Most people go visit family on Christmas day. But we are live 6 hours away. After the gifts are opened, I would like to plan something fun for my family. A tradition that is unique to Christmas that we can do early/late afternoon. Any ideas???

What are your Christmas Day traditions?

we have a special breakfast. I made home made sticky buns and quiche.
We usually if the weather is nice take a stroll out side. We have had some very mild Christmas day's. Even when it is warm we have a nice fire in the fire place! Play Christmas Carol's.
We have family and friends that stop over through the day. No big sit down meal. We have buffet type food that can be eaten any time.
In the evening we watch a holiday movie.
We also always take a family picture!
Our day is just nice and quiet. Relaxed with not a lot of structure.

My family is going to the zoo! It is open year round and is a nice way to walk off some ofthose holiday treats. I have friends who gobowling or to the movies. I really just like to snooze on the couch and eat candy all day!

Well, now that I have kids, and no parents, we tend to just hang out at home. I always cook a standing rib roast for dinner. Watch a movie or something in the evening.

Last year it was all about playing with the new Wii that the younger son got for christmas.

And it is the last day that my kids will allow me to wear my Mickey Santa Hat until after Thanksgiving of the next year.

ETA: When I was younger and pre kids, me and my older brother would go hit a bar somewhere, it was the one day of the year that we would actually go out drinking together.

Before we moved down here, the Christmas traditions were mostly with my wife's family, and her family, and her family...

My wife has a huge extended family and every Christmas Eve had to be spend at her father's, Christmas morning at her sister's, and Christmas dinner (all afternoon and into the evening) at whichever sister "had Christmas." My family, which is much smaller, got the "see them sometime over the holidays" treatment. I got to where I dreaded Christmas and the "traditions."

Now it's just the two of us and if some family wants to come visit they are welcome. Her family doesn't because they are still hung up on their "tradition" of chaos and overcrowding. Sometimes my one daughter and granddaughter come down and I'm happy when that happens. The only tradition I insist on is that we have a nice, quiet turkey dinner. If nobody comes down for Christmas I do like to go to Epcot for the day.

I do think traditions are great, but sometimes they can get a little overbearing, if not very overbearing.

We always go to a movie. My family actually started this tradition when I was old enough to drive--I was the oldest and I had to take all the kids to a movie to get them out from underfoot while the adults were cooking. I like it so much that I continued the tradition with dd although I go along so there's no one at home that could have kids underfoot. ;)

Growing up, we usually went to whomevers home that had the youngest kids. So for a while it was our house, then my Uncle Mark's, and then my Uncle Mike's. Now I have the youngest, but my family has decided to do Christmas Eve instead, so every individual family can do their own thing on Christmas day. I love it. We have a fun morning with the boys looking at what Santa brought them. I make a special breakfast. Then I cook a turkey, a ham, and all the trimmings. We will probably have people dropping in during the day.

I am really looking forward to Christmas this year because my boys are getting older, 2 and 4, and are starting to get into Santa.

I want "going to Epcot for the day" to be my Christmas tradition!! :)

Seriously, I'm in my 50s and almost every Christmas, we have done somebody else's traditions (extended family). I really don't want to drive 6 hours to have a big fancy dinner and sit around with people I barely know. I would like to do things that are fun for DH and I.

We did spend a 3 day weekend at WDW at Christmas a few years ago, and it was wonderful!! Otherwise, when we're not driving 6 hours away to visit family :scared: , we go see a movie and have a really fun time.

My b-day is x-mas eve.

So we always do Chinesse food for dinner and my gifts afterwards.

Then we do midnight mass.

Mornings is always just my DH, me and our two kids. We don't do extended familiy till dinner.

We always take turns opening presents. There is no mad rush. Everyone will watch the other family member open their gift and we take time and appreciate the thoughts behind them.

I love the gingerbread house idea. DD and I had been doing ours "thanksgiving day afternoon" b/c we were always looking for something to do. But doing it christmas day is a great idea
