DH has changed our plans for christmas. We were going to a couples resort but now we are staying home (DH says he wants to spend that money here) and are looking for some ideas on what we can do. We are the ones that usually have the family over for christmas but not this year so our day is open. DH says he wants to make this day special as it will be the last christmas with just the two of us before the baby comes. We are both blank on what things we can do Chrsitmas Day I don't want to do a movie as everyone does that on Christmas. If we did see a movie it would be the princess and the frog and I have a feeling that will be a full theater. I'm not into packing into a theater Christmas Day. We live in NJ so if you know of any places that are open you think would be a good idea please let us know.

An idea I have had was having breakfast at IHOP but don't know what to do after that. Not sure the hours of our IHOP yet but know they will be open Christmas Day.

I don't know where you are in NJ, but the last couple of years we have gone into NYC Christmas day, just walked around, saw the windows, saw the tree and it was not that crowded.

Whatever you do, have fun and enjoy the day!

That sounds like a unique idea! :thumbsup2

I've got to agree about the aversion to a crowded theater. I've always made it a point not to see movies until they have been out a little while for that reason, but I let my husband talk me into going to see "The Blindside" right after it opened. There was not one vacant seat in the place, and while I did love the movie, I vowed NEVER to do that again! :rotfl2:

We go to the earliest showing of a movie on Christmas day and it's never been too crowded. This year, it's going to be Avatar.

My son and I are going to eat chinese and go to a movie. We have never done this on Christmas Day.

I would hate to work C-mas day ~ so I'd feel awful doing something that would cause others to have to work, even if I don't I know they'd still be open for others but I'd rather be at home or visiting with family, perhaps drive around in the evening to see lights. How 'bout a quiet day at home ~ games, a nice meal, a movie *at home??

DD10 and I are going out to lunch, then seeing Princess and the Frog (again) and the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie. :thumbsup2 We're usually at Disney for Christmas but took this year off to shore up the savings.

Good to know , we are thinking of going into NYC this year. I was wondering if it was crowded. I'm hoping the ice skating rink in central park is open.
I think that would be fun.

I don't live in NJ or NY area but up here there are several lights displays (Edaville Railroad and Lasalette Shrine and a couple of others). These are huge displays that take several hours to go thru and are always a breathtaking way to spend an evening at Christmas time. Do you have something like that near you?

I'd probably go to the movies since I've only been once since Cameron was born and it was a BIG deal lol Think of things that you can't do with the baby and do those things :)

I will be working Christmas Day, which also happens to be DD's 6th birthday. Last year, we spent Christmas in WDW so we are all very sad, but, I get to leave at 3:30, and my patients will have to stay, so I made a conscious decision to make the best of it. After that, we'll be going to my aunt's house for Christmas/birthday celebrations.

Somehow I thought you had a young child- like 6- must be confusing you with another poster?

Anyway, I did list some of the items that are available around here. Personally there are other options besides IHOP but that is your choice. Many hotels do nice breakfasts-- and BRIO in Cherry Hill (next to Cheesecake Factory) has a nice breakfast as well.

Me too!!! Dh works in a grocery store thankfully he has seniority and the only one in his department with little kids so he does get the day off. But I do feel bad for the rest its only open 9-5 and only one or two people from each dept work but thats pretty much their entire day standing around in an almost empty store. I try to plan my day so I don't support any businesses that day even gas stations granted some just may not believe and choose to work I do and also never know whose forced to work.

Marycaym, Is anything open in NYC on Christmas day? Like the stores, etc?

TIA

We stay home, we are the only extended family with kids so if you want to see us, you need to come to us (since Christmas is about the kids), so my MIL flies up from Florida and my parents and brother come up from CT and this year my BIL's are coming in from Michigan, so I will be doing everything for everyone for a couple of days, but I look forward to everyone being together at our house.

I think a lot of the Christmas workers actually look forward to the time and a half. Some of them might be struggling financially. Others might not have family nearby.

My DD landed her dream job this year. But that meant relocating nearly 1,000 miles away from home. Although her facility is open on Christmas, she is still technically in training mode. Since the trainers are off that day, she's off as well. Which is a shame, since she could use the money...and the companionship as well.

We stay at home in the morning and I bake quiche and monkey bread and then for dinner we go the the Grand Floridian to see the Gingerbread House and eat with Cinderella. We just started this 2 years ago to give me a break from all the holiday baking and cooking. It's really fun and we get to do the home thing and the Disney thing.

we're Jewish, so Christmas Day is basically just another day for us. We're considering heading in to NYC to skate at the Central Park rink (if it is open). Otherwise, we'll probably go to the movies. :)
