and kids. So don't worry about that, it is filled iwht children and not all are well-behaved, lol (sometimes mine!!) :rotfl::confused3 But what i do hate there is how close together the tables are.

sorry to hear about the hypermesis- i haven't had it, but i had severe MS, not throwing up all the time to the point of hypermesis, but feeling like i had to all the time and couldn't. it was miserable! sorry you have motion problems now too- try the dram, and maybe the seabands toO?

After the first pregnancy, everyone says "each one is different...", but the second one was even worse :scared1:. So, there will not be a third. ;)

Well, the trip to the fair was pretty good, but I only rode the ferris wheel. It was ok, but I'm not totally sold on the Dramamine. I actually visited the doc on Friday because of my daughter's skin rash (which turned out to be eczema. :sad2:) I asked him about taking Dramamine or if there was anything else, and he gave me a prescription for the patch that goes behind your ear for 3 days.
I still have my seabands from when I tried them for the hyperemesis so, I will have all 3 things with me in December and hope they work!

Thank you for the info! We will just bring the kids and enjoy ourselves. Maybe we'll try the sitter thing someday when we try Artist Point or Victoria & Albert's or something. :goodvibes

I just noticed today is my double-digits day!! :yay::woohoo::banana:
I'm so excited!! The weather has really been getting cool up here in MN, so it's feeling like it's getting closer and closer to December!

Ooohh, and I ordered a 6 day park hopper from UT for grandma and already received it. We also booked her flights from Syracuse to Orlando. (ouch $$$) She is coming for a visit next month so now we are putting together a little package to present to her then. She will finally know what's going on! ;)

I'm in too!

When I read "I am a researcher and perfectionist and also frugal" I thought immediately of myself, so hopefully I can pick up on some good tips. We're also traveling with a large group (14) the week before Christmas. Good luck with your planning!

Cool! :cool1: Thanks, and hopefully if you are like me, I can get some tips from you, too! ;)
I haven't done quite as much posting as I thought, but hopefully I'll get some daily plans posted soon.

My SIL had an idea to add to the surprise reveal gift for Grandma. Along with the tickets & confirmation numbers we can have letters from all 8 grandkids saying they can't wait to see her for Christmas. Then the logical conclusion should be that we'll all be in one place, right? I think this will be really cute. :goodvibes Anyone have any other ideas?

sorry the second was worse. Lord, I hope not for me. My poor sister has been so sick the entire pregnancy- going on 7 months now. really scares me to try again. :confused3

here's hoping the new patch your doc gave you works!

yes, just bring the kids and don't stress. it isn't like you are in a nice restaurant in NYC, you are at disneyworld. Even when i travel there on business or with just adults, we KNOW it is going to be filled with kids, even in the nice restaurants and many of those kids are worn out and cranky! :rotfl::wizard:

OK, so a quick update. My BIL & SIL talked with FIL and it doesn't seem like he is going to actually fly back to the states this year, so we are just continuing to avoid that. :goodvibes
MIL arrives here in MN on Friday. I have a Disney gift box that my SIL mailed me. She and her kids also came up with a cute poem for MIL and printed it in red & green on a Christmas stationery. I'll have to get the text and type it in here. Then we also have pictures the kids all colored and the flight confirmations and park hopper ticket. I'll put all that in the box and put a big ribbon on it. Our plan is still to set up a Skype between us and our ILs in TX on Saturday. We'll tell her they just want to say hello and make sure she arrived ok. Then I'll hand her the box for her to open so we can all watch her open it. :santa:

My son is on his first school trip today (just started Kindergarten!! :teacher:) to the zoo, so I have to leave work to pick him up, but I hope to get another post in soon to go over my updated schedule and a few questions I'm hoping to get answers to.

Day 1 (Dec 21- so we are on the Dining Plan!) is just travel and we don't arrive until after dinnertime, so if anything we will just have a counter service or snack and maybe swim as we unpack and decorate the room. I do have questions for this day, though.
1 - we are taking ME and our flights land at 7pm. Should we get our own luggage to avoid having them deliver it to the room after we are asleep or will it likely arrive within 2 hours? :confused3 I'm leaning towards getting it ourselves even though we'll have the two kids to wrangle as well. I just can't risk being woken at midnight and this way I'll have my decorations and stuff to put up right away.
2- how soon do I need to call or fax in room requests? I really want to be in a sports area we'll like and still avoid lots of noise since we'll be back for naps daily. I think I read once that you should wait until the week before so that they actually have your res out for the week and can actually update it? I don't want to bug them by calling now and again later on, but I know it'll be busy, so I want to get something in...

Here is my Day 2 plan (Wed Dec 22)
Get up 6:30/7
Get a snack/counter service for breakfast. Catch a bus to MK. Opens 9am.
Spend all morning in Fantasyland. :wizard:
Ride monorail around 10:45am to Polynesian for 'Ohanas at 11:15am. I'd also like to stop at the GF to check out the decor, but I'm not sure which way the trains go or how long that would take. I'll have to Google it unless someone knows of a good link for info? :goodvibes Then we just need to get back to the MK or other park to catch a bus back to Sports for nap time (1-3ish).
Hopefully around 4pm we catch a bus back to MK. Catch some shows and ride other favorites like POTC. Probably dinner at Columbia Harbor House. No idea how late we'll stay, but we know we'll be back, so we don't have to stay up for 9pm parade or 10pm fireworks.

I have a backup Chef Mickey's lunch for 4ppl and a Garden Grill dinner for 4 that I will probably not use. DH really liked GG, so I'm not ready to let that go yet, but I will go cancel Chef Mickey's once I post this in case anyone is looking.

Dear Mom/Grandma,

Christmas time is full of joy and glee
This year, Grandma, you'll be with your family.

It will be a sweet treat -but not candy-
We'll all be together-Grandkids, DILs, Kevin, Chris & Andy.

You'll be far away from the Carrier Dome,
Instead, you'll be in a vacation home.
We won't be in MN, TX, or at your house,
This year we'll be hanging out with Mickey Mouse!

We'll have a ball on rides big and small
Like "It's a small world after all"

If you're feeling tired, there's no need to whine,
We'll get you a wheelchair and go to the front of the line! ;)

We all know we'll have a wonderful time,
and there's a message from Santa:
Merry Christmas, Mom. This trip won't cost you a dime!!

Merry Christmas!:santa:

i swear i had answered this and then realized i was in the middle of posting it on a plane back from seattle to dallas when my computer died in flight. lol! anyhow- so here we go.....

;)

So we haven't used ME, but i did research it because we considered it last trip in December 2009. We just prefer to rent a car usually. I have heard folks that got in late say they asked the hotel to NOT deliver their luggage until the next morning, as not to wake the sleeping kids etc. However, i have heard the hotel often doesn't pay attention and still delivers it anyhow at like 10pm or whenever and might wake you guys up. So if you want to be absolutely sure there is no late night knocking at the door, then get it yourself.

on room requests, i think a week before is standard. the more generic you are, the better your chances. the more specific you get, they probably won't do it. like if you want first floor or close to food court, find, but don't ask for a specific room or something. We've had fairly good luck so far (with requests at POR- asking for AB near food court). Our last trip in Dec to WL- we had paid for pool view and hoped for views of the main pool, but didn't get it, even with our request. you just never know. i don't think they take them over the phone either, i think you have to fax, but you can always follow up your fax with a phone call to ensure they got it. i woldn't send in anything earlier than a week out- it simply won't get looked at.

also- if you find you are extremely unhappy with the room you are given, just call the front desk or head back up there and complain or ask for another room- it can't hurt, all they can say is no, right? ;)

on heading tot he Poly for lunch and trying to check out the GF decor..........you will want to board the RESORT monorail from the MK. There are two monorails as you know- one is the express, it goes direct from the MK to the TTC. The resort monorail goes to all the resorts and the flow is like this- MK to Contemporary, to TTC to Poly to GF back to MK. So you wouldn't stop at the GF until after your Poly stop. you could check it out after lunch on the way back to the MK though.

Thanks for the response! :goodvibes
I think we will just have to get our luggage ourselves before we get on the ME bus or I will just be too irritated to start off the vacation if anything went wrong.
I have actually researched which room numbers would be on the end of a particular building that I would request , but I can certainly leave that off my request. It would probably be pretty difficult for them to figure all that out as they try to assign the room anyway. I will definitely add a reminder to my outlook calendar for one week prior to our arrival date and have my fax all ready to go. :surfweb:
I hadn't had a chance to figure out the monorail trip yet, though, so thank you for that! I think it will work out perfect to visit the GF after our meal so we're not worried about making the ADR. I just hope the kids don't get too tired after the long morning because I'm going to want their pictures by the tree and gingerbread house of course! :santa:

One other note - we did the surprise on Saturday using Skype with the family in TX, and MIL was shocked! :flower3: She had a few tears, and Thank yous, and hugs, and then starting asking all the usual questions, so we finally got to talk about all the planning we have been doing. It's so great now we can talk about it much more freely (and post on FB). The only ones left who don't know are the kids in Texas. My SIL wants to surprise them on Christmas morning as they are packing up and leaving! :santa: I don't envy her trying to keep it a secret that long.

Day 3 (Dec 23):
Hopefully we weren't up too late the night before and can make rope drop or close to it at AK. We'll head to Safari and look at the shows schedule for FOTLK and Nemo to determine how to try to make both before we head back for naptime after lunch. Not much else high priority here as kids are too short for the big rides. Counter service lunch, then naptime, then head to Epcot. Possibly hit Nemo or see how SE/Soarin look for wait/FP times. Le Cellier dinner ADR at 6pm. Don't need to stay for Illuminations, should see it tomorrow, but guess I better double check the weather for tomorrow.

Day 4 (Dec 24): Up early for HS. Will head straight for TSM and then check schedules for Little Mermaid and PlayHouse Disney shows. Also need to check out the Star Wars Jedi training to see how they do it as I've heard conflicting reports about having to stand in line vs. having to sign up for a slot right away. Since we'll be back tomorrow, I'll just see how they run it and not worry about actually doing it. Counter service lunch, head back for nap, then be over to Epcot by 4 for dinner at Teppan Edo. Take dinner package slip over to American Pavilion and watch CP. Then Illuminations. Then I need to fill stockings and all that good stuff after we get back and put the kids to bed. :santa:

Your plans sound good! I loved that poem, it was so cute!

As far as ME goes, I think the service is better than it used to be. The luggage seems to get to your room within about 2 hours, but maybe that's just luck, who knows.

For our September trip, I faxed my request in I think 5 days in advance. I know the prevailing idea is to be as general as possible, and during the buiser season, that might be true. When I did it I was very specific, gave reasons for my requests (i.e. I wanted a ground floor because I had a stroller, etc) and in the end I gave them examples and I ended up with the exact room I wanted. We went at the end of September though, so maybe it was easier for them since it wasn't as busy? I am going to try the same tactic for our CBR reservation, just to see if it works.

Well, we paid off the last $1800 to disney, so no turning back! I think I will try to pack a suitcase or two with clothes and items that I would be ok without for the first day and tag those for ME. Then we can just have a couple to grab ourselves with items we want right away.
I found my husband's old tabletop (2ft tall) tree and discovered I could push up all the branches so I can fit it in a suitcase pretty easily. Now I can start figuring out what other decor I can bring. I'm also going to try to organize my folder of papers and start printing out all my confirmations and such.
I put a reminder on my calendar to fax out my room request one week before we leave.

Day 5 (:santa:Dec 25:santa:): Our park for this day is HS, which we were just at the day before. So no rush to get up super early, but if we do, all the better. We should be able to take our time going through our stockings and hopefully I have enough room to pack a few gifts or will have bought some things in the parks we can open. Depending on how long that takes, we can head to HS or maybe just head to DTD or whichever resorts have sweet decorations. After naptime, we need to head to HS for a 4:30pm dinner at Mama Melrose. Hopefully we can run over to see the first Fantasmic show of the evening (6:30) so we're not up too late. This is also the only evening we can check out Osbourne Lights. Then we need to get packed up to check out tomorrow.

Day 6 (Dec 26): This is our checkout day from Sports. :sad2: It's also our last chance to do EMH, so I want to leave our baggage at the front desk and head to MK for 8am. At noon at the latest DH will have leave to go get the rental van from Enterprise near DTD and head to MCO to pick up Grandma. Her flight lands at 1pm. I wonder what is the easiest way to get to DTD from MK?? Will Enterprise "pick me up"?? Anyway, after we have her in tow, we need to get the rest of us and all our luggage into the van to go check into the vacation home. Although, now that I think about it, that may be a lot of stuff. It might be tight, but by that time it will be way past DD's naptime and the park will be packed, so I think I'd prefer to just leave. We'll probably all try to meet up back at Sports and load everything there.
So, then we need to get groceries and check in to the vacation home. If it's close to 4pm, we'll check in first so we can unload before getting groceries. The family from TX should be driving in tonight. I'd also like to get some laundry started. No idea what we will do for dinner or if we will try to get back to a park. We'll probably relax and maybe try out the pool at the house.

I'm not sure if or when I'll be able to post much more planning info for the rest of the trip as we will have all 15 at some point starting the next day, but everyone else hasn't bought all their flights and done all their planning like I have. :goodvibes I will probably just write up what I have and it will be subject to change.

so glad you were able to share the surprise and plans finally, how exciting!!!

Your plans are looking great! just be aware of the crowds on the 25th and possible closures. I know usually the MK and Epcot are the ones to close due to capacity, not sure if HS usually reaches capacity or not, so just keep an eye on it to make sure you can get in!

also fantasmic that night could be crazy too- so get in line REALLY early. I imagine the lights will be mobbed too- my expeirence is that they are most crowded when they turn the on at dusk and least crowded the closest to closing time and after (they leave them on after 'official closing time'. I worked at HS on christmas day years ago and it was completely mobbed- i worked at H&V when it was a cafeteria and i was cashiering. i worked i think 14 hours that day. it was crazy and i never saw the end of the line, it went out through the door into the street all day long. so just be prepared for the crowds (heck, maybe you've been during christmas week before and know all this! lol).

here is some info i found on another thread about christmasd day and week possible closures due to crowds, usually MK is the most affected and not sure if HS or Ak have ever closed due to it.

if you are planning HS, you should be fine, it will just be crowded, but shouldn't close.

but just FYI- Stages of Park closing (from Cheshire Figment)
There are four phases of closing for each park. Note that when people exit through the turnstiles, it will lower the "in park" count at the Park's Operations Office.

Phase 1 - The toll booths are closed to everything except Disney buses and CMs on duty.

Phase 2 - All ticket sales stops. Unless you already have a ticket in hand you are not allowed in.

Phase 3 - Only Resort Guests and Annual Passholders are allowed in. If you are staying at a Disney Resort and do not have your tickets encoded on the room key you may be asked for ID. (If the tickets are encoded on your room key, or you have an AP the biometrics must match.)

Phase 4 - The parks are closed to everyone.

Note that if you show up at a park and you would normally not be allowed in due to a phased closing, and you have dining reservations in that park, it does NOT make any difference, they still will not let you in.

I'm getting so excited! It's only a month away now! :yay:
I picked HS for Christmas day because I read on easyWDW that MK and EPCOT would be full. I see that Touring Plans gives HS a 10 for that day, but still says it may be OK. Anyway, I got a little panicky thinking about trying to get into Fantasmic so I decided to refresh my memory about the dining package. For some reason I was thinking it was 2 credits, but it's only one!! So, I called WDW Dining just to see if they had any availability, but Mama Melrose is full for both lunch and dinner that day, of course. :sad2: So, I guess I will have to just stick with our regular ADR at MM and hope we can make it over to the show around 5:30. That gives us an hour in line. I should think we would get in even if we don't have the greatest seats.

I just googled dusk in Orlando in December and it's about 5:30pm. So, if that's when the Osborne lights come on, we will be in line and then watching Fantasmic! So, hopefully by 7, when we get out, the Lights won't be quite as packed. We'll just need to walk through and then we can head out.

Thanks for the Park closing info. Hopefully I won't run into any of that! I wonder if any of that info is available online or on my Droid. I have WDW Lines app from Touring Plans, so maybe I can keep an eye on it there. :surfweb:
